Types of lubricants.

There are two choices here: synthetic based or mineral based lube.

Synthetic lubes are manufactured fluids in which the basic structure of the lub is much more ridgitdly controlled than in standard hydrocarbon oils. The resultant product is a very consisitent stable fluid with uniform molecular structure whose properties are highly predictable. Sunthetics have clearly demonstrated their capability with the respect to frictional losses, high temperature stability and basic toughness of the molecular structure. Mineral based lubes are less expensive and more likely to coke.
here's the link that explains it: it's a sticky.

I know that synthetic is better over mineral but what i'm asking is is it ok to go from a more viscous oil (15w-40) to a less thick oil (10w40 or 10w-30)?

the thinner 30w will get even thinner when the engine heats up. and with a turbo, your engine is gonna run a bit hotter cause of the higher volume of air/fuel your engine is puching. you won't realy notice your engine running at higher temps cause your cooling system is gonna work overtime to keep the temps normal. the thermostat will open
more often w/turbo and the radiator fans will turn on more often. so i would go w/thicker synthetic oil. read the link i posted above. i'm running 15w-40w mobil 1 synthetic.
if you decide to cheap out and use regular oil, go with 20-50w or 10-40w if you can't find the 20-50w oil. walmart has 20-50w regular oil in their supertech brand and it's what i use in my wifes' car cause it has 116k miles and regular oil works better in high milage cars.

to each his own, but i'll never run synthetic oil in a turbo car. cheap oil is fine as long as you change it ever 2k and don't shut the car off right after driving hard.

to each his own. i'm cool with that. i had synthetic 10w-40w in my manual tranny and i found out here the i was supposed to use regular oil 10-40w. w/synthetic the tranny synchrose don't spin at the same speed cause the synthetic oil is way more slippery than the regular oil and syntheic won't give the synchrose enough friction between each other while they're spinning therefore the next gear isn't going to be spinning at the same speed as the one the car is in. i put in regular oil and i could get into reverse with no problem and no gear grinds whatsoever along with way smoother shifting. so synthetic oil is superior when it comes to friction loss. (more slippery)

like i said earlier, it's good for the turbo, but not good for the engine, i would rather replace/rebuild my turbo than my engine you should try honda mtf for your tranny, it works wonders

theres always the huge debate on honda mtf vs 10w30.

honda guy told me straight up not to spend the cash on the MTF, just use 10w30.

i was suprised the honda guy would say this because usually there goal is to take as much money from the customer as possible

i use to use 10w30 all the time in my teg, had 200k on the tranny and was starting to get grinds, decided to try honda mtf and it was like brand new. used it ever since and can definitely tell a diff between mtf and reg 10w30, believe me, i wouldn't spend 4$ a quart as opposed to .80 a quart if i didn't feel a difference.
