4-door sedan; 5 passenger capacity. Based on the Honda Civic sedan the 1.6EL is sold in Canada only. It is designed to appeal to young couples with children who want to move from a sporty hatchback to a more practical 4-door sedan. It uses the 127 horsepower VTEC four cylinder engine from the Civic Coupe Si rather than the Civic sedan. Front and rear styling is more conservative than the Civic, and the interior is better-trimmed. Standard features include 15 inch tires, dual air bags, 50 watt AM/FM stereo with four speakers, power windows and door locks, 60/40 split rear seats, tilt steering wheel, tachometer, cruise control, and a remote keyless entry system with a 'panic' feature. Sport models add 5 spoke alloy wheels, air conditioning, an improved stereo with CD player, and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes. Premium models add leather seats and a power glass sunroof (with sunshade). Acura says some features were designed with Canadian winters in mind (i.e.: wide spray windshield washer jets, heated power door mirrors), but a block heater is optional.
Based on Honda's Civic sedan, the 1.6 EL is powered by 1590 cc inline four. Equipped with Honda's variable valve timing means that it pumps out a creditable 127 horsepower, but at higher rpm. That means it's better suited to the 5-speed manual than the 4-speed automatic which tends to 'hunt' for the right gear on long uphills. An excellent reputation for reliability is the hallmark of the entire Civic-based lineup. Interior volume and layout are identical to the Civic's though being an Acura the EL gets better trim levels including an upgraded cloth. Airbags are standard, but ABS is not available on the base SE. Unlike the Civic, air conditioning is standard on all ELs as are power locks and windows. Cynics might dismiss the EL as just a warmed-over Honda, but the EL is selling in droves to people that want precisely that, a more luxurious Civic.
