BMW's suck ass! ***pics***
my wife called me outside because the neighbour's garage had smoke billowing out of it. thank god his garage door was open. i grabbed my fire extinguisher out of my house and ran into his garage and tried to put out the flames coming out of the front grill... no luck, someone was able to get the guy to come out the front door because he was in the basement sleeping... he gave me the keys and i put it in N and pulled the damn thing out so his whole house wouldn't burn down. the guys from the fire dept weren't too concerned as they seemed to take their sweet time putting it out. damn, that smoke was something awful- i can still taste it in my mouth :P. what the hell kinda car spontaneously catches fire? i'll never buy one based on this alone. he was lucky his garage door was open!

Holy ----, I wonder what happened? That's a good way to total a BMW. :l I like how the fire department decided to use a big pry bar instead of the hood latch to open the hood. :y

Lol. Yeah that is wierd. My guess is its gonna be electrical related. Ive seen quite a few volkswagens burn sorta like this one (usually worse).

The CRV fire problem was notorious.... Second: the salvage value on that burned out Bimmer is likely more than the total value of several of the little CRXes buzzing around the board.... |

Nice save man. My bro is a fire fighter in Bloomington (a suburb of Minneapolis) and he says he's put out two of those x5's in the past year or so.

Yeah i agree that can happen with any car my cousin owns a honda civic (like everyone else in the world) and one day he was driving down the highway and one of the fuel lines broke squirting fuel on the hot engine. It caused a big fire.

Yeh happened to me also , the metal bracket that holds the battery somehow connected with some wires ..
Scary thing is tho how fast that fire goes out of control :o |

Damn that sucks. Not really sure if this changes my opinion about BMW's, heard about this stuff happening to all types of cars. Regardless, good thing you got to it in time, and a big thumbs up to you for taking action... my neighbors would have probably just watched our house go down in flames.

i can promise you BMW knows of the defect that causes this (whatever it is) but the sales vs incidents is so low they wont do a recall. I say buy one they sue them for knowingly putting your life in danger.
Its probably something stupid too like a over rated fuse of poor electrical connection. aaron, good job on the save! I remember that x5 @ the meet, that thing sounded bad ass |

happened to my friend's 3 series. same problem, shorted and caught fire. she bought another one, and it happened again.

at the last minute he would of ran out of his over insured house to see his over insured car on fire. that would of sucked have the insurance company pay for your house belonings car and ---- = new house,stuff,car, and a lot of money all the stuff he wanted to save was at his moma's house |

my buddies dad has an X5. it has gone through 2 engines, had one rebuilt twice. it has every light on the dash on (abs, air bag, etc..), the tranny grinds and it must be double clutched when downshifting. along with that is spontaneously leaks oil and blows a few valve cover gaskets.
its a tough ole bird though - he is trading it in, some dealership is willing to give him 8k for it. he is just hoping that while the car that he is buying is on order that the X5 still works when he takes it in. |
