Are battery gases harmful?

I just moved my battery to the trunk the other day and I was talkin to this guy and he says that batteries give off harmful and explosive gases. He said I need to get a sealed box with a drain hose routed outside the car. I've seen boxes that come with those hoses but didn't know if it was bullshit or not. Anyone?
