you can use pringle cans too

Yea they mention it briefly, they serve a slightly different purpose though. They are more used as a very directional antenna on your computer's end, and this setup is more for boosting router output.

Re: 25 cent WIFI range extender/signal booster

Hmm, random question. I can pick up a signal on my back porch from my neighbors house (they have a hella fast connection too). Think I could make my gay little USB wireless on my desktop in my room ~40 feet from my porch pick up the signal?

Re: 25 cent WIFI range extender/signal booster

Does your wireless adapter have a connection for an antenna?

Tom-Guy 09-04-2007 10:40 PM

Re: 25 cent WIFI range extender/signal booster

Parabolic antennas are more directional than cantennas, Jon. 7 degrees, bitch.

Re: 25 cent WIFI range extender/signal booster

No, its queerball, my mom picked it up for me one day when she was out and grabbed the wrong one but I used it anyways. Guess I'm SOL then huh?

I also have this chillin outside though:
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:...ges/DS2076.JPG

Anything I could do with that if I were to get a different wireless adapter?

Maybe I could do something with that? :P

And how do I boost my neighbors signal... I got into their router settings and switched a few things around... short of overclocking it I probably cant do much? I dont want to overclock it and f' it up, then I wont have fast internets.

HMTguy 09-04-2007 10:45 PM

Re: 25 cent WIFI range extender/signal booster

Get a better adapter that has an antenna input, and buy or build one (Cantennas are very nice when you know where to point them)

Other than that, what router do they have? If it's a flashable linksys router you can install DD-WRT on it which has a setting to boost the transmit power. Stock on mine was 35 mW, and after upgrading it could be boosted to 200 mW.

Good luck installing DD-WRT on most of the WRT54G's without being physically connected to the router.

If they have linksys and are still using the default password, definitely install dd-wrt. I've read that upping the power will burn them out quicker but I guess it doesn't matter if it isn't your router...

I set up my linksys range extender for my neighbors connection last night. Even was kind enough to set up MAC address filtering so only their computers (and mine) will work, changed the default password, and now get a full strength 54mbps signal.

Isn't as cheap as aluminum foil, but I ganked it from walmart back during my klepto days and saved $90.

This is the stupid thing I have.

Can someone link me to said DD-WRT? I'll see if I can install it and see if I can't get my signal from in my house :6

Re: 25 cent WIFI range extender/signal booster

ehhhhh.... well the link is www.dd-wrt.com :1

I'm pretty sure it's only installable on linksys routers (since they operate on a linux type deal). I would try to rig up some antenna thing to that little receiver.

I know, and it directs the signal. It's well worth the sheet of paper ;)

Besides it makes it a bunny rabbit. Ridiculous captain lucky rabbit king! Wireless rabbit routers are for the youth!

Again, without physical access to the router, good luck. They drop communications thru the antenna during a flash, and the firmware is fed live from your computer. Brick brick brick.

I had mine at 110 mW for the last 6-8 months, the heat coming off the unit was pretty extreme. Further, past 85 mW the signal to noise ratio goes all to ----... I just had mine turned up because my SSID was offensive and I liked it reaching the entire apartment complex. Anyway, mine has started glitching and locking up, requires frequent reboots. Turning the power down lets the unit go longer between reboots, but the damage is done. The next unit I get with DEFINIELY get heatsinks and the case fan mod, and stuck at 85 mW max.

Belkin 54G dongle, I liked mine fine. Your ability to position it around as an aerial antenna makes it pretty nifty, and you can build the sort of antenna Jon linked to for it and it will work great. Also, that Primestar dish you linked to will also work great for pir9ing your neighbor's cable, but they might notice you aiming a dish at their house. ;)

Chances are definitely higher, but I've had success with 2/2 routers so far. I've lost signal during some flashes (ie microwaving ----) and it just said "firmware update failed" and let me try again. If they were smart building the router, they'd just cache the firmware until it was completely uploaded, then copy it over the old one. I've drank plenty of beer tonight so I'm sure the squint-eyes that coded this probably thought of the same thing, I hope.

I read an article before about them using just a router as a webserver, since you can practically install anything on them. I'm sure it ran like ass though.

Use that dish with a plain LNB from bestbuy, buy an FTA receiver, and have all the free channels you want. Friend has his set up with over 500+ channels, including all porn, local channels all over the usa, and every ppv. I have the dish but haven't got around to buying a receiver yet, and apartments want a professional installer...hard to get a directv/dishnetwork to come install your fta satellite.

Re: 25 cent WIFI range extender/signal booster

I feel like such an uber-noob. Regardless,

How can I connect such an antenna to this? I haven't tried tearing it apart yet to see how she works (surprising).

also with the satellite dish, its been there for YEARS so it wouldnt be a problem (its sorta aimed towards their house so they'd be clueless). I still have no idea how I'd attach the coax to my comp to make it work though. I could just run a comp in the basement and connect it since thats where the connection for it is regardless.

Teach me!

BTW fun ---- going into a small town. Random parking lot by a church hanging out with friends, 5 signals within range. Not bad.

Eh, I have a v5 model with all the ---- ---- piss vmware crap, requires a physical connection for the first two flashes that allow you to finally flash DD-WRT. If I spoke out of turn and mislead, I apologise, but you really do need to know wtf unit you're dealing with and some won't let you reflash them remotely. Default, IIRC, on DD-WRT build 23 sp2 micro (what I run) is the admin page is NOT available via wireless unless you enable it first via cat 5. I figure I'm 2-6 builds behind whatever is out there these days... it's just a heads up to know what youre doing before you get into it.

Then again, if you brick the neighbor's router, you can probably pick it out of their trash and reflash it for your own use, Danno. :)

I'm sure you could just build some sort of parabolic focuser thingy like they did for the wifi antenna on the video posted above. Just concentrates the signal on the antenna.

So what the hell can I do to boost the signal on the free internets I've been using? Is it DD-WRT friendly? I can log onto it, but only over wireless of course. Help me jack that there intarnet!

Its a Netgear WGR614v5

Sorry fooker, I don't know anything about netgear routers. You'll have to check www.dd-wrt.com to see if its available for netgear routers.

You try building a cheap signal booster for your networking card's antenna?
