build evo IV or buy evo IX

before you guys start critisizing about how shity the mirage is just listen or rather read.

i just started a new job and am thinking about either turning the mirage into an evo IV or buying a evo IX when the X comes out in sept.

the evo 9 already comes pretty quick from factory. pretty easy to upgrade it and there are a lot of parts for it, but just about everyone has one, still good-looking though and it's a dead giveaway and cop magnet.

there are not many mirages that have the 4g63t and it would just be a bad-ass sleeper but the costs would prob add up to about 10 grand or 15 , buying a front clip or source the parts. and maybe the poss of turning it AWD

also the evo is like 3500 lbs vs the mirage 2280lbs and maybe with the awd maybe it'd be 2500 lbs. better power to weight ratio.

i know that if someone had the choice, poeple would always avoid the hassle and work and leave the factory to do it and you just buy it. but in the end woudn't it be cheaper to just build the evo IV and be proud to have something that never came to the US and that not a lot of people have

opinions?

Re: build evo4 or buy evo 9

Get the mirage, but leave the mirage badges on. Don't be a homo and put evo badges on it. This will have two effects: 1) it will be sleeper and 2) you won't be as much of a fag. For the amount of money a new evo costs, you could make a mirage very... how shall I say... pimp, if you do it right. First I would invest in the newest evo drivetrain I could get, then get a set of 7.5" or 8" wide wheels and put some fat meat on them, weld in extensions on the fenders for widebody, body work, etc.

So you can afford a Evo9 but you looking to take a shitty ass mirage and try to turn it into a evo. I say waste your money and let us know how it turns out.

Not only was this done like years ago www.lilevo.com

But you need to buy the evo9 cause if you try this for your self you will fail and ruin 2 cars.

Re: build evo4 or buy evo 9

One of my friend's has the evo9 MR edition. It's not a bad car, semi-quick even though my turbo'd hatch can eat it at a roll. But for the price tag you can go buy something of pimp status and still be quick. She paid almost 50k for her evo (was somewhere a little over 49 with taxes and crap) which is a helluva lot of money for a sub 300hp heavy ass car. She could've gotten a decent BMW with the money she dumped. Not to mention the fact that the car has been broken into twice now, someone backed an suv into and caused almost 3200 bux worth of damage, and the turbo has shaft play and boost issues with only 28,000 on the clock and the clutch already took a ----. Mitsu said they wouldn't warranty the clutch, and she's still fighting with them about the turbo issue, not to mention her warranty is completely void once she tries to put on ANY aftermarket performance part.
Stick to the old-school...evo4 style ftw.

Super Street's homo-rific magazine featured an Aussie who mated the EVO drivetrain on a newer Mirage hatchback, thing had to be pretty wicked.

Re: build evo4 or buy evo 9

though the LILEVO was based off the mirage 1 or 2 gens before mine. the body of the 98 mirage except for the bumpers looks similar to evos IV-VI. I thought about what people had done with the hatchback mirage but i can't be done with this one. I would need a evo engine from the IV to the IX because the timing belt is one left side of the engine and before it used to be on the right, even though they were 4g63's also but they were flipped and the trans is on the opposite side too it's on the right and before it used to be on the left. so eclipse's 4g63 would not work. including the 4g61

no i won't put the evo decals, i'll just take all the badges off except the mitsu badge. found a vr-x tans. but man they are pricey. if i blow the mirage it's alright, i still got the prelude

i'll keep posting how the build goes

Re: build evo4 or buy evo 9

already went through a clutch? damn!, thanks. i thought mitsu had backed off voiding warranties since sema helped put a bill for car makers not to void warranties if someone put aftermarket stuff.

thanks, evo 4 it is

Umm, all evo9's are awd. At least every one that I've seen, even the 8 models. Not to mention the base model evo9 has less hp than the MR edition. :P

sell all your cars and buy one that is worth a damn.

50k for an evo you have to be on some serious hardcore crack

Re: build evo4 or buy evo 9

we were looking at a subie. Just seemed like a deal that was too good to be true. This one, the price was marked way down, needed a clutch...then when I was talking to him, he said he would fix the clutch for free. Where his logic is, I dont have any idea. :1

Buy a used evo 8 or evo 9.I currently dont own a dsm(ive owned 11 of them) but still work on them. The only real difference besides a price tag between a evo 8 and 9 is prettly much the head.We in the dsm community call a evo 9 a evo with cams.Doing a swap has its headaches and the newer evo drivetrains are so far holding up well.

Re: build evo4 or buy evo 9

but aren't used evos pretty beat up? i see people all the time kicking the ass out of their new evos and not even breaking them in right.

in regards to power its gotta be the same engine in the IX base and the MR, same compression , same everything, just that the MR has the 6 speed tans, and other non powertrain things

also how diff can the head be from the VIII and the IX i read about it and the mivec in the IX only alters spark not valve timing, (I know what mive stands for, but this version of mivec does not involve valve timing) according to car & driver and autoweek. i don't know about the cams if they're any different.

my cousing bought a used evo and at first everying was fine, now it stalls after reving it hard or putting in in neutral after several shifts, and no. it does happen i tried it and it did stall, i have been driving manuals forever so error was not a factor. you have to rev the engine while the rev are coming down or the engine dies. and my cousing really babies the car so the car does not see much abuse from him.

well ................. we'll see because i really like the power upgrade from the IX and also the front, but i really don't like mistubishi's stance on aftermarket products. so if i were to buy one i would want it new, also not a lot of people get the sun, sound and leather package. and i want mines with a sunroof and HID's. i don't really care about the leather. and i don't like the way aftermarket hid's look they're too blue or too purple.

so anyway i still got time. evo X comes out in sept, which is when i plan to buy the IX if i give up on the 'mrage

Well, the US kept the hood scoop on them like they were in Japan, but gave us the shitty 2.5 NA motor; Japanese RS's have an EJ20t in them, using the topmount with the hoodscoop.
;)

Re: build evo4 or buy evo 9

i wonder if the old 2liter or the new 2.5 fits in the 90's subaru's. well yeah in japan and other places you always get the good ----. here in the us we get the watered down stuff that looks the part but can't back it up, most of the time at least. look at the STI in japan there is a legacy sti, sti wagon, in england you have the evo ranging from 289hp to 400hp stock from factory, i love hondas for high reving and i love mitsus for turbo engines and awd, but the thing subaru's got is that hot flat 4. man i love that burbly sound even in idle, even better at WOT :S
