the 2.2 is a odd motor my friend has 2 cavys and my girlfriend has a sunfire all have 2.2s in them my friends black cavy is damn quick to be stock out ran a couple of civics, neons, jettas but his blue cavy is slow as ---- but my girl friends car even being a auto drop it in 1 and gun it it'll burn all the way up the road its tipical GM performance lol for every good engine they build they build 100 half asses ones

Re: 96 2.2 SUNFIRE TURBO HELP!!!!!!

yea the 2.2 is deffinatly odd but it pulls alright at one point i had a full out exhaust system with ram air hood and some ignition stuff and it ran pretty clean still slow but clean thats why i was interested in throwing a turbo down in it just for a side project and if i ---- up who cares you know

Re: 96 2.2 SUNFIRE TURBO HELP!!!!!!

ok first thing is first, you'll need to start reading alot. check out JBO (jbody.org) all the info is there.

stock horsepower rating is 115hp at the crank, and 130 lbft of torque at the crank.

most people wouldn't recommend running 10psi on a stock 2.2 just because it probably really can't handle it very well. there is one guy running like 10-11 on a stock 2.2 and ended up with 222whp or something around there. but its not suggested to try yourself.

also being that you have a 96 2.2 means that you have side feed injectors. which pretty much means they can't be upgraded to bigger injectors to run more boost. you'll have to figure out the fuel debate which comes down to like 3 choices.1. custom make Intake manifold with new injector bosses for top feed injectors with a controller (prolly want stand alone) 2. run auxilary injectors (injectors that fire into intake stream when there is boost) also then you'll need a controller. 3. the most unwanted idea is run stock 19lb/hr injectors with an FMU at low boost (around 4-5psi on a smaller turbo) and i doubt anyone including myself suggest that idea (becuase its dangerous and unreliable and hard to tune) you'll probably max the injectors out and cause some real damage so don't even bother thinking of this one

also to older sunbird turbo motors are actually 2.0l turbo's and absolutely nothing will fit your motor, that and i doubt you want any of that crap on there anyways. The turbo is way to small, the manifold doesn't flow worth ---- and the so called "charge piping" is like a foot of rubber i believe. no intercooler or anything worth getting

also on JBO it is a general consensous that the super 60 is one of the most efficient turbo's for this motor, which means it will gain you the most power for the efficiency. i highly suggest one of these also.

Re: 96 2.2 SUNFIRE TURBO HELP!!!!!!

another words a ---- load of work to turbo a sunfire
so if i just kept the stock injectors i would just ---- it all up or just can't run enough boost for it to be worthwhile

Re: 96 2.2 SUNFIRE TURBO HELP!!!!!!

honestly, i wouldn't let the idea cross you mind. the stock injectors are 19lb/hr which would be no where near enough for anything over 4-5psi on a smaller turbo. when you get into a smaller turbo then you get heat soak and can cook your turbo..so its a lose lose situation. if your gonna do it, do it right...4-5psi would give you like 130-150whp if that which wouldn't even be that fun.

i debated whether or not i would tell you that because of the stupidness of the idea, i threw it out there so you know its there but not worth the danger of it

Re: 96 2.2 SUNFIRE TURBO HELP!!!!!!

oh believe me i know its a stupid idea i am full aware but its my first kit im going to make from scratch so its more a learning process before i start to make something worthwhile ill probally try to turbo this learn then get a honda of somes ort or something and really build it
even with intercooler i will kill it with heat?

Re: 96 2.2 SUNFIRE TURBO HELP!!!!!!

i'd be more worried about killing your whole engine due to detonation from running to lean with no fuel. the stock injectors aren't made to handle the extra air
