no, aluminum simply melts. i know ive tried it. it pops ike crazy and motlen aluminum falls on your foot and burns through your shoe. dont try it. steel is the best. it also has to be pretty thick too.

The problem you had was probably not cleaning the aluminum good enough. The same exact thing will happen with a tig welder. Before aluminum can be welded you have to clean the surface with a stainless brush or rough 3m pad that has never been on anything but aluminum. Then it needs to also be cleaned with acetone. When aluminum sits out it gots a couting of aluminum oxide on the outside, aluminum oxide melts at around 3 times the temp of aluminum. If you don't get it off the inside will melt before the outer skin. Then when you finally get the outside to pool the inside will just poor out.
