Cable Or DSL?

Ok. I realized that dial up is just not cutting it anymore. So I was looking in to high speed internet and came across an option of choosing Cable or DSL. I was leaning towards cable because it seem cheaper and faster from what I've read from earthlink. However, when I ask my friend they say go "DSL" its cheaper and you wont experience lag. So Im wondering which all do you guys have and which one should I get?

with DSL u will most probally get a upload/download limit of 1gb which isnt much if u use the net alot.

DSL might not be as fast as Cable, but its true that u never get any lag or ---- like that cuz its usuallly a dedicated Line.

Cable has no limit, u get faster download speeds. But this is a shared connection and u might suffer some lag during peak hours whenever everyone is using the cable (such as the same building or area.)

So basically its ur choice, Oh and im not sure about DSL but some Cable operators dont allow P2P sharing programs to work.

im sorry for my dumbness but what does that mean? So you do experiance lag with cable. Is that for only the people that in your are like housing? Do you think earthlink cable seems pretty good or hear any good reviews on them?

p2p is sharing ---- with other users, progs like LimeWire and Kazaa.

I have cable (50Kb up, 450Kb down), don't really notice any lag at peak hours.

Just make sure you don't have some sort of download limit, otherwise if you start downloading movies, you're in trouble soon.

How much is cable over there? I pay 38 Euro = 50 bucks a month.

p2p=peer to peer like kazaa. i'd go with dsl, i have dsl and it's fast. like he says cable isn't a dedicated line like dsl and when too many people are using it, be it for the tv or the computer it has lag. even if you live in a house where the houses are weparated, unlike a townhouse.
other houses stil share the same cable wire.

So you opinion is going more towards DSL? I did the math and realized that it would actually cost more for me to go that route. I would have to buy a phone line and pay for dsl. Not money company offer dsl so i would have to go with earthlink because sbc yahoo dsl only works if you have sbc which is pricey. :-\

Re:Cable Or DSL?

DSL can outperform cable but that comes at a price. You pay for speed. The advantage is most DSL providers give a min of 256k upload some only 128k. Most cable is capped at 128k up but has a faster download speed usualy in the 3mb (3000k) speed range. Your basic 30-50 dollar dsl service will be a max download of 512k. The faster download speed the higher the costs. DSL is dedicated so no you should not get any "lag" or slowdowns during high traffic times. Cable is shared with those in your area meaning your entire neighborhood. This area could be block or a few miles in circumfrence. It depends on your population and the server networking. Also do you plan on playing any online internet games? If you answered yes then choose cable. With online games, especialy twitch type like first person shooters, you want the lowest ping possible. Cable will always ping lower than DSL. I don't feel like explaining ping so just trust me on this. Another way to change your feelings is do you have cable TV? Some people are on Direct TV and sattelite so of course DSL would be their choice. You have to atleast pay for basic cable service to have cable internet.

Price vs Speed = Cable > DSL
Reliability at peek hours = DSL > Cable
Overall speed at a higher cost = DSL > Cable
Online gaming = Cable > DSL

WIth Cable u might not be able to use Ares.

But im pretty sure u DSL allows it cuz u have a limit per month and a direct line so it doesnt affect other people while u download, vice versa cable.

geeze you guys reply fast. Yes i plan on doing online gaming with my xbox. Thats why im leaning towards that type of service because my friend recommends no lag. Plus it would seem cheaper for me all i would have to do is pay for the cable not the phone line and service. But the thing that bothers me is I wont be able to download music and movies from ares if i go cable. :-\

had both...cable sucked wrinkly goat balls, gave it back in a week. I've had DSL eversince, no probs. when I had cable it was ONLY fast during the afternoons, when no one was home....come 7-8:00pm....it was worse than 56k :-\ but that was when Comcast first came out with cable internet, so maybe its different now...but I'm more than happy with my DSL

so i quess more of you are leaning towards cable. Alright i'll just stick with that and just ask them about the download limit. I dont think i have to worry about that though

Re:Cable Or DSL?

where we live, ADSL is the same price as cable, and since the phone company does ADSL, its cheaper to bundle it up. ADSL also doesn't loose or drop the connection as much as cable. And since ADSL works on a bed designed network, when your neibours get on it, it doesn't slow down like cable does. Before we got the T1, ADSL was teh ----.

Sounds like you don't have a landline, get cable. Even if you had one I'd still say get cable. DSL is no reason just to have a phone line.

plus when you get people using it, when the bandwidth is soo high, you hardly notice it. i still get 300 kbps download at peak houres. at night that runs up to 500 kbps on some servers. hella kick ass.

also if you wanna pay less, buy the modem. some companies will let you buy the modem. i think they will take 10 bucks off? mine does.

dial up sucks. I can't stand it. I can't wait to get high speed.

I read the disclaimer as far as downloading there is no limit really listed. But i read this though

Pinging is expressly prohibited. Accordingly, EarthLink maintains the right to terminate any member's connection following any extended period of inactivity as determined by EarthLink.

what is pinging? I heard that before but not really sure what that is.

pinging is kinda like can you hear me now? Good. kinda like that guy with the cell phone commercial. the computer just asks yo, you there to another computer, and if it responds with a yo, whats up bro, , you get a ping, the ping also comes back with a time, the timne it took for you friend or other compyuter to reply. thats all the a ping does. but if you do thids too much, your friend can get pissed. thats why earthilink sux. because when you play agame or use filesharing, it pings the hell out of other ocmputers and earthlink dont like that too well.

sooo...I can't play online games and I can't share files?

Re:Cable Or DSL?

it all depends on the company, the cable company here didnt mind me leeching 50 gigs a month from p2p and the dsl company i have now doesnt mind either

HMTguy 12-29-2004 12:12 PM

Re:Cable Or DSL?

I do all the time, on my old dsl setup and now on cable. Even if I'm downloading files at 100 kb/sec I still have no lag with online games. Personally I dont think one is "better" it just depends on what your local service offers. I'd go with whichever one is faster. Or maybe a best speed per dollar ratio.

Re:Cable Or DSL?

listen just get a 5.1mbps cable connection and ull be laughing just like i am right now...as we speak
its faster than a t1

games are fast as long as u got a good vidcard
i get like a 20-30 ping in alot of shooter games and im also further away from the server than most players (canada)

and i dunno if this was a fuckup or not but i once downloaded at 13mb/s on shareaza, amazed the ---- outta me
2 bad this was only one time

Re:Cable Or DSL?

Your location makes a huge difference. DSL gets shitty the farther away it gets. If youre like me, about 2 blocks away from the phone company central office, then itll be ok, but when you get like 3-4 miles out (near the limit it can be used) it starts getting shitty. Around here if you have a phone line already and youre close, dsl can be much cheaper (its like $29) the cable is anywhere from $39-$60. Ive never had the dsl go down. If you must have the absolute most speed, the cable is hands down faster but the dsl feels more snappy (i really like the snappy) and its cheaper, but it all depends.

is it possible to get sbc or cox cable? if so i would get sbc 's dsl... cuz if you have an extra computer you can host it 24/7 and host anything u want. it may be a little more spendy. at first. if you can get cox ( i have) it is kinda cheap 40$ a month.. but we own our modem. which is something else you should do. is ask for what kind it is. and go to Fry's( if u have one nere you) and they can help you out on getting the right one. ours coast like 70$.

I was going to go that route..but that expesnive. I have to have sbc to get it and i dont have a phone line. So it would cost alot. I rather just pay the 40 bucks from earthlink. As far as the pinging...Its just said they dont allow it. Nothing else about it. They said they would termintate my activation if its inactive for a period of time which is normal.. this is the rundown of the usage...

Re:Cable Or DSL?

Looking at your situation:

You have no phone line.

So the only route is to get cable. Unless, you cut off your cell phone then get a phone line and DSL(then that would be cheaper).

As far as pinging, I think they are only worried about you (or someone) who might use the connection to send DOS attacks to other computers (this was big on the news a few months back).

Sounds like earthlink allows gaming, download/upload, etc.. If you dont see any notice about MAX upload/download limit, then there isnt any.

So yeah.. CABLE 'nuff said.

i'd never go with dsl again. i hate dialing to the connection with the user name blah whatever. slow as ---- for uploading. 128 was my max. download was around 200 if that... with cable i get like 400 up and 600-1200 down. cable is the ------ ----. and i'd never change it again.
