touche.....if you were to rebuild the bottom end of your si motor (d16a6) with new rings and bearings etc. and you do it right, then add a d16y8 vtec head (we know this as a mini me) and use the d16a6 si distributor, intake mani, throttle body, fuel rail and injectors, etc. it will be a fairly easy job to do, there are about 150,000 write ups you can find on it to help through, and a b16a swapped hatch will have a hard time getting away from you, but you will easily do it for under $1,000, run it on an 89 integra ecu, and either an rpm switch or an afc for vtec, or you go chipped ecu....

Re: best swap for a beginner

depends on what you want you car to do?

if you want a platform that you can build and be reliable to a decent amount of power, go b16a

if you wanna b series w torque go ls, not so reliable

if you want a really cheap swap without having to do any mods to the wiring/chassis go with the d series vtec

either way, turbo the ---- out of the motor

89shithatch 05-23-2006 10:21 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

ill pry just go sohv vtec so i can save money, learn more bout swaps, and i can use all my same ---- cept a computer

Re: best swap for a beginner

dohc zc is an easy dropin swap, basic handtools, pry bar, 32mm sockets, breaker bar and a buddy and you can probably get it done in 2 solid days if your both fairly new

You have to know semi what youre doing though

I wouldnt go b series on my first swap, ---- i'll never go b

89shithatch 05-23-2006 10:35 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

so dohc zc is still d series?

Yea but remember the ZC dosen't have much aftermarket following and parts may be hard to find if you need something...just boost a D16a6 and don't mess with any vtec it is over rated and not worth it and SOHC vtec isn't really vtec

there is so much engineering in a turbo kit, along with many tech. difficulties, nor have anyone who knows much bout turbocharging round here. I think a swap would pry be the best thing for me since it is easy. Where is the best place to get complete zc swaps? thanks

Turblow 05-23-2006 11:18 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

a dual cam zc swap would be your best bet man, there cheap easy and very reliable

Thatll take a good 2 days, maybe $1000 total

I dunno if you plan on boosting it or not

If not, pick up a pg7 ecu so you can redline that bitch like it wants to (just plugs in) and a nice i/h/e combo used for under $600 and youll have a nic elittle car that can move

add some budget boost for $1000 and ---- your moving for cheap

And yes, axles, tranny, wiring, ecu all swap over just mint. Definetely do it

Sohc vtec is defientely overrated btw- not worth the trouble

sikcrx89 05-23-2006 11:26 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

go dohc zc i can get the whole thing engine and zc tranny all day long for $550

Re: best swap for a beginner

pm6 should run it fine but not up to its potential...also did you say a turbo kit is to hard to do?? There is a lot of retarded people here that have put together turbo kits here :P...just do a little research and you can do it on your own, I did, only had someone weld stuff for me and the rest I did myself, once you understand how turbo works and what it does you will be able to make a good safe kit

that one will throw you a few curve balls because its 92-95 (obd1). look for an obd0 DOHC ZC or a 88-91 model year DOHC ZC.

one thing you WILL need to do for wiring is move two wires from the dist to where the exhaust cam ends on the sensor their, it's not hard.

i would start with an ls. later you can add vtec head, then go turbo later still and in the end youll have a real fast car that you built on a budget ;D

well I turboed my D series and had fun and learned a lot but wanted more so i swapped to an LS and am finishing up a new turbo kit for it...maybe you just want to progress like that get your feet wet before you jump in...but honestly i wish i swapped to B first, but either one can cost about the same turbo or swap

Researcher 05-24-2006 02:10 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

take your motor out and put it back in that is the easiest :-X But in all honesty go witht he ls you will be impressed

davcivic 05-24-2006 02:48 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

If you are going to bother with a swap, do the LS, you can find complete swaps cheap, looking in the right place. 90-91 integra get everything from it, it will all bolt right in....You gotta find a good deal from a private seller, any engine place will try to charge you full price.

I got my JDM b16a complete, engine, tranny ECU, wiring, axles, shift linkage, and anything else I wanted out of the car for $900, after selling the tranny for $600 everything else was only $300 for me.
Same swap from an engine importer would have been easy $2500.

You can find an LS swap for less than 1000. I don't know where you live, but around here it's not that hard. I can get a free ls head and tranny today if I wanted. Of course you gotta know people that will help you out and call when something like this pops up.

89shithatch 05-24-2006 03:07 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

i think i may just go zc dohc, simply for price reasons and simplicity. I have gained a lot of information last night and they seem like an easy swap, not to mention 130hp in a hatch. i got bout 600.00 i can spend, so if anyone knows anyone who has a good motor in the midwest let me kno. I need to get the ball rollin on this ----.

davcivic 05-24-2006 03:12 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

I guess the simplicity of a ZC and a complete B swap is really about the same. Do some more research on b swaps, ls swaps, and stuff like that. Honestly it's about the same. And you can find a complete ls swap for $600......

The ZC is a great engine, but the LS is even better. Don't be afraid, doing the swap is the same work, no wiring needed(well minor changes but the same with both), It's really the same.

89shithatch 05-24-2006 03:15 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

where is the best place to find these swaps? I checked aby and there is not much. I live in the midwest

Find a local forum, search in there. Go to car meets, ask around. Put a sign in your car windo, "LOOKING FOR AN LS SWAP". Stuff like that.

sikcrx89 05-24-2006 10:44 PM

Re: best swap for a beginner

ls motors arent that much betterthey only have 10 more horsepower than zc on paper and a zc bolts in no mount bullshit shift linkage crap and converting from obd0-1 the zc is a straight forward bolt in affair could easyly do the swap in 4-6 hours.
