$2009 Grassroots Motorsports Build

Bringing it home Feb 7th

I need some thoughts on the $09 GRM car. My car is rusted to hell , but I have:

Built Z6 , Eville manifold , Vitara's , TT rods , To4 turbo , 660 cc RC's ,

Koni's (for an ef) Coilovers (GC) Sparco seat, Revo Wheels , Hoosiers, Fuel cell...ect

I found this locally

I would need an engine wiring harness / head and taillights, cluster, tranny, hood and a fender. It has front and rear bumpers , gutted doors.. Would make a real light weight street track car.

I found a pretty rust Free EF for $900 , but ---- me , $900 for an EF shell is a bit steep

Any thoughts?

$200 for this bad boy.

DO IT!!!! I love the 88-91 chassie but I think the 92-95 is a better choice for a grm car.

i want to do this someday. GRM is sponsoring a similar thing out here in so cal.
it's called the grand challenge. i was gonna do that, but before GRM became a sponsor it looked like the event wasn't gonna happen.

Re: Advice for $09 GRM car

92+ chassis are easier and roomier to work on. I prefer ED, but that's because they look like CRXs.

Re: Advice for $09 GRM car

Bought it.

goin to get it this weekend. Car is clean , original paint , underside is mint. It had a B20 in it. Even has brand new snow tires on it.

The car also has PS, something I wanted. Lots of Autocrossers (EF/EG's) are taking the 12V electric PS pump from last Gen MR2's and using them. Should be more then enough to steer the 13x9 Diamond's I just got.

I willstart a build thread in OG Soon

I can use what I have.

Just bought a CX tranny for $40 and a engine wiring harness for $50 (92-95 Vtak)

as un HMT as it is , I gotta do a wire tuck and smooth the engine bay. I never realized the level to which these guys take things.

The car will be gutted 100% as the old one was.

I am bringing it home next weekend. 1st stop is the DIY car wash with some superclean. Gonna hose down the engine bay. Then head home and start removing things and welding holes shut.

I will have this fucker on the road by april 15th.

Rust and BS wiring problems set us so far back last time. Every bolt on the old car had to be plasma'd or cut out with an angle grinder.

---- that. The kid I got the shell from put new suspension on it last year (some generic ----) , new brakes and a few other things. the underside is minty fresh. even has a new gas tank in it.

Old setup going into new car (less the tranny)

2nd place cars engine bay

Attachment 10323

Xenocron isn't too far down the road, I think the 5 or so Hr Drive will be worth it to have it tuned properly.

Re: Advice for $09 GRM car

I would give it to you.

Anyone who shows up at my house in Kingston (30 min from Watertown NY) before noon next saturday , can have it...

It's a rusty ---- pile, the wiring is fucked.. I would feel like I was ripping people off if I gave it to them for $0

Re: Advice for $09 GRM car

where's all the rust exactly?

86 fiero 02-04-2009 12:58 PM

Re: Advice for $09 GRM car

Floors are mint , 1/4's were redone , rockers and the rear suspension area where the trailing arm bolts to the body...couldn't even align it.

I like the look of the EF better then the EG, but it's too much work for me.

Plus the wiring hanress is hacked pretty bad.

Re: Advice for $09 GRM car

Wondering about the condition of the headlights, and if those are 88-89 side corner lights I NEED THEM. Also, an instrument cluster w/ a tach would be nice.

86 fiero 02-04-2009 09:08 PM

Re: Advice for $09 GRM car

the corners are rammed on from another year.

Some guy on here said he wanted the cluster, but never returns PM's. I can't ------ stand this kind of "I want it" but I am broke welfare ----.

Pm me your addy , I will send it out monday for cost of shipping.

it's in Km/h thou

took the other car to the wreckers yesterday and brought this home. 6 hrs of driving round trip..but oh so worth it

Car has new brakes, Coilovers, all the interior panels are mint (not gutting it) , Brand new snow tires on it Original paint needs just 1 of the 1/4's fixed slighty. My partner in the build's father owns a body shop

I found $6 under the carpet , Pillar pod , and a working Garmin GPS.

Next up shaving the engine bay and putting in poly..and a very un HMT wire tuck being done by a friend.

86 fiero 02-08-2009 08:50 PM

Re: $2009 Grassroots Motorsports Build

Burnt Sparco $60
Used Koni's $200

Gotta add in things like my battery box , I need a bigger rear sway bar, the car already has coilovers on it I will use on the koni's , I need tires, hood , fender (J-yard) Need some kind of T3 , I got a CX tranny for $40 (not sure if I am using it yet) I have a set of D series axles I paid $20 for, welding cable for relocating battery.

Re: $2009 Grassroots Motorsports Build

Don't use the CX trans. It'll kill you in the auto-x portion. I can refer you to some high profile people who would advise you to launch in second with the boost turned up, it's easier to launch as well.

I sold the ACT stage 2 today , still not sure about what clutch to get

already have a fidanza 7Lb flywheel.

Weld something in there. It triangulates the frame, reduces wheel hop when launching and when powering hard in the lower gears.

$1000 for that battered POS because they don't like EDs is an idiot statement. ::)

I used a $100 ebay grip-force clutch for 3 years of abuse. Great clutch. I recommend one.

I have seen some ching chong bars the bolt to the doors and the front subframe that do the same thing. I think I will just weld in a bar (1" flat steel)

I am going to weld up the front seams as well (near the door) and where the frame horns meet the firewall, engine mounts, rear shock towers, ect.

That's this weekends project.

Tom-Guy 02-09-2009 11:56 AM

Re: $2009 Grassroots Motorsports Build

I'd do a tube, and disperse the load with 90 degree angle iron.

Stitch weld the seams, yo!

86 fiero 02-09-2009 12:00 PM

Re: $2009 Grassroots Motorsports Build

I have acres of 1/2" tube.. explain what you mean thou..

I have also seen under chassis braces as well...

2 buddies are coming over this weekend with their tigs and we are going to town.

Tom-Guy 02-09-2009 12:02 PM

Re: $2009 Grassroots Motorsports Build

Flat steel is prone to flexing along it's weak side. All modern unibody frames are set up to mimick a spaceframe as best as possible, using a rigid tube is in keeping with this.

Use the 90 degree angle at both ends of the tube, the only way 90 degree angles will plate the frame. It'll make sense when you get in there.

About your clutch, if i were you i would talk to mike at lsd and tell him who you are and what you are doing, and see if he will cut you a grm2009 deal? Cant hurt to ask.
