Another new beater...UPDATE 3-22-07

Ok, some of you may remember that 95 teg I got for $500. It's finally in the driveway and should be drivable this weekend. Here's one I should be picking up Monday or Tuesday for $2250:

UPDATE:

Ok, so I got the thing today. Of course I've found some ---- that's wrong with it but I'm pretty satisfied with the purchase... Feels weird driving this thing, so touchy. It really seems like I can "feel" the lightness of the car. Anyway, pictures (and questions):

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx1.jpg
First look at that ---- Doug684 wrote, punkass. Hah, $2500 firm...I paid $2200 :6 The red circled crap, some sort of glue or epoxy. It seems like they glued a spoiler there ::) Any ideas on removal? It's like cement...

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx2.jpg
Shiny :-* Can I paint the hood with some gloss spray paint and rattlecan clearcoat? Will it turn out alright and somewhat match the car? The hood is a primer greyish/black with some splotches of yellow shining through (AAAAHHHH YELLOW :o). That bumper has to go, it was...nogger...rigged. The front end damage wasn't nearly as bad as I thought and how the previous picture made it seem. Might be a fraction of an inch pushed in, and the rad support is a little bent. I have to turn the wheel slightly to the right to go straight...but it doesn't veer off anywhere when I let go. How do I adjust this?? It's an annoyance and I'm OCD.

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx3.jpg
The ass. Notice the glue spots. It came with some turbo exhaust that sounds decent and doesn't drone when I'm cruising, only when I gets all up ons it. Finally put those wheels and tires to use, bought them months ago and put on the civic, which hasn't ran since before I got them. I need to finish putting on the head lol.

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx4.jpg
Decent condition. I love the seats, and they're probably in the best condition out of all the interior. There's a gap between the plastic around the shifter, and the plastic around the ebrake. It doesn't look right because I can see the metal and carpet sticking out, it's about a 4-6" gap between the two pieces. What's missing or wrong with it?

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx5.jpg
:l

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx6.jpg
What's good for getting the old plastics back to their shiny darkness (tha darkness! charlie murphy!)? Is there a piece that's supposed to go over those compartments? And if so...who's got one in great condition for sale?

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx7.jpg
Clean. But alas, what's that yellow in there...

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx8.jpg
w00t. Free stuff. Strut bar thingy and some neuspeed springs. I don't know ---- about suspension so someone tell me if those springs are good and if that's an ebay special strut bar thing (not that I care, just curious). Free p28 too, I think not chipped :( Will be great for when sini sells me his turbo kit 8)

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx10.jpg
This is the driver side door hinge :( He didn't tell me about this little problem. Looks like the uhh... hinge thing popped out and they slapped a bunch of bondo over it to try and hold it in, and that also popped off. Weld? Who would weld something like this? I don't have a welder or know anyone with one around here...

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/crx/crx9.jpg
Finally, here's that picture for whoever asked for a closeup. The guy glued that carbon fiber (wow tyte seems like real cf) piece to the console...yes, glued :X. Anything good to get rid of glue? Doesn't even look like he tried to make it look decent, I think I used glue better when I was eating it in kindergarten. Titanium shift knob (seems like real titanium and has that sexy anodizedish looking look) and some autometer gauges that are still hooked up. My car is always showing rich (I know these aren't very useful, but anyways it shows rich) which brings me to the main question...

So I drove the car. For the first few hundred rpm, it'll seem peppy, then QUICKLY seem weak. I'm talking about bogging to hell, even at 10% throttle. The afr gauge stays in rich, never gets to stoich. Since the car is NA, I'm assuming it should be stoich, right? I guess the car might run rich while it's warming up, but this stays rich all the time. It seems to smell rich. It doesn't sound right. Before I bought the car, I looked through HT at the guy's threads just to see if I could get some background on the car. He posted once that his mileage was HORRIBLE and his goal was 30mpg. He said he was selling it because of financial reasons...but now he's driving a 99-00 civic ex...so I'm thinking he sold it because he couldn't figure out what the problem is and he delivers pizza for his job. Oh, and he also said it smokes at high rpm...so I'm hoping it's just the richness...so I can boost this damn thing without extra work.

So here's what I'm thinking: When I helped doug684 change his timing belt, we put it all back together and it ran similarly. Very weak, sounded weird, and bad mileage. Timing belt was a tooth off. Does this sound like a timing issue with yous guys as well? :y

BTW it's a 1990 CRX SI. It had a d16y8 swap I'm guessing turbo because of guages and he said engine was "tired" when he got the car. Now it has a d16z6 with y8 head. He said vtec doesn't work and it burns a little oil, but I don't give a damn. Might do a cheap cheap HMT FTW turbo build on it.

Re: Another new beater...

Even though the car is in my city, I'm not able to get it until next Monday or Tuesday. I'll post more pics then.

tittyboy - where could I take the car to get one welded in for cheap? Can they do it at an exhaust shop or what?

Sadly, that would also be a pretty good price for that car up here, damage included. :'(

Re: Another new beater...

the front end will need some work
it looks like they fixed enough to fit the fender and head light
i say replace it
you can get a jober one cheap, with the bottom that kinked its not worth to fix it
if you take some pics with the bumper head lamps and fenders off i can give you more advice

Thanks atticus, when I get the chance I'll get the picture and show you. Would like some advice with getting it fixed and straightened out. I can get a "jober" one cheap? What's a jober one?

Atticus 03-15-2007 11:17 PM

Re: Another new beater...

jober = after market (auto body term)
you drill out the spot welds to remove the damaged one
clamp the jober in to place and weld it in
but first i need to see pictures to see if there is any thing pushed back or just minor damaged
you might need to do some hmt style pulling ;D

Ahhhh....like certifit stuff? Would you recommend a certifit bumper? There was this mexican dude that pulled my front end straight, and put on the certifit stuff for $100 (friend's friend) and the stuff didn't line up as good as oem but I don't know if it's the guys fault or the products. HMT style pulling...sounds fun :4 I should have it monday or tuesday, and probably won't have time (effort?) to get pics until the weekend.

Re: Another new beater...

yes jober dosent fit as good as oem but its alot cheaper and not that bad (honda is prety good for jober)
ya for 100 the guy pulled it enough so the fender fits and the hood closes
well see what has to be done when you get the pics
i got jober fenders hood lights bumper rebar and rad saport they fit decent
if you take the time you can make it look good

Yeah, I'll probably end up spending big money for some OEM stuff. I'm just picky when it comes to stuff like that. I dunno, will see how it goes.

88dx, is it a 88 crx? What condition is it in? Seriously I've seen riced out pieces of shits, and beat up stock crx's go for more than $2,250 here.

titty - I live in Huntsville AL. I dont know what places weld :-P

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/search...=&keywordsfyc=

There's a link to the crx's for sale within 300 miles from here. I did a search within 100 miles but that didn't find anything. Now, I know there are deals in the paper and on the streets...but they usually cost even more than autotrader AND are either beat to hell or have ricey crap all over them. The past two hondas I bought, were supposed to be a crx. But, I could never find one for a decent price. Average price in the 300 mile radius: $3,602

Oh, and bumper is going to get replaced.

AssHat!! 03-22-2007 02:25 AM

Re: Another new beater...UPDATE 3-22-07

Yes i know the going rate for a crx. Ive been looking for one in good shape for a few month's now. And if you search hard enuff you can find them dirt cheap in good shape. I have my eye on two at the moment one's a 89 hf the others a 88dx. The hf i can get for $800 all it need's is a new front spindle and a paint job every thing else is in very good shape, and it come's with mint si seat's. The dx i can get for $900 all's it need's is headlight's and a starter and minor body work.
I was just telling you what i would have paid and answerd a few quieston's you had. But the car is clean from what i can tell.

That seems like a good price for where I am. I sold mine for $1900 and the body was hammered, needed paint and some rot. It did have an LS swap and and ass load of new parts though.

Yeah, I know I could have got a better deal...there always seems to be one out there. But, I don't have time or motivation to go search for a car. I'll check a few classifieds, craigslist, ebay (bleh), drive to our "park and sell" lots, and autotrader. Most are seriously riced to hell, and they think that it increases value. Cars they ask $5k for I wouldn't even consider $1k.

Sooo...how bout that hinge and stuff?

the hinge, get full insurance, throw open door hard and say that the wind grabbed it ;)

to fix this you need some basic tools and a little mechanical know how
grinder
welder
hammer
a little scrap steal
cut off wheel would be nice but can do with out

Jorsher 03-24-2007 04:10 PM

Re: Another new beater...UPDATE 3-22-07

Haha I think I like sinister's idea better. My dad has a welder, so I guess next time I'm around his town we'll get it done. Going to block off the antenna, rear sprayer, and rear wiper as well for the hell of it.

Burnt a z6 map to the chipped ecu, runs a lot better. Just need to wire up vtec and setup dizzy timing I guess. Then for boost...and tuning

Pretty clean, good buy. Got some work to do, but nice find

Re: Another new beater...UPDATE 3-22-07

That would sell in an afternoon out here for that price. Add a turbo and it would sell for around $75k. :1

Doesn't look too bad. I'm hoping it was boosted at one time or another if it has a boost guage? :l

Well the boost and afr gauge are both operational, it has 2.5" full turbo exhaust. Had a chipped ecu (I should have downloaded the map before burning a new one), there were spots cut in the lower crossmember, ac was removed, and when the previous owner got the car he said the engine was wore out. I'm pretty sure it was boosted.

The guy had a virgin p28 in the car (he says) but it was running horrible compared to the chipped p28 I put in there with a stock z6 map. Very boggy and slow, ran very rich, no power at all. Now it runs great and only need to hook up vtak. It's smoking white, which is probably the headgasket. Can't a bad map burn out the headgasket? Under what conditions?

Dr.Boost 03-25-2007 10:16 PM

Re: Another new beater...UPDATE 3-22-07

If it was boosted with a stock P28 I'm sure it has some problems. :P My guess is even if he did have some sort of chipped ECU or something the head gasket is blown. It's a Honda. :P

I think it was boosted with the chipped p28, and when the guy I bought it from bought it and changed out the y8 for a z6 block, he put the virgin p28 in it...which you can't use because the timing is off for the y8 head. I figure that's what fucked the gasket up (if it is fucked up).

Oh yeah, just bought SinisterCRX's turbo setup, so expect some boost in the near future.
