Yeah, I've read some things stating that a few feet from a normal sized tv (42-50") you won't see a difference between 720p and 1080p, so our 50s and 42 are all 1366x768. With the ps3 hooked to it playing bluray, I can't see any edges of pixels, so don't quite see the need for 1080p yet. Projector will be 1280x1024 when completed, so I'll at least get 720p widescreen and have full 4 if I want. This is where 1080p would be nice...but currently, 1080p LCD panels that are a decent size to throw in a projector, are both expensive and have a slow response. Most of the affordable LCD/Controllers ($700+) have a 25ms response. That is ---- for gaming unless you like 120" of blur. I'll live with the 4ms panel I got for $70 in the projector until 1080p gets faster and cheaper. My computer monitors are 1680x1050 20", which still isn't 1080p, but again to see pixel edges I have to get closer than I ever would be. I just got a 500gb external harddrive and keep my media on there. If I want to watch HD on the 360/PS3/projector/computer I just plug it to whatever I want.

Is your TV hd? If not, you can just use s-video and won't notice a decrease in quality (since there isn't much to lose :P). Keep your interlaced ----.

Trust me, when I run a 720p game (NFS Carbon) compared to a 1080p game (Ridge Racer) the picture quality and speed is pretty big. You can just BARELY see the frames skip when you go really fast in NFS where as in RR, its just crystal clear retarded detail all the time. It doesnt sound like much, but if you compare side by side, its noticeable. My parents have a 57" sony projection 720p tv (not DLP) and you look at that compared to the 1080p signal in RR on my LCD, its definately much diffrent even at distance. But then again, like I said, Im a A/V ----- lol.

Good place to get info on projectors and all kinds of A/V stuff is avsforum.com If I were you, Id do a projector with a constant 2.35:1 ratio so you get the full use out of the theatre-like picture on blu-rays/hd-dvds and even some of the newer regular dvds are 16x9 2.35 format, but then you pretty much have to have a dedicated theatre room, unless you want your living room dark most of the time (downfall to projectors).

Using a 450w HID metal halide 6500k bulb, so brightness isn't a problem (living room stays dark anyway) and it's got one of the best spectrum outputs of any bulb

You can't compare two different games and two different types of tvs That's like saying "i play unreal tournament 3 on my pc at 720p and it's choppier than quake 4 at 1080p." Games are completely different code, and while one game can look great and run smooth, another can look like *** and run like crap. Also, the PS3 has a shitacular scaler. Look at how well it scales ps1/2 games They've already had at least 2 updates to try and fix it's scaler flaws and it still isn't great. We have a 42" LCD and some 50" plasmas, every model of every type of tv has it's flaws. I personally will never buy a DLP just because I hate rear projection, IMO it's not as clear as an LCD or plasma, although I've seen some newer 60" 1080p projection tvs at work and they are crystal clear. LCDs are great for brightness and pretty reliable, lightweight, and no burn-in, but on big panels, you can see the "LCD effect" where one corner will look reddish while another will look greenish, most easily noticed on black screen. I get annoyed by these things. Plasmas have pretty good contrast, better response, and overall I just like the picture better, but I'm curious to see the new 1,000,000:1 contrast LCDs or SED.

As far as the aspect ratio, it really doesn't matter. It's 1280x1024 which is 4, but when I play a 16:9 widescreen image it'll be 1280x720 letterboxed, which is exactly what I need for 720p. If I feel like playing an old school emulator or watching regular cable ( ) it won't be stretched out. I'll still have my full 720p though. Like I said, when I can find a 15.4" wuxga panel with decent response/contrast specs, then I'll buy one. Until then, 720p will be good enough. A 50" 720p plasma in every room and a 120" 720p in the living room will suit me just fine :P Not to mention, MOST content is 720p and if you're lucky, 1080i. It's hard enough to find HD stuff to watch. Even worse, a lot of it is poorly upscaled 480i/p stuff. YUCK. Sure the ps3 and 360 play 1080p, but I don't play games too much so the purchase really isn't justified.

I'm an AV ----- too.

yes my tv is a 720p, will i be able to run games/movies in widescreen with it?? thanks for the input on the blu-ray too, i my parents were wondering whether to purchase it but it sounds like its not going to be much different with the 720.

psycho_vince thanks for the link and advice, sounds like you got yourself a pretty wicked set-up.

Um, well whether you can run widescreen or not depends on the TVs scaler, but since it's for viewing games/movies I'm sure it can handle the task. The tv isn't widescreen?!?! wtf??

Blu-ray, if they don't have it, don't buy it. We got a ps3 and I don't really care for it, but if I was going to get bluray I would definitely just buy a ps3. It's cheaper and more functional.

And you're wrong, 720p is shittons clearer than regular dvds. I don't know how I used to live with DVDs they look grainy like the **** I used to download
