Anybody else into fish tanks? Added pics this time. X2.

I know im not the only one here who is interested in them. I have been looking around a lot recently on craigslist and classifieds sections for a good (near mint) condition at least 55 gallon aquarium but that doesn't seem to be working. So the other day i was at petsmart and found out they have brand new 55 gallon aquariums for $109 with the petsmart card. So on friday when my check hits ill be picking one up. Im either going to go with this filter.....

http://www.petsolutions.com/350B-Pen...63+C99999.aspx

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1344/filter1jd7.jpg

Its rated for up to 70 gallons and flows 330 gph. I read somewhere while researching that a filter should flow 5 gallons for every 1 gallon of water, so 5x55=275. 300>275 so it should work pretty good.

On the other hand, i would really like to try an under gravel filter, since its an excellent biological filter. But as to the dimensions of the tank and what type of the bottom liner things to use, i don't know. So im pretty lost still on what to get for that. Hell i don't even know what kind of fish i want to get yet, Maybe some sharks of some kind and a couple cichlids, both aggressive fish, but the cichlids will outgrow the sharks.

I already have 4 smaller aquariums. 1 10g, 2 20g, and 1 30g tank but i want something bigger now. And everything i have read says its actually easier to maintain a larger tank than a smaller tank.

I also want to add one of these to my exotic animals collection.

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/9...ueazurewa0.jpg

But at $100 a pop, im going to be one broke ass person here soon cuz just having one is kinda boring.

Oh yeah, before i forget, this site right here has some pretty good deals on larger aquariums.

UPDATE

Finally got around to posting some pics of a few of my tanks.

This is the saltwater i just started about a week ago. Just 20 pounds of agragite and 4 pounds of live rock right now, its still cycling at the moment. It should be done in about a week or so then i will be getting a shark or something. Oh yeah, this is a 30 gallon.

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/4...anks001tl5.jpg

This one kinda sucks.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/4...anks002sk1.jpg

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/3...anks003ka5.jpg

This is my girlfriends baby red ear sliders tank. Couple of gold fish in it too. Really needs a good cleaning but i just don't have the time right now, maybe tomorrow. This one is a 20 gallon long.
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/8...anks004ea3.jpg

This is my 20 gallon freshwater tank. Just some of those gold fish that go from black to orange sometimes, an oscar, and 3 algea eaters. Now that im looking at it, it looks crooked....
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/2...anks005cp8.jpg

And this is my 2-3 year old Red Ear Sliders tank. Its a 55 gallon breeder terrerium with 24 gallons of water in it. The lights are, on the far left a uva, the bright blue one is a uvb, and the right is a 150 watt heat bulb for basking.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/6...anks006ys2.jpg

I have a couple others, but i can't get a picture to come out right becuase of the low lighting, but im off tomorrow so ill try and fix that. Oh yeah, i ended up buying that filter above. Came out to like 30 and some change shipped. Im going to use it on my quarintine/hospital tank once this one is all cycled and ready for fish.

Can you get high if you lick those frogs?

If you equate death with being high then yes.

my friend is really into them, ill try to get a pic of hhis setup. hes running saltwater

Re: Anybody else into fish tanks?

under gravel really needs a large pickup to flow anything worthy of suction, they usually just suck the area near the pickup. back of tank take up space. get a 110v water-safe pump, mount it in a stand under the tank, and build a filter setup from 6" dwv pvc and endcaps. THEN you can use that as an under gravel, and keep enough volume flowing for sufficient cleaning. also, get catfich/plecos/algae eaters.

RotaryGeek 01-24-2008 01:20 AM

Re: Anybody else into fish tanks?

yeah algea eaters are a must, i know i want probably two of them. i dont really understand what your talking about but it sounds cool.

Re: Anybody else into fish tanks?

I have a pretty badass aquarium. Honestly, i run one shitty wishper filter thats made for like a 10gallon, and i have around a 45gallon tank. I never have problems. But then again, i have massive amounts of plant life, and a pretty full spectrum ecosystem in there. Definitely an awkward combo of creatures. I have a florida gar, a tiger oscar, a siren, two ropefish, two plecos, two loaches (forget which kind), 3 oregon newts, try to keep it stocked with feeders (I buy 50 feeders at least once a week) and I have two dinosaur bichirs in my smaller "growing/feeding tank" that i'm just waiting on so they get big enough that they won't get eaten. But its definitely important to have a good amount of gravel in the bottom to hold the detritus and ---- that doesnt get filtered, and it will eventually form a sort of soil for your plants to grow in. And real plants are a must. I'll take some pics of mine later, its my pride n joy... just sucks i move so often, its a pain in the ass and likely traumatizing for the little guys

Re: Anybody else into fish tanks?

I am running the Marineland C-220 Multi-stage cansiter filter. It works awsome and flows great. has different layers of filtration in it and wasn't to spendy. Like $125 or something.
It has
Foam Pads
Polishing Pads
Ceramic Rings
And Carbon bags for filtering.

i used to have a 125g with one bad ass cichlid in it.
now i have a 20g salt water setup. i had 2 clowns and one fire fish, but when i moved from vegas back to sd my clowns died. oh and in the 20g i have about 10 crabs and 12#'s live rock

Currently I have an African Cichlid tank. I have a Fluval 205 (canister filter) and an Aquaclear 50 on the back. I just like saying, "I have a tank full of Africans"

I had an Oscar that started at an inch long and grew to almost a foot long in 7 years. I was cried when he died :'( He was such a badass fish.

I used to have two pdf's. They were D. Azureus. I loved them, I just didn't have the time to pay attention to them and love them enough. So I gave them away. I'd suggest you check out http://www.dendroboard.com/phpBB2/ That place will get you hooked in no time flat. The biggest pain in taking care of them is making fruit fly cultures once a week but you get fast at it.

ill try to post up a couple pics today of my tanks and some more animals. still looking into doing an under gravel filter system, but im still lost on what to use for a 55 gallon tank. i would love to do a salt water tank, but damn thats a lot of work and patience. Thanks for the dendroboards.com link. Looks like a pretty good site.

Damn your right, i want to make one now. I have a couple of smaller aquariums i could use to learn on then maybe upgrade to a 55 gallon.

Re: Anybody else into fish tanks?

i have a 55 gallon cichlid tank and i have a aqua tech 30-60 and a aquaclear 500 (rated for 110 gallons) on it for filtration and find that combo does a realy good job of keeping everything clean and clear. i also have a 90 gallon semi planted tank and i use a fluval 305 witch is rated for a 75 gallon tank but i do regular water changes and it does the job pretty good but i only have small fish (mostly tetra's) in that tank. i also have a 30 gallon salt water tank with a 10 gallon sump with a whisper 2-10 gallon filter (for polishing the water) a protein skimmer rated for a 75 gallon tank and a maxijet 1000 return pump and i also have a maxijet 1200 in the tank for circulation along with another powerhead that i cant remember the name of right now. thats my 3 main tank and i have a few other small tanks to. not bad for a guy whos only 15 eh. i wouldn't recommend using a undergravle filter because i find alot of detritus builds up and decomposes witch causes alot of algae. and if you do run one run it in reverse so it takes water from the top of the tank and forces it under and through the gravel and gets all the detritus into the water column where it can then be removed by another type of filter. man i feel like a nerd now after typing all that but what ever. fish and things with moving parts and/or engines are about all im intrested in hobby wise.

I've got like a ~50ga tank with about 6 fish in it. Have had them for about a year and a half so I must be doing something right. I have 2 filters on it, which is probbaly overkill, but it seems to be working pretty good and the fish are still alive sooo......

The rocks are always pretty nast though. :l

Yeah well tomorrow morning im going to go pick up some live sand and live rock, salt solution, hydrometer, and ph testing stuff to start my 30 gallon saltwater tank tommorrow. Im going to just get it up and running with like 2 pounds of rock in it to cycle it till the first of next month when i get paid. Then im going to get the whole cast of finding nemo lol. 1-2 at a time though is going to take forever, and its a valentines day present for my girl. She loves that movie, hell anything to do with disney she loves. She is like a 13 year old in a 20 year olds body lol. Should be pretty cool though. Next month ill get a skimmer and maybe some other stuff. Petsolutions.com has some really good deals on stuff if you don't mind the shipping.

dont forget the anemone if your getting a clownfish. oh yeah and dont try to buy a big clown fish and a little one. They are very territorial and the big one will kill the little one

Clow fish are good to start the tank. They are harty and seldomly die out of the blue.

My tank overheated during the summer, (water cooler took a ---- and blew out) I was gone for the weekend and there was a heatwave, when i came back the only thing that survived was the clownfish and a fire shrimp.. tank got to 100, ive since them bought a better cooler. painfully expensive lesson learned.

Re: Anybody else into fish tanks? Added pics this time.

yeah i dont know about getting clownfish. im getting a starfish for sure. and snails to help keep the cleanup to a minimum. should be a good lesson having my first saltwater tank in a 30 gallon. i still need to do a lot of research on the fish im getting and desease controlling. and desease curing. but ill have a second hospital tank for that. and dont ever use copper in a saltwater aqurium cuz the silicone absorbs it and never comes all the way out.

anybody know anything that will clean extremely hard ater spots off a tank? buddy of mine has a 150 gallon tha was a satwater tank and nothing i have tried will ake that ---- off. even a razor blade wont....

vinegor works to a certain extent.

maybe CLR, but i wouldnt recomend that. you would have to make sure that ---- washed off completely otherwise your fish are gonna die.

heres my nanocube. its pretty empty right now. Used to have 2 fire fish, a chevron tang, a midas blenny, and a yellow tang, along with some small crabs, a fire shrimp , a green bubble tiped anemone and a black urchin and a bunch of little coral fragments. But my water cooler took a ---- and everything died, except the clown fish and its anemone.

slowly ill build it back up. I just dont have the time to take care of all that ----. I just changed the water so its all clowdy

Wow that looks nice. Is that live rock or coral? Im still new to this and can't tell the difference. Anybody know the name of the fish in duece bigallow? the big puffy one (not a puffer). Also, i tried lemon juice, lime juice, razorblades, vinegar, clr, and that strong ass acid used to clean pools. Nothing worked on it.

I have a 45g tank, i never had fish in it, i had a 2 year old bearded dragon, one of the coolest lizards by far! untill he owned himself by digging under some rocks, which fell on him and then killed him

http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...olitanmx28.jpg

its a lion fish... those shits are badass.. I wanted one but my tank is wayyyyyy to small. oh yeah did i mention they are poisonous!

THats live rock with remnants of coral attached to it. I cant wait to get my taxes, so i can start buying some more stuff to put in it. my son loves staring at the fish. at one point there was about 1k worth of stuff in there. That ---- starts to get expensive after a while. Slowly but surely you'll get your setup the way you like it. Just start buying some more live rocks and use live coral sand, its the best natural filter.

Start off small with some inexpensive fish so if something goes wrong you dont loose your investment. a cleaner shrimp, and some small crabs to keep your rocks clean.

I probably have about ~$30 invested in my tank. You guys are crazy for spending that kinda money on a fish tank. :S

I looked into a salt water tank, but the shop told me I'd be looking at about $1000 to get it started from scratch. :-X No thanks. I'll stick to my $3 Walmart fish and the tank I got for free. :P Walmart fish have a lifetime warranty, too. If they die, stick them in a bag and take them back for a new one. :6

4 Red belly Piranha. They are much bigger now and can eat 60 goldfish a week if we fed them that much.

Where did you find the piranhas and how much do they cost to buy/take care of?

rsmith2786 02-09-2008 01:02 PM

Re: Anybody else into fish tanks? Added pics this time.

They were just at a local pet store. They are pretty common around here. They were maybe $10 each or less. 60 goldfish at $0.18 (Walmart) each comes out to about $10 and we feed them either every week or every other week.

oh god if only it were that easy for saltwater fish. I bought a blue tang for 70$ and the bitch died the next day. I phoned the store, they said to bring it back along with a water sample, (i kept my tank pretty clean and balanced) But i also kept the water from the bag it came in, so i gave them that and they gave me a new fish.

oh yeah doc. that ---- gets expensive, youve got the cost of the tank. the pumps, the filters, the sand, rocks corals, fish, and all the chemicals needed to sustain it, plus the testing equipment, it all adds up if you buy that ---- at once.
