negative thing (kind of, dosent bother me now but may later): contract is 6/2 as in 6 yrs active and 2yrs inactive instead of a 4/4
but
positive thing: 15,000 signing bonus, and im not sure if i still am eligible but i may be able to get another 5,000 shipping bonus(the money really dosent matter to me but im not going to refuse it)
so.......
now its really setting in and im kinda ------- nervous. not like i dont want to join nervous but like, holy ---- i leave in 7 days nervous.

Cool. Good for you.

I am going to say one thing.

MAKE SURE THAT MONEY IS IN YOUR CONTRACT!!! YOU RATE IT, DO NOT SAY ---- IT!!!

You wont get your money probably until you hit the fleet. They might run it at SOI but probably not.

Good luck man.

BTW, things like your cell phone contract can be put on hold while you are at boot camp. That will save you the 3 months in contract fees while you are gone.

yeah, i think i have to get a form or some ---- from my recruiter?

is that how it work?

Re: big ass marine corp discussion. to be or not to be, infantry.

you would have to ask your recruiter on that one but its no different than us. When we deploy for over 30 days, we can suspend our ----.

it's not for everyone, that's for sure. i scored a 135 GT, 94 overall, and i still went infantry. at the time, i wanted to be the baddest ----------er on the planet. 30 months out of my 48 month enlistment i was deployed overseas. no taxes and imm. danger pay are fun, but at the end of the day, you haven't learned a ------- thing, except how to flatten yourself against the ground, and you're more proficient and for the moment psychologically prepared to take another life.

it sounds badass, but it's not. it fucks with your psyche for a long time. 3 months ago or so, i woke up in the middle of the night to my girlfriend slapping my face and trying to scream. i had my hands around her throat, and i didn't have a ------- clue. wasn't the first time, either. two'ish years ago, i broke 3 bones in my right hand from having another episode at night. punched the side of my wooden framed bed in a dead sleep. before i went in, i had absolutely no violent tendencies, and since then i have a ridiculously low tolerance for bullshittery or people in general. i get extremely tense in crowds. it sucks.

also, there's no real aftermarket for that skill, save blackwater or dyncorp, both of which i could have worked for. you're smart, that's obvious. go do something that will benefit you when you get out. save infantry for the people that need to do it (i.e. guys that can't do anything else).

just my .02

Couldn't agree with you more. He went in on that 03 contract though. Lots of brains and did the dumbest job they could offer him. :l
He wanted to be the billy bad ass Marine that everyone see's on TV and unless the O0 decides he wants to invade Afghanastan...he will probably never see or hear a bullet fly over his head. When his 6 year (signed up for that to) contract is over...he can get out and say "I trained to kill people" and everyone is gonna say WTF. The MC has a bit of advantage with the leadership principals, etc...so that could help him out but over-all...hes gonna be back at square one when its all said and done.

This week, he probably finished his medical ----, getting another clearance from the Navy Doc's..and tomorrow...its 'black friday' or pickup day.
Gets up around 5, moves into his new squad bay...and meets his Drill Instructors. From there...its game on.
Here is a schedual if anyone wants to follow it.

You were too soft on him, Frank. Right now he's hating life because the instant gratification of being Billy badass isn't sinking in. He's in boot camp during Christmas, and all he's thinking right now is that I'm a genious.

(Yeah, the spell check is saying I spelled genious wrong, but that doesn't mean I'm not)

Re: big ass marine corp discussion. to be or not to be, infantry.

who the hell uses the spell check?

I wasnt hard on him, I just told him the truth. The guy already had his mind made up about joining, I just wanted to help him out. He will hate life when some dipshit who is in charge of him has him doing the most retarded ---- ever. Like field daying his room until 2am or some dumb ---- like that. Wait until he sits in a power point by death safety stand down for 2 days straight. He has it coming to him ;)

Man, I thought the exact same thing when I pulled it out of the mailbox. Recruit Stains. He will NEVER hear the end of that one...even out of boot camp.

Good thread, can't believe I missed this one. I'm considering going back in at the end of the summer, depending of course on how much ---- changes between now and then.

Re: big ass marine corp discussion. to be or not to be, infantry.

ok after reading a bit more of this threat let me put in a few more cents... what a recon contract will get you is a guarantee of being able to take the recon indoc during your time at ITB (infantry training battalion) SOI is school of infantry and also incorporates MCT (marine combat training) which every marine other then infantry goes through before their MOS school. if you get a UH contract which is just basic infantry you will still get a chance to take the recon indoc. if you decide to take the recon contract or even participate in the recon indoc under a basic UH contract and you can't pass it then the only thing that will happen is they don't allow you to attend the recon schooling after completing ITB.. you will still be marine corps infantry and you will be assigned to a standard infantry battalion. the one disadvantage to doing the recon indoc is that you will be forced to be an 0311 (basic rifleman) the other options you have at ITB if you choose not to take the recon indoc there are 0331 (machine gunner) 0341 (morter man) 0351 (assaultman--> demolition, explosive and manual breaching and the SMAW which is a light amour rocket launcher) and 0352 (antiarmour man --> guided antiarmour missile launchers)

hopefully that wasn't too confusing.. if it was let me know and ill try to explain better

and unless its changed the recon indoc is a 1st class PFT in boots and uts, 500m swim in cammies and 30 min treading water in cammmies
