Who gets smoke when you boots?
When i hit boost (about 7 PSI) i see puffs of smoke behind me, is this normal? I had my turbo rebuilt not long ago and i'm running a restrictor valve so i'm pretty sure its not the turbo. The smoke is oil smoke, blue and puffs all the way till i stop hitting boost, and i'm also running a catch can.

Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
hmm...i never smoke when i hit boots ::)
Have you checked your compression? |
Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
mine smoked cause my ringlands a re broken. 8)

Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
I have a little black smoke out the tailpipe under WOT and full boost but thats because I'm in the 11's AFR. I've seen factory STI's smoke out the exhaust and they are still running cats :-\ I wouldn't be to concerned with it depending on ammount, color and the reason.

Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
My car puffs black when I powershift :D But otherwise no smoke at all. Fresh re-build and 1K on the motor has a lot to do with that though ;D All motors with lots of miles on them and old rings will eventually give-in to blow-by if beaten on hard enough.

Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
Ok its my motors then. When i was N/A it would puff very little blue smoke when i beat on it, none that i could even notice just my friend behind me told me so. My compresion test showed 150 all the way across.

Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
isnt blue smoke oil?
|
Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
UHH YES! ::)
|
Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
150 eh, you did hold it at WOT right?
|
Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
NO, what difference does WOT make while i'm cranking it. I don't even think you're suppose to floor the pedal while cranking it cause it'll flood the damn engine.

Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
disable the fuel by removing the ecu fuse so you DONT spray fuel all over the place ::)
your supposed to keep cranking it at wot untill the needle stops moving |
Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
oic, well i believe its correct at 150. I think i have to be careful with boost now. >:(

Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
Take out your pcv and put it on your turbo inlet. That is the one thing air filters are good for- creating a slight vacuum on your turbo inlet. Run a big fatty hose from your former pcv down to turbo inlet. Pressure in the crankcase fucks up oil return, ring seating, turbo seal function, turbo lubrication, makes your oil cap start leaking...

your supposed to keep cranking it at wot untill the needle stops moving ill bet -100% they change. also, the car should be at full operating temp, no ecu fuse installed, WOT you didnt do the compression test correctly. |
Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
FooK's right - the entire point of a compression test is to see how much the engine compresses air when it's at TDC. However, with the throttle plate closed, all the air that's going into the engine has to get sucked past the idle air bypass orifice in the TB, creating significantly less pressure in both the intake manifold and combustion chamber. Think about what the pressure is in your intake manifold when you're idling at 600rpm with the throttle closed. Granted, cranking is only 200-300rpm, but you're still operating with a hell of a lot of vacuum in there @ 200rpm - more than enough to skew the results.
The correct way to do the test is to bring the engine up to operating temperature, disable fuel by either unplugging all your injectors, the ecu fuse, or however you want, and block the throttle open - THEN crank it over and watch the compression. |
Re: Who gets smoke when you boots?
oh, and i get lots of smoke when i boost...its just from the tires tho ;)
