Default The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In

That's right, yesterday I bought a D16a6 longblock and ecu for $100 and also found a cable SI tranny for $100, the only parts I need to buy are a dizzy and plug wires. What's this going in you might ask? Well if you didn't already know I bought an 89 std hatch about 8 months ago and it came with the 70hp D15b1 and 4 speed tranny. I liked it at first because it got great gas mileage, but holy hell this thing is ------- slow as *****. I wasn't planning on doing anything to this motor since it's just a daily driver/commuter car, but I'm sick of having to shift down to 2nd gear when going up any incline. I found some good deals on a local car forum and though I'd jump on it.

What are my plans? Well I'm just going to gather all the stuff I need for the swap (not too much left really), but it probably won't go in for a few months. I already have the tranny apart and it looks like it needs new bearings and a little tlc. Then I plan on swapping the stock A6 in my car. First I want to dyno my D15b1 and see what it puts down, then dyno the stock A6 (should be fun to get a before swap, after swap, then after it's built dynos). After I get bored with the stock motor I will pull it out and slap some high comp ZC pistons and a decent cam in there, pretty much exactly what Jeff did on his A6 Wheeze build. Mine won't have to look stock, so I will be able to use an aftermarket header and intake, which means no porting for hours lol. I am going to try and do all the work myslef and also keep it as cheap as possible, since this is a daily driver and will still be slow no matter what I do haha.

I have been reading up a lot on A6 budget builds lately, especially Jeff's thread, but pictures in that thread would help! I should be able to get all this done for fairly cheap though and defintely less than a complete b-series swap would have cost me. Oh and remember it's just a daily driver, so I'm not trying to make it super fast, but 130+ whp is pretty easily atainable with very basic stuff. So if I build it right, this swap going in a 2,000 pound car I should be able to beat most stock b-series swaps in heavier cars, which will be pretty sweet.

Any of you D-series Guru's that have tips or advice feel free to post up.

Pat

Why not throw a small turbo w/ low psi? Can still be reliable and get you to ~150 whp or so if you like?

I'm keeping this all motor since it's a daily driver (it won't have anything anybody will want to steal). This is going to be more of a long term daily driver project that I am doing as cheap as possible and for fun. I also want to keep gas mileage good, with a turbo I would be too tempted to rod on it all the time. I still have other turbo car to play with and I plan on going to a built b-series turbo with that anyways. 150whp with an all motor non-vtec sohc (homemade itb's of course) would be way cooler than a small turbo kit I think.

150 whp, good luck

I still think a cheap turbo setup could be reliable, use a smic and a quiet bov... and much cheaper than 150 whp na d

Good luck regardless

Thanks. Building the motor with high comp pistons is far down the road. Oh and 150whp isn't as far of as you might think it is with this motor, search honda tech and you will find a few people making 130+ whp with just the ZC pistons and upgraded cam with your basic bolt ons. Jeff made 130whp with that and stock parts and it wasn't even tuned, if he would have had a good intake, header, and tuning he would have probably made a good amount more, then add itb's and you got 150whp. I totally agree if I was going for the best bang for my buck a cheap turbo kit would be the way to go, but that's not my goal. I want to stay all motor and do the work myself.

Basically right now I'm looking at it like this. I currently have about 60ish whp and can't stand driving it, by swapping in a stock A6 I will have about 90ish whp. I'm going to gain 50% horsepower for a few hundred bucks, not bad.

the 272 is the grind you want. It works and your not going to run into valve trains issues with it

I LOVE the A6 Wheeze so this is going to be really cool! Jeff made what, mid 130whp? I heard that the VTEC-E has an aggressive cam, but you'll probably want to buy and aftermarket one not cheap out on something that could potentially get higher whp numbers. Ha, I'm curious how this thread turns out due to everyone being pro-turbo, but I'm sure there are a few helpful all-motor wizards on board. Good luck and keep us posted. Oh and I have a feeling your hatch is gold, good guess or no?

EDIT: Link to 272 or regrind. Interested.

Yeah Jeff said his delta regrind was only $50 in that thread, so that is the route I am looking at. New stock valve springs are the way to go with the cam upgrade also from what I have seen. I have also read that exospeed and crane make good cams for the A6, but they will cost me $200 or more! Not worth it for a few extra horsepower when I am only going to be making maybe 125-135whp anyways lol. I just think it will be fun doing the swap and then rebuilding the motor since I haven't done either myself before.

My hatch is blue actually...

The shitty D15b1...

The future D16a6 power plant...
