i run agx's and tein s-tech springs on my crx and i love it.it rides nice as ---- and i have the ability to adjust the stiffness depending on what im doing.. i think i might have $500 in it considering i bought it all from e-gay

I don't know if they make a bilstein shock for your car. But I have found they are the best bang for the buck!

Re: budget suspension setups

its a 96 civic sedan

i liked my teins alot but id like a little lower. are those agx's adjustable in ride height? ive heard you can lower your car a little with some struts and it still rides good, like lower then the drop spring is said to go, but i dont know much about this stuff.

id like to spend under $400, but i havent researched much yet.. id like my car low but not as low as it is now where all my fender linings are shredded and i can rest my motor on small 2" speed bumps

agx-kybs shocks and omnipower coilovers. Not too cheap but cheaper than most and ride well.

Re: budget suspension setups

Really it costs 500 for a good spring/strut combo.I would look for some used coilovers and get a urethane bushing kit.

Re: budget suspension setups

Ive got KYB GR2s and eGay coil overs. IT work pretty good and was the total cheapness.

Unfortunatly for my car thats about as good as it gets. 1988 Toyota Tercel = no aftermarket

I am looking at hte posibility of making some shortened struts and using short KONI race inserts.

Bilsteins with some H&R or maybe some eibach springs is what I'm gonna be doing.

Re: budget suspension setups

I have H&R sport springs and Tokico Illumina struts, I love the adjustability, but I always leave the struts on the hardest setting.

Re: budget suspension setups

i've been lookin into those eibach pro-dampers, cause they're like $280-$350 a set. so far i've only read reviews on tire racks web site, people there like them enough, so i'll probably go with them this summer/spring.

I run KYB-AGXs I got from Ebay for $250, and a set of Progress suspension -1.5 springs for like $125 on sale from sport compact only. I love that setup.

Progress makes really nice springs, they don't slam you car or make the ride TOO stiff, just give it a nice moderate drop and increase in handling. They also offer special spring sets for engine swapped cars, like civics with an H22, so the car doesn't sag in the front from added weight.

I will have some 96-00 K-Sport full coilovers for sale soon. Car is totaled in my driveway. Just need to get a quote on the damage and then I'm gonna start stripping it. Also have Front camber kit for 96-00

i bought bilsteins on ebay and h&r's off ebay, total was 400 bucks, after 4 years, i have had no fade, they still rock balls

Oscar 02-17-2007 12:07 AM

Re: budget suspension setups

the only ride height adjustable shocks/struts are the koni yellows.

Dont go too low, its retarded and pointless.

I bought my s-techs and agx's on ebay for 350 about a year and a half ago. The drop is awesome, but I hate that the s-techs are way too ------- soft. They're great for daily driving, but suck balls at the track or any racing event.

Re: budget suspension setups

Right now I run the Tokico Illumina's and Skunk2 sleeve coil-overs. I'm honestly not too impressed with them...the front's are 400lb and the rear's are 300lb, but they're way to stiff for what I use them for. Very hard ride on the street, and it doesn't "load" enough at the track (soloII type, not 1/4 mile). The struts themselves are awesome with adjustability and such and perform very well, just not the springs. I need something with a little more give to induce a little bit of body roll in a tight corner...unlike the skunk2's that lay flat and produce a slide :P My advice...stay away from the "junk2's" :X

Re: budget suspension setups

I've just fitted standard ITR suspension, including front and rear anti-roll bars. The car sits pretty high, but the ride is good for the street and a decent improvement over stock EG stuff. I'd recommend it.

Pretty cheap as well, i paid $160 for low mileage used struts, the lot only came to $350

Re: budget suspension setups

tein s-techs, tokico blues and poly bushings all around. little noisey due to the bushings but a pretty nice setup overall

ill sell my Spoon struts and H&R race springs for $500 :)

Still working awsome.

AGX and tein FOR THE WIN
im going with that combo because my buddy's 90 ef ------- hugs corners.
and i road in a 95 civic with koni's and there wasn't a big diffrence.

Skunk2 drag launch coilovers (sleeves) $130
Tokico Illumina struts $0 (traded stock suspension for struts) :6

I haven't drove on them yet, but that's teh cheapnezz. :)

good shock absorbers & traction bars FTW

BirdmanMD 02-17-2007 08:59 PM

Re: budget suspension setups

excuse my noobishness, but how do traction bars affect road course/autox handling? i know what they do for straight line acceleration, but do they adversely affect the handling in different conditions?

SkunT 02-17-2007 09:03 PM

Re: budget suspension setups

IMO, the only way to ---- up suspension on a Honda is to run to high of a spring rate for too slow of a car. So with that, traction bars...use em if you got em.

Dont forget...the #1 overlooked item reguarding suspension/braking, tires. You can have the most top notch ---- and have shitty tires and put it all to waste.

the biggest difference i noticed was the poly bushings in the LCA's. old nasty 16 year old rubber doesnt hold ---- in place like it should

Oscar 02-17-2007 10:05 PM

Re: budget suspension setups

balljoints and bushings as well as anti sway bars make huge differences in handling. Even if you're on stock shocks/springs, brand new bushings will make your car ride ------- awesome.

and the only way bushing squeak is if you dont grease them enough. You gota grease the ---- out of them.

and agx's are trash.

Racintweek 02-17-2007 10:17 PM

Re: budget suspension setups

its the upper control arm bushings that make all the noise, a shot of white lithium every couple weeks does the trick though.

even w/ just a stock Si rear sway and the poly bushings, i can make the ass end of my hatch step out pretty easy

WTF 02-17-2007 11:43 PM

Re: budget suspension setups

whats a good cheap strut. im not building a race car. i just want my car it handle better then stock and ride nice

Racintweek 02-17-2007 11:46 PM

Re: budget suspension setups

most non-adjustable aftermarket gas struts are only marginally better than stock gas struts. if you are going non adjustable make sure it can handle shorter springs.

tokico blues work fine for me

I've never been able to get the ass of my hatch to let loose...it's always the front that goes first. Maybe the DA integra rear bar with the poly bushings helps...who knows. The DA front bar swaps right in to 88-91 chassis as well, correct?

Re: budget suspension setups

You looking to hook off the line, not corner? None of these guys has a clue.

Make some suspension limiters out of old shock rod, weld them so they pass alongside the LCAs with threads pointing down up front, and pointed up and alongside the UCA in the back. Construct/weld boxes off the xCAs so that the shock rods pass through them, then spin a hard poly bush similar to the forward radius rod units, backed by a washer and then a lock nut, up them until you get the max travel you want up front and the max compression you want in the rear.

Five dollars, big fish, and no FWD streetcar will be able to hook as well as you.

Can you draw a pretty mspaint of that, real quick and dirty like, so I can get a better idea?

Re: budget suspension setups

ya thats sounds cool and fun, but i pretty much cant fabricate anything, i own a angle grinder, a BFH, and basic tools. and a sick ass electric impact gun i scored for $7.

i really want a e36/46 bmw but there out of my range, unless i were to give up my bike, but not happening, so id jsut like my car to handle and hold the road and corner good like one, and a 2" drop is nice. i never go to the track though.
