The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
That's right, yesterday I bought a D16a6 longblock and ecu for $100 and also found a cable SI tranny for $100, the only parts I need to buy are a dizzy and plug wires. What's this going in you might ask? Well if you didn't already know I bought an 89 std hatch about 8 months ago and it came with the 70hp D15b1 and 4 speed tranny. I liked it at first because it got great gas mileage, but holy hell this thing is ------- slow as balls. I wasn't planning on doing anything to this motor since it's just a daily driver/commuter car, but I'm sick of having to shift down to 2nd gear when going up any incline. I found some good deals on a local car forum and though I'd jump on it.
What are my plans? Well I'm just going to gather all the stuff I need for the swap (not too much left really), but it probably won't go in for a few months. I already have the tranny apart and it looks like it needs new bearings and a little tlc. Then I plan on swapping the stock A6 in my car. First I want to dyno my D15b1 and see what it puts down, then dyno the stock A6 (should be fun to get a before swap, after swap, then after it's built dynos). After I get bored with the stock motor I will pull it out and slap some high comp ZC pistons and a decent cam in there, pretty much exactly what Jeff did on his A6 Wheeze build. Mine won't have to look stock, so I will be able to use an aftermarket header and intake, which means no porting for hours lol. I am going to try and do all the work myslef and also keep it as cheap as possible, since this is a daily driver and will still be slow no matter what I do haha. I have been reading up a lot on A6 budget builds lately, especially Jeff's thread, but pictures in that thread would help! I should be able to get all this done for fairly cheap though and defintely less than a complete b-series swap would have cost me. Oh and remember it's just a daily driver, so I'm not trying to make it super fast, but 130+ whp is pretty easily atainable with very basic stuff. So if I build it right, this swap going in a 2,000 pound car I should be able to beat most stock b-series swaps in heavier cars, which will be pretty sweet. Any of you D-series Guru's that have tips or advice feel free to post up. :) Pat |
Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
Why not throw a small turbo w/ low psi? Can still be reliable and get you to ~150 whp or so if you like?
|
Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
I'm keeping this all motor since it's a daily driver (it won't have anything anybody will want to steal). This is going to be more of a long term daily driver project that I am doing as cheap as possible and for fun. I also want to keep gas mileage good, with a turbo I would be too tempted to rod on it all the time. I still have other turbo car to play with and I plan on going to a built b-series turbo with that anyways. 150whp with an all motor non-vtec sohc (homemade itb's of course) would be way cooler than a small turbo kit I think. ;)
|
Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
150 whp, good luck :o
I still think a cheap turbo setup could be reliable, use a smic and a quiet bov... and much cheaper than 150 whp na d :y Good luck regardless |
Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
Thanks. Building the motor with high comp pistons is far down the road. Oh and 150whp isn't as far of as you might think it is with this motor, search honda tech and you will find a few people making 130+ whp with just the ZC pistons and upgraded cam with your basic bolt ons. Jeff made 130whp with that and stock parts and it wasn't even tuned, if he would have had a good intake, header, and tuning he would have probably made a good amount more, then add itb's and you got 150whp. I totally agree if I was going for the best bang for my buck a cheap turbo kit would be the way to go, but that's not my goal. I want to stay all motor and do the work myself.
Basically right now I'm looking at it like this. I currently have about 60ish whp and can't stand driving it, by swapping in a stock A6 I will have about 90ish whp. I'm going to gain 50% horsepower for a few hundred bucks, not bad. |

the 272 is the grind you want. It works and your not going to run into valve trains issues with it |
Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
Ive got a 272, very streetable, damn nice idle compared to some regrinds Ive seen

Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
I LOVE the A6 Wheeze so this is going to be really cool! Jeff made what, mid 130whp? I heard that the VTEC-E has an aggressive cam, but you'll probably want to buy and aftermarket one not cheap out on something that could potentially get higher whp numbers. Ha, I'm curious how this thread turns out due to everyone being pro-turbo, but I'm sure there are a few helpful all-motor wizards on board. Good luck and keep us posted. Oh and I have a feeling your hatch is gold, good guess or no?
EDIT: Link to 272 or regrind. Interested. JP |
Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
Yeah Jeff said his delta regrind was only $50 in that thread, so that is the route I am looking at. New stock valve springs are the way to go with the cam upgrade also from what I have seen. I have also read that exospeed and crane make good cams for the A6, but they will cost me $200 or more! Not worth it for a few extra horsepower when I am only going to be making maybe 125-135whp anyways lol. I just think it will be fun doing the swap and then rebuilding the motor since I haven't done either myself before.

Clean. Lifted too, that's cool.
So what's up with this regrind on the stock cams? JP |

JP Umm I dunno much about the delta regrind, but from what I have read (and what everybody else in this thread says) they work really well and you can't beat $50. Here is there website, it's a local place here in Washington... http://www.deltacam.com/ |
Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
im rockin the Delta 272 in my built a6, i like it a lot.
z6 or a Blox IM, GSR TB, ZC slugs, z6 HG, blah blah blah should make for a pretty peppy single slammer |
Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
Yeah I have a spare Z6 head, but it's kinda beat and not even complete, so I think I am just going to stay non-vtec. I can just trade that for an intake and throttle body or something. It's defintely going to be a huge improvement over my current motor lol. I will easily double my horsepower at the wheels when it's built up. Heck I will be happy when I just have the stock A6 in there, seriously this D15b1 blows.

Yeah my Uberdata map is pretty famous lol. I'm pretty excited about this build since my first car was an 88 dx hacth (picture below), but I didn't know ---- about hondas back then. Brings back a few memories... ;)

Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
i also have the shitty d15b1 in my hatch, though i did a mpfi swap because i got another hatch with a blown d16a6 in which the head dropped multiple valves, had one hell of a rod knock, and was just ready to be junked. with the swap to mpfi i found a whole new powerband with the pm6 ecu and increased lowend. i still rock the 4 speed as well since i do a lot of city driving, though i would be interested in a 5 speed(non-si since i drive a lot on he highway as well) if someone has one up for grabs close to the 48342 area we can talk about it. wasnt a bad idea to swap to mpfi. though i think my HG is on its way out i still manage to get 200-250 miles on a single tank which is quite low. now i just need a few more little odds and ends to start my turbo kit on it. which should make the car a whole new animal to drive. though i think i may suffer from the 4 speed. then again with the longer gears i may actually be better.

Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
Hey pat, there was a guy running around town in a black eg last year with a built n/a VTEC-E motor in it....i've watched him beat cars with gsr swaps and ----....can't remember what he had done to it but i do remember that thing crackin like a b-series with a cam....i've been wanting to do something like this for a while now, but with a z6 instead and throw it in a crx or hatch like yours...if you need any help with this build call me up cause i plan on doing a sohc n/a build sometime in the future and wouldn't mind getting my hands dirty so i know what i'm doing.

Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
Stock springs are fine just use what you have. Jeff thought I was joking when I said the stock sohc non vtec springs can take a beating. I love sohc non vtec d16a6 motors. Rev them the piss out of them for fun those valve springs never fail. Has far has regrinds go stay with the delta grinds and their pricing has gone up lately still much cheaper than the masses
You will want to do a valve job for sure. |

Re: The A6 Wheeze... Version 2!!! D-series Gurus's Chime In
Single cams are slow and that motor has spun rod bearings >:D
haha, just teasin...looks like you've got some work to do, good luck! Some food for thought tho, on the money you'll spend on a header, ZC pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, and all that ----, you could probably buy an hf/adapter/t3 and build yourself a decent 8-10psi kit and be 20 times faster. |

You will want to do a valve job for sure. What kinda intake throttle body and intake combo do you like for this setup? I haven't really looked into that very much yet, but I was guessing y8 or ebay intake and 60mm b-series or having my a6 tb bored out would work. The stock intake/tb will be fine for now, but I'd eventually like to upgrade. |

D15Baby8, all I'm gonna say about my E85 bitch :)
14.0:1 compression on OEM rods and pistons :) My D15B7 with crane cam did 121 whp on a mustang dyno, about 130 whp on a Dynojet, about what wheeze did. I'm looking for 145-150 whp without ITB's, I've already seen 165 whp with this cam on CBR 954's. |

Well what happened to it then? I know some mexicans stole his CRX, but didn't get far, so they slept in it lol. He got that back though, so did he just end up selling the motor? I thought I remember seeing it for sale in the classifieds, can't remember for sure.
