Re: In car breathalizer
Power, ground, starter signal or main relay/etc interrupt. Drill some holes to mount it on the dash so everyone knows they are a real booze hound.
|
Re: In car breathalizer
Is there anything to keep a person from tampering with it? Or is it like an ankle braclet, if tampered a signal is sent to who ever is concerned?
|
Re: In car breathalizer
just keep a sober buddy with you... all it does is interrupt the starter using a spdt relay
|
Re: In car breathalizer
5 wires if you count grounds, throw a little metallic sticker seal over the clips used to install shows if they were fucked with.
Pretty sure it's just a starter kill relay with a glorified volt meter. Maybe if the box sees battery voltage on the starter it gets pissy, but more than likely it doesn't care about that and watches for power to jump from battery 12 to alternator 14 without it being consulted first. If you get into this line of work, expect most of your clientel to be the medium to hardcore alcoholic type that are furious at the fact they have to pay you such a rediculous sum of money for 15 minutes of work once a month, while ignoring the fact you are simply doing a job and the gov't smacked them for ------- up not you. |
Re: In car breathalizer
and they don't send signals to anything if fucked with, they just datalog information about number of starts, times of starts, bac, fails, etc. Then you hook up to a pc once a month or every other month and download it all and report it to the dmv.

Nice! Sounds like cake, and any gov. work is $$

Re: In car breathalizer
Most also attach to the 4 ways and the horn. As you drive you need to update the test or the lights and horn go richter. So there might be a bit more to the install but its about online with a remote start. On the plus side, you don't have to do the cleanest install. Get paid good for it, they charge up the ass and its a requirement.

But you're right they're not always pie. If you do get someone as a client that isn't driving some older beater they can afford to trash regularly on weekend binges (95% of rides I saw waiting in line for service) the newer cars may require some trickery to keep anti-theft systems happy. |
Re: In car breathalizer
There a pain in the ass to get working i can tell you that. We've had to work on a couple cars with those in them and my boss tried for a half hour to get it started, then gave up and told me to get it going. 20mins of trial and error i had the bitch running. Pretty rediculious though.

Re: In car breathalizer
after its installed. install a wire to jump terminals 87a and 30 on the relay.....

Re: In car breathalizer
one guy around here was blowing up condoms and pinching them off when he was sober so when he was drunk he just grabbed one stuck it on the mouthpiece and let it deflate. i would also assume an air compressor or the air in a can would work.

If you have a SOBER buddy with you why not just let him drive? It wouldn't work to have him blow it in to get your car started because some systems test intermittently while you are driving. |
Re: In car breathalizer
some people will never learn
|
Re: In car breathalizer
you have to hum and ---- into these things until it beeps at you to stop
|
Re: In car breathalizer
I installed them when I worked at circuit city. Super easy, simpler than a remote start, just a starter kill relay. We didn't have anything to do with maintenance or up keep, but they paid great, way more than they should.

Because 45-year-old Paul Rupple had five prior drunken driving convictions, the device was installed that requires him to blow into it to start the van. If there's a hint of alcohol, the vehicle won't start. |
Re: In car breathalizer
you do have to hum, that's why you use a balloon, just pinch it a bit. one guy around here keeps a 25ft garden hose in his car, it transfers the hum, but it gets the reading before the alky gets all the way through.

Re: In car breathalizer
i had one in my car for a year. never tried messing with it or figureing how it worked but i did have to go in and get it reset every now and then because they get false signals if you have an exhaust leak or are smoking in the car.
