Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system**Updated**Again part 3**

So i have raped my system non stop for 5 years and it is time to upgrade. I would upgrade current system but the 754 pin socket was discontinued. I would like advice on what Processor (preferably amd) and
motherboard combo is decent, as well as what video cards are good for long amounts of abuse. Mainly lots of counterstrike source but would like something that would also be able to handle some of the new graphical demanding games.

My current setup
Asus k8v se deluxe motherboard
Amd Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0ghz
2gb ddr ram
Nvidia GeForce 7600gs 256mb memory
80gb hd
koolance water case

I was looking at buying another bottom of the line asus motherboards and tossing on one of the new Amd Athlon 64 x2 5000+.
.02Cents appreciated.
************************************************** ************************************************** **
So Christmas day i forked out 300 on new egg and updated my Dinosaur

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core
ASUS M3A78 2600mhz hyper transports
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) dual channel kit
Galaxy GeForce 9500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16

+Arctic silver Thermal compound so my ish will stay cool

All of this will be paired up with my existing water cooled case, hd/cd drives and existing psu. Should have pics up tomorrow.
************************************************** ************************************************** *****
Wow is all i can say in the performance increase in the dual core 3.2mhz processor compared to my original amd athlon 64 3400+ 2.0ghz is just ridiculous.
This new setup shits all over the previous one, nuff said.
Only complaints is that the 4gb of pc8500 ram is only recognized as 3.25gb because im on 32bit xp.

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

You would want AM2 Amd 5000+ or higher.
Upgrade to DDR2 ram 800+ speeds are reccomended
Get a sata2 mobo and sata2 hard drives
Get a high end 8800 series Nvidia.

All of the parts above are chea as hell now and are really fast when working together.
Never go for the brand new stuff because it's stupid exensive, buy high end hardware that came out like a year ago. They are cheap and are still crazy fast.

Newegg.com is where i buy all of my brand new parts when building a computer for someone. Very good site and they ship fast.

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

screw amd. they suck.

get something dual core. for a video card a 9600 gt should suffice, i got mine for 70 bucks on black friday.

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

Quad core Intel OC'ed to run 3ghz per core on air cooling is very doable
Then add an MSI brand Radeon HD4850, 700watt psu with good 12v rails, mobo, ram, etc. Doable with $800 starting from scratch. Add a water block and skip the air cooling on the quad core and you're golden.

enikolayev 12-11-2008 03:19 AM

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

quad core isn't necessary for gaming. he wont notice a performance difference. unless he's encoding video all the time.

All Amd chips after 4000+ and FX57s are all at least dual core.
So a 5000+ would be a dual core.

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

GTA 4 takes advantage of multicore. Soon all games will. Multicore is the future. 3.3ghz dual core < 3ghz quad. You know what to do.

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

HD4850 and HD4870 are cheap ($170ish depending) and stomps everything else out there. Nvidia drivers suck for Vista and 64bit XP.

enikolayev 12-11-2008 03:36 AM

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

i guess it depends on the budget. but the 9600 gt is more bang for the buck.

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

btw vista sucks and 64 bit xp doesn't support many games

intel processor dual or quad of your choice 4 gigs+ of memory a ati 4850 or better and a decent mobo and powersupply and your good to go. Give what you want to spend on the new computer and ill be more specific.

He complained because Nvidia (probably the card he had) can't make drivers for 64bit. They just don't know how to do it.

Yeah if the board has pci-e he might be able to just up the psu (if it's too small) and add a bunch of ram (if the board supports it).

Core2 dual or quad. AMD is out of the competition until they leapfrog Intel with their next generation offering - which is what they've been doing for the last decade if anyone's paid attention.

I argue that the slightly higher clock speed per dollar and larger L2 cache (per dollar) of the dual core processors is what you want. All the multi-processor targeted games that will come out 2+ years from now will be built for the top end gaming rigs out then, and you won't be it with old gear.

Never been a fan of AMD. I have seen a few pop pretty easy, and the Intel P4's and up are like tanks in that respect.

I've always felt that its like a ford and chevy debate, really depends on what you like

The p4 was one of the worst chips ever amd ---- all over the p4's. As of now i wouldn't touch a amd processor just like I wouldnt touch a nvidia card pure garbage right now. But like joey said give it awhile that will change it always does

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

Jesus I didnt say it was the best, its jsut a common as hell chip and they are pretty reliable and dont blow up easy. hard to break like a D16 and yet still not Winning any races with 90whp.

Most PC's I work on dont have the lastest and greatest so for someone like me I see P4's all day. The occasionaly P3 or Duo core but for the average dude a 3-4 year old pc with p4 is as common as dirt.

So i still stand by the comment, P4's are stout and OC decently, and I've seen AMD's stock Smoke because the thermal paste wasnt enough. granted teh guy was an assclown, how do you ---- up thermal paste but still it shouldnt cook the damn thing.

lol @ p4 worst chip evar. ::)

If you want budget AMD is the way to go. Both my server and my home theater PC are AMD systems and work great. One runs Vista and the other runs server 2008 (basically Vista) and I have had no major problems.

Right, you don't have problems with AMDs... but Intels are faster. The top Futuremark scores are Intel systems. AMD's have gimped L2 caches.

HMTguy 12-12-2008 07:59 PM

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

AMD is a better value though.

Re: Calling Pc Nerds...Need advice on new system

To be honest I don't know much about either but I gave my buddy who knows quite a bit $600 a few months ago, told him to build me the best bang for the buck system that will last a while (the usual ----) and be upgradable and he chose a
amd athlon 64 x2 dual core proccesor 5000+ 2.6GHz. Now again I have no idea what all this ---- means, but when I was buying everything on newegg, it was the best selling processor at the time for what it's worth :S

That 4850x2 from what I've seen is faster than the 4870x2. Both can be xfired btw so that's 4 gpu's.

I'm too lazy to make my own thread sooooo I'm going to hijack this one.

The gf's hugely neurotic and can't cope with fan noise. Any recommendations on quiet PS, case fans?

Scythe.

The loudest thing on my PC is the optical drive. Harddrives and fans are nearly silent. The only thing I hear is air moving...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=&srchInDesc=

SFlex 120mm fans are what I use. Silent except for air moving, but kinda pricey at $15

So new system pulled 227fps constant in the Countstrike Source video stress test. Not bad for a 36 dollar video card :P
