bassing it up

quadnie and I have been discussing how to bring bass to my car in PMs for a little while and he suggested that I start a thread to help some of the other ricers on this site get some bass in their slow ass cars.

http://4.pichold.com/boom.jpg
those are some speakers I took from my mom's house (probably stolen) with my LS block on top for a size reference. they're ------- huge, that box won't even fit in my hatch. problem is the speakers are blown, quadnie said to ditch those pieces of ---- and just start over by getting some good subs and building my own box.

quadnie said that stolen ---- is cheapest. I don't want to get stolen ---- because what that does is contribute to stealing and then the next thing that I know I go outside and all my ---- is stolen and somebody is trying to sell it to me for a real cheap price, ---- that.

4 speakers
Head Unit
8 gauge power wire running from battery to amp location
RCA cable running from head unit to amp
Amp with built in crossover
Speaker boxes/speakers

See what kinda hookup you can get on stolen ----, otherwise, look here for the following parts:

speakers - check your junk yard for cars with the premium audio system that you can pick up cheap (will tell you how to test if you want to go that route)

head unit - stolen route, or check ebay for a decent used one for like $20, I can go into that more later

amp - once again, ebay. I check into that for you later

woofers - find some decent ones on ebay

woofer enclosure - build it yourself from cheap materials

You can also get something like a bass tube, where it will have the amp built into the tube with woofer. I have found that they don't sound all that great in hatchbacks, sound best in a trunk of a sedan/coupe car.
quadnie says that ebay is a good place to look, as well as pawnshops, I haven't checked out either because I'm a lazy ass. He also said to check for clearance and good sales at places like circuit city.

Re:bassing it up

Yeah, I'm a former bass-head. I ran fosgates and orion amps.. well I had a lot of ----.

Auto security will help you prevent getting jacked, but like I said, nothing wrong with hot ----. If it has a serial tag on it, rip it off.

"no officer, I don't know if this is stolen"

I remember back when I was 17 I was installing stereos/systems in cars and I used to drive around like a crackhead with all the equipment in my back seat, first time I got pulled over the cop was ------- with me thinking I was going around stealing head units.

Remember that posession is 90% of the law.

Re:bassing it up

those speakers blow ass... they look like they're from the 80s. im certain that 10inch subs that are new will be 3x as powerful and sound 100x better than those things.

these sound decent in my car.

I use to have 2 Solobaric 12's in a bandpass box in my Crx. My buddy use to work at this real high end stereo shop so we got my car dialed in pretty good. Soundstream Reference 700 AMP, all with 1'OT gauge wire, farad capacitor's blah blah.. the works. It use to make my ears practically bleed.

Once it all got stolen, I never cared to do it again... :-\

Re:bassing it up

I had 2 12" Kicker Comp VRs (2002 versions) i a 5 cu foot ported box (HUGE/heavy/solid) with a Lanzar Vibe 1200d at 1 ohm, it put out about 1250wrms (tested it)!! 4 gauge wire and a 140 amp rewound alt were needed to sufficiently power it but holy ----, that thing was hitting about 147db from the trunk, imagine if it were in a hatch... thats seriously loud for a daily driver.

solobaric subs are awesome! i think they're the best subs out there

Re:bassing it up

It's been a while since I've been in the boomin' game, but I think the best setup in a hatch/CRX would be two 10s in a full enclosure box. That's what I had, worked well in the old rex.

Brand name is going to be sacraficed for budget here with kyle.

accordepicenter 05-18-2004 03:49 PM

Re:bassing it up

yeah ive been out of it for about a year now... somtimes i miss it somtimes i dont, id rather go fast. Just remember, the sound is 5/10ths enclosure 3/10ths sub, 1/10th amp. SO if you were going on a budget and wanted some slam, either make yourself or buy a very good (you need accurate specs reccomended for the sub) enclosure, although most premade enclosures suck ass. You can get good sound if you have a good designed box and ok drivers with a crappy amp... alot of it has to do with the enclosure.

I sold all my stereo ---- and started buying turbo ----. I think I made the right decision. My ears are fucked up enough. I was never happy with my setups anyways. I always wanted it to be louder or hit harder or sound cleaner.

I guess it's the same way with boosting. You always want more and you always want to be faster. :-\ I'm just not into that ---- anymore. I'm happy with a deck and a couple 6.1/4's. 8)

Same here, I used to have some bangin systems but was never satisfied. I sold it to buy turbo stuff, sometimes I wish I had some beat again, but nothing near what I used to have.

whole lot of feedback from you ricer bassers, thanks. I'm trying to decide between trying my luck with ebay and the pawnshops or getting the ---- from xplo or the local stores.

what do you guys think of this rice-assed idea: I want to put some subs under the front 2 seats, I got the idea from the local farley's where they have a game called Hydro Thunder and it feels like there's some bass producing ---- under the seat.

HMT-Admin 05-18-2004 11:28 PM

Re:bassing it up

Honestly.. get a nice set of subs, 10's/12's whatever.. not a cheapy set. Put them in a nice sealed box with a decent Amp and good wiring and you will be good to go.

Any woofer under 100 bucks a piece is just garbage..

Solobarics
Eclipse Titanium
Xtant
Diamond
JL w6's are all pretty decent, there are so many damn audio companys around.

Re:bassing it up

I've had the same system in my car since the year I got it (1996) It's not the greatest, but it has always been fine for me.

2 Crunch 12's - $75 used 8 years ago
Custom isobaric enclosure .75 ft³
RF Punch 60ix bridged mono at 1 ohm
Punch 40i pushing 2 MTX Black Gold 6½'s and 2 Pioneer 3 ways in the doors.
MTX RTX01 xover
The head unit has changed a few times. I just use whatever I can get cheap that has 2 pre-outs.
I also put in a Clifford ACE 500 alarm that is still going strong today.

I think I paid around $1000 total for everything with the alarm being half of that and it has lasted 8 years so that's a pretty decent return on investment. The amps were bought brand new at an electronics clearance.

I have two rockford HX2 punch subs, 1000watts a piece baby :-* and a alpine v12 amp, pretty powerfull ----!

I thought that with all the hatred of looking fast and not going fast people on here wouldn't be in touch with sounding good, but I guess not. I'll go hit up wal-mart and a few of the audio stores around to get some ideas. would anyone recomend sony xplod ----? I know walmart sells it.

aight, so no sony head units or amps, how about their subs?

Re:bassing it up

ok.. i'll throw up some pics of my system. Home made fibreglass spare tire enclosure.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...43_17_full.jpg

and the amps in a vertical spot.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...43_15_full.jpg

I have since ditched the vertical amp mount and just bolted them down beside the speaker. With all the covers on the hatch you can't see anything. Even when the vertical mount was in use.

I agree about the amps. my parents and I got my little brother an entire setup for x-mas and the amp was toast in 2 months. We ended up getting a better amp (Kenwood) with more power for free.

But sony head units.. I just got one a few months ago.. works great, doesn't skip at all.

Honda16hb 05-19-2004 11:52 AM

Re:bassing it up

definetely homemade. what's better an open air box or one where the sub is completely enclosed, including the part on the opposite side fo the magnet, where that part is covered with plexiglass or something?

I don't know if I trust sony quality on anything if so many of their amps are blowing up

88crxSi 05-19-2004 11:54 AM

Re:bassing it up

ported boxes (ones with a 3" hole) require more power and a larger box. bandpass = crap (thats where the sub's front is IN its own box, while the rest is in another). I like the sound on an enclosed box more.. it's punchier instead of boomier. It's all about matching. Match the box to the required size as per the sub and match the amp to the watt's of the sub. It may not look pretty but alot of time and measuring went into that sub box and it certainly shows it.

Honda16hb 05-19-2004 12:03 PM

Re:bassing it up

so an enclosed box is where the back of the sub is in a sealed box and the front is in the open air, like you have, right?

Xplocivic 05-19-2004 12:05 PM

Re:bassing it up

Xplod= ass

I just dumped Sony from my store, cause it blows som much ass. We picked up JVC Arsenal in its place and we're pretty happy with that stuff.

As far as subs go right now, the hottest thing is MTX's new SledgeHammer line-up. I sell those things faster then flap-jacks on a Sunday morning. They look cool as hell and pound your ------- brains out, even underpowered! Not too damn expensive either, I have a couple display boxes that I have running, and I don't put a price tag on them, I ask the customer after he hears it how much he thinks it is, he'll say something high and I'll usually come back with less then half of what he said, they go :o and then they pull out the dough, it works great. ;D

Honda16hb 05-19-2004 12:12 PM

Re:bassing it up

so what's the kyle price on some of those mtx sledgehammers? I'm thinking 25, so I'll send you 12.5 for each?

Do you find the CD's stick while the eject? i've had two KDS-550s do that to me. Either way, the JVC stuff may not be the best looking/performing but they stand the test of time.

Re:bassing it up

My brother actually has the integra setup with all sony. Overpriced head unit, amp, subs. I think the 4 mids came from wal mart. I have installed a few sets of sony xplod mids into cars (like the yellow CRX Si had some). The car is setup fairly light, and works out well (one amp is a kenwood). The head unit is surviving since everythign is run off of RCA wires, not connected directly to the head unit. Overall I think the head unit is crap compared to the high end clarion I had in the same time era (which was like when matrix 1 came out). Unless the deal was really sweet, I would only hook up if the price was right with sony products.

Full enclosure box is what you want. Which means it's a box, no ports, just two speaker holes cut into it. Find the specs on the speakers you get to perform best within that box. Full enclosures sound best in hatchbacks, I normally go for isoberic or bandpass in a sedan type car.
