Re:1st boost experience

ill tell you people a little story. but you may not think its as cool as i did when it happened....

i finished my turbo setup, the custom one for my dx. the purpose was the add some pep back to the old beat up dx engine. and i had driven in turbocharged cars before, but this was really my first time driving a car with a turbo added to a stock non-turbo engine.

so anyway, im with my brother, and we start up the car and everything seems ok, so we go to the freeway that runs along the outer part of this city, kinda the main road in the city. and i was driving so as to keep it out of boost until that point. and the buildup to this point was hugely intense. anyway, so im in thrid gear kinda crusing the street and i decide im gonna give this a shot. and i was being carefull not to do any damage, cause there was no tuning and i wasn't sure what the wastegate was setup (good combo eh?)
so i put it down at about 3000rpm and as soon as that loud assed turbo spool filled the cockpit, both me and my brother were just screaming hiserically.
it was an intense feeling, like you were invincable.
....and we continued to freak out when we heard boost for that first day, and just for fun, i got my bro to grab his car and drive beside me and i did a second gear boost so see how loud the turbo/bov were from the outside of the car. and dayme did he freak out when he heard it from the other lane clear as day!@

Re:1st boost experience

dude i freak out every time i feel it. my 1st time was with my integra. i had just gotten the custom install done on it and i'd tuned it a little bit, just plyed with with fuel pressure and bumped the timing back a few degrees. i pulled away from my house doing the same thing turbo-dan was doing, keeping it out of boost. well i was criusing next to this guy like right after i pulled onto the main road, and i had just shifted into second gear, he saw the TURBOXS sticker on my side window and yelled "you dont even know what TURBOXS is!!!" i looked down at my temp guage, the car had warmed up. so i smiled at him, and at about 4k rpm i floored it. the turbo spooled up and it broke the tires loose (which even surprised me!) and i took off in a flash. i actually caught him at the next light, and i asked him, "wait what did u say?? im sorry my blow off valve was too loud and i couldnt hear you?" he rolled up his window and turned off at the next side road. at that very moment i was hooked. i knew that my life was complete when i felt that turbo spooling up, i felt alive when i could just twitch my foot and hear that thing hissing from under my hood. im not makingany of this last part up, boost is a huge part of my life, and the fact that i dont have a turbocharged car right now drives me nuts. a cant wait for the day of my new turbo LS crx

Re:1st boost experience

My first REAL boost experience (knowing what boost was, and someone who intentionally added it to thier car) was in the FASTEST turbo Civic in Kansas City. He was taking me to work in it!! Total sleeper EG6..

We were crusing at 45, in 4th.. he downshifted to only 2nd, broke the wheels loose, smoked for a second, and we shot off likea bolt of lightening!

It felt like it knocked the wind out of me.

I loved it. ;D

These are some great stories!! I need to finish up my Turbo Project.... my patience is limited.

I've got it all done (except the engine management)... I should take it for a spin nontheless. Only waiting on ghettodyne.

Re:1st boost experience

my first experience was in an mg metro turbo.. a 99bhp 750kg turbocharged shopping car.. my dad had one when i was a kid, it was cool..

second i remember was in a jdm import r32 gts-t sykline.. not as fast as i thought they were

next was a ukdm subaru impreza turbo RB5 edition with 280bhp.. that was fast..

apart from other random turbo experiences, the most recent was a ride in my dads 20psi saab 9000 turbo.. shockingly fast for an old car.. accelerating hard at 120 in 4th.. but had to back off.. not bad for £400

but i'll always remember the red renault 5 gt turbo that "lived" near my school, red, louvred hood, in car adjustable boost and 15" clio 16v wheels... perfection

Re:1st boost experience

My first boost experience was in a friend of mines Supra TT.
It had 450+ hp to the wheel and did the 1/4 mile just under 12 sec.
That car was fast fore sure.
It just nailed me to the back of the seat, I couldn't move a muscle.
When he was in second and at about 60 mph he put it in 3rd and the tires just spun like crazy, there was a lot of smoke he had to take the foot of the gas to make it stop spinning.

I wish I had an IN CAR boost experience, yet I am still a boost virgin. :(

My only experience was at a shop gettin some work done on my CRX. The owner and I were talking when his friend pulled up in his imported JDM MR-2 Turbo, right hand drive, everything in Japanese the real deal. Didnt get in the car though.

I've pondered doing a custom setup in my rex, but I don't think my Insurance company would like that too much, how do you guys all get legal insurance with your boosted rexes? Or do you?? :)

My first experience with boost in my car....I laughed like a little school girl everytime I heard it spool or the BOV shoot off.
I got done with the car on a Sunday night at 1230 and had to be at work at 8am on Monday. Needless to say I drove around till like 4am.

it was the first day of 6th grade, it pulls up, I get in, and we take off, man there is nothing like a ride in a school bus to get my day started.

I can't wait until all this stuff I read actually sinks in so I can attempt my very own turbo project.

Yeah, it's amazing how slow my 1st boost experience was- we had 35 psi, an enormous intercooler and 3 inch charge pipe leading to a motor putting out about 1500 lb/ft and 450 horsepower. Felt really torquey, though. Started in second and skipped every other gear all the way to tenth.

Re:1st boost experience

My first car was a 1988 thunderbird Turbo coupe. Although it was an auto and a pretty heavy car it was a lot of fun. When it was wet out I could spin the tires up to about 50 mph and have it sideways. I knew that engine quite well sine I had to rebuild it so many times lol. I swapped for a manual from a parts car I bought from a friend and loved it, unfortunatly no BOV sound from that car but still it was tons of fun. My dad let me buy it because he thought it would be really slow with a 4 banger as he called it....faster than he thought it was though.

Right now I'm working on a pontiac sunfire GT (yeah I know it doesnt quite fit in to honda's here but this is a general forum) Either way I cant wait to finish it, its a project car and will be turbocharged this summer or over the winter whenever i get time.

blackzc 03-04-2003 02:12 AM

Re:1st boost experience

get that sunbird done..there is one in our town that is beat to hell and back but it runs low 13s ;D

airtonics 03-04-2003 08:46 AM

Re:1st boost experience

blackzc its a sunfire not a sunbird but basically the same car. They just renamed it for a different generation unlike the cavalier which kept the same name.

Either way I think the person you are referring to is on jbody.org and goes by the name scrufdog or mike from Baltimore, Md. Either way I figure I can hit low 14's to real high 13's with 8 - 10lbs of intercooled boost.

Just ordered "maxium boost" and a couple other books to learn more. Cant wait to get it and read it :)

88crxSi 03-04-2003 08:55 AM

Re:1st boost experience

89-94 = sunbird, has a 2.0L turbo version
95+ = sunfire, no turbo, 2.2 and a 2.4 HO

newer, 2003+ have a 2.2 w/ 140hp

airtonics 03-04-2003 09:56 AM

Re:1st boost experience

88crxSi,
Just a slight correction.
In 95 Jbodies (sunfire & cavalier) had the choice of the 2.2 (120 hp) and 2.3 quad 4 (150 hp)
In 96 - 02 they had the choice of the 2.2 and 2.4
In 02 you could also get the ecotec (2.4 was an option) and now is 03 you get the ecotec 2.2 140 hp.

The 2.4 HO (180 hp) was only available in the beretta gtz and some other oldsmobile cars. A W4I version (190 hp) was also available in some oldsmobile cars.

I think you can still get the 2.4 in 03 as a special option but the only advantage is on the 00 + 2.4's with manuals you can get a factory GM supercharger and keep your warranty. No such option yet with the ecotec.

Re:1st boost experience

my first boost experience (knowing what it is and how it works), was in an MR2 running 14psi supercharged. we had about 4 crx's meet up at purdue for a cruise and to kill some beer, and their friend with this MR2 showed. DAMN!!! granted, i'd had about 6 beers by the time i took the ride in it, but it was all i could do to look forward and not up through the roof in the first to gears. so that's when i decided to boost the rex.

davcivic 03-04-2003 10:38 AM

Re:1st boost experience

My first one was in my brother in law's Mx6, He was using the stock IHI Rhb5 turbo but boosting 15psi, car was running high 13's to low 14's, I only drove it to 2nd gear because I got scared bad, that was about 3 years ago, my first and only experience :'(, but looking forward to finish my car up. only thing holding me back now is the guy making my adapter plate, it's been 5 weeks, still waiting for it, bunch of excuses long story, but after that it's on.

nope, 2.2 only for 2003+
GM is calling its 2.2 Ecotec its new "world engine" its in all the little GM cars, cavalier, sunfire, saturns. etc..

airtonics 03-04-2003 12:20 PM

Re:1st boost experience

Its been debated by some that work at the gm dealerships since the option code for the 2.4 is still listed. We all doubt you can get it but it may be possible. The ecotec is the better choice anyways. With it being in all models maybe more aftermarket companys will make performance parts

and the idea of getting a 2dr Cavalier VL is MUCH better on insurance then a Z24!!

Re:1st boost experience

My first boost experiance was a little over a year ago in my friends 2000 civic. Right when we pulled out of the driveway I was like...

"WTF!?!?! learn how to ------- shift you dumbass!"

He then told me it was just the exhaust gas comng out the BOV... I was like what? I started asking more questions and it pissed me off cause he didn't have a clue how anything worked because he bought the car like that. All he could tell me is that it was a greddy. >:( So I started doing research on the internet and I have been hooked on boost ever since. :D

Re:1st boost experience

Ahhhhhh, yes. My first boost experience. I think I was about 9 and it was my friend's parents Volvo wagon. Every time I got in it, all I could do was stare at the boost gauge. I didn't know what I was looking at, or what it actualy did, but I liked it. My second experience was in an Eclipse. It came with the trubo, but it had a lot of aftermarket parts added. It was raining at the time I went for a ride so all it did was spin the tires all the way up to 135 mph on the speedo. It was pretty cool even though we weren't getting any traction.......memories......
