Great job untill you get older and everything starts to hurt all the time. I was a ASE master tech for ten years at a lot of different places, stay away from company owned tire stores like Firestone and Goodyear, privatley owned stores usually pay better and treat there employees better. Car Max WAS a good place to work but they went to hell in the last couple of years. Most dealers suck, warranty work doesn't pay well and the service work that does pay usually gets grabbed up by the bosses buddies. It's not a bad way to make a living don't get me wrong, you just have to know how to play the game to get ahead and stay there.

I'm a Hyundai tech, almost 3 years. I had no school whatsoever, got a job at autozone for a year out of high school, and learned a lot there. Then I got hired.

A degree in Automotive Technology always look good, but I'm an ASE master tech (with my L1, thank you very much), and a Hyundai expert tech who never got one. I make good money at my small dealership. I'm actually still the bottom rung of the totem pole (3 techs including me, 1 service advisor, 1 service manager, and the parts guy). All the techs and the service manager are all ASE master techs.

Moral of the story: if you really think you know enough, start applying when you feel ready. School will teach you a lot, but experience is the best teacher.

i was enrolled in toyota tech program and i decided to change because i saw no room to advance after like a full line tech. sure flat rate 60k a year, whatever but there isnt anywhere to expand, except to race team (good luck)

so i changed to power engineering, room to expand and loads of cash, making sure u americans dont fuckup the power grid again! ;D

man, do what you have a passion for. if getting nicks and cuts on your hands averyday is an acceptable standard, then go for it. im thinking being a mechanic would be like being a pornstar... the first few days are fun, but you'll eventually just be another ho.
