well now that we are nearing the current state fo the car, i would like to say it's true.

when u think everything is going too smooth, something goes all sorts of wrong!!

that being said , the next few posts are uber depressing! :(

Re: What happens when you are never happy with you car's power ( My Turbo Build)

i am sick to my stomach right now :-X,, i want to trow up so badd!!

very dissapointing day.. :(

ok so i had a good nights sleep.. woke up early,, went to the shop..HAPPY!!! ;D

figured today was just small things, and START up!! :y

oh man was i wrong!!! :3

well here is the situation.. the block was originally a 1.8L (81mm)Acura Integra GSR block... it was Darton sleeved and bored to 84.5mm.

the block was also decked unevenly by the machineshop!!! <~~ this is where it gets depressing.
[B] so now the block is slightly shorter from the shave job... :7

that being said... this is how i was sitting pretty b4 start up!!

NOW HERE IS THE BAD NEWS.. sorry but i was soo sad and could not bring myself to take pix

* i put the basemap in the ECU..
* checked everything, and checked it again!!
* crank, STARTTT
*let it run for a bit.. and was checking out the fuel stuff (checking for leaks because im scared to death of flames, lol)
* NOTICED SOME ANTIFREEZ BY THE BLOCK. WHERE THE HEAD MEETS THE BLOCK BY THE TIMEING BELT. TURN CAR OFF..
*pulled plug #1 and looked down and  then :( green liquid ontop of the piston.

NO BUENO!! went to the store and got a 6-pac of Corona and ordered a Pizza!! drank a bit, ate a bit ( maybe it was a bad dream, maybe i was just light headed from not eating and seeing things, maybe a lot of things)

[B]still the same REALITY "THE MOTOR WAS PUSHING WATER"...called the machine shop and told them about the issue. They said it was because i ran the car hot with no coolant and it warped the head. WTF this was the first start up. They then said to take the head off and bring them the block. ( i took them the wholee motor, so they can open it, So they can't say i messed anything up while taking it off)

at this point i was planning my FOR SALE thread in my head!!

i just QUIT for the day, went home and drank a lil more, the wife gave me a few comforting words.. and here i am !![B]

Sat is my next day off, and the motor comes out, and back to the Machine shop..to see whats the REAL issue and whats the damage!!

right now my options are to try to trouble shoot the block issue.. and salvage it.

or i have another block i can sent it out to be sleeved ( at a different machine shop) and put all the internals from the first block in that one.. because it's 100% a sealing issue!!

Re: What happens when you are never happy with you car's power ( My Turbo Build)

next time you take your block to a hole in the wall machine shop, make sure theyre a good shop and what honda is

well at this point the Machine shop is telling me to bring in just teh block, so i pull the head off. Don't mind the spilt Antifreez, it was all cleaned up.

Attachment 12243
take them the block to check out,, they are telling me that everything is good on the block. ( i know the head is good , because it just came off a running motor). Anyway i take the block to a 2nd machineshop to get a 2nd opinion and they confirm that it is decked unevenly. I take this find back to the first Machineshop and they have a lot to say , but very little having to do with resolving this issue.

a slight compensation was worked out, and i took the loss, and started over.

It was nearing the end of the season anyway, and i just wanted to make it to the few remaining events. And i didn't have the time nor the funds to have another motor sleeved.

so i had another 81mm stock Sleeve motor built with pistons and rods. This time LsVtec ( becuase finding a GSR is like finding a virgin in Brazil)

Pootie 12-02-2008 10:24 PM

Re: What happens when you are never happy with you car's power ( My Turbo Build)

the plan is to at least have the car running ( if that means stock sleeves for now)

another block will be sent out to Z10 in the spring to be sleeved for the 09 season.

and here we are at the Present!!

the car was put back together last weekend with a fresh stock sleeve LsVtec with 81mm 9:1 JE pistons and Eagle big bolt rods.

well i got the intercooler pipeing in!!

mocked it up, (still missing quite a few Tbolt clamps and a few couplers..) but it looks like it's going to fit like a glovee!!

3" on the cold side, and 2.5" on the side . ALLLL Alum!

Tial 50mm BOV !!
Attachment 12238
Attachment 12239

also test fitted the 3" to 4" downpipe.. tight fit, but with a bit of cut welding it will fit perfect!!

Attachment 12240

got the front bumper back up. Sorry for the unpainted CTR grille!! that will be taken care of when the car is painted!!
Attachment 12241
Attachment 12242

PS: thats not the front bumper/lip thats going on the finished product when it gets painted ;-)

oh man so sorry to hear about that issue, back to the stock sleeves, I know chris tunes conservative, but so does jeff, here is my dyno chart from my car, its tuned very conservatively on 93 octane and only on 20 psi for the solid line, the dotted line is off wastegate spring, i daily drive it and some times drive it 3 hours one way to go race. most set ups like mine jeff often tunes to 520 or 530 safely but he stopped at just over 500 on this one to be extra safe. I once asked jeff what he felt was the limit on stock sleeves and he said low 500 on pump and 600 on race gas was as far as he liked to see them pushed, however he has seen guys go past that and not have issues.

The car is no longer a Daily Driver so i'll be taking a jug of C16 with me on this tune.

thanks man, it's still far from finished!!

i still have to cage the car,, i'll try to do that In-house early next year.. and will need a few charts with instructions and guidlines on cage points that make it NHRA Legal..
10 point cage and chute bracket. and i'll put a chute on the car once the MPH starts going up and the Officials start beefing.. ( for now i don't see a 150mph trap comming any time soon.)

Chris says if i go 10.99 on the pump gas tune ( i get a free tune )

yeah i will be getting a race gas tune this season as well, since im stock sleeves i will just be looking for around 550 or so, my set up is very straight forward, b18c1, ported gsr head, CTR cams ITR crank, ITR TB, ITR oil pump, edelbrock intake, top mount mani gt35r snunk2 spings, manley valves, ect nothing outrages or anything, the carss best ET is 10.88 and its best MPH is 133 and that was on very crappy 23 inch slicks spinning the entire track, with 24.5s it should go mid 10s and 135,i plan on getting 24.5s and some DSS axles in the spring, and i need to get a roll bar by next year so i dont get threatened to get kicked out again. its my daily driver so i am going to try and get a roll bar thats light and just barely meets the rules so it dont interfere with my interior, my 4 year olds car seat in the back and one that dont make it hard to get in and out of the car. im the only guy at my track running 10s with a baby seat in the back, full interior , stereo system, 50 ibs of dynamatt sound deadening on the entire floor front to rear, its def not no gutted wanna be race car :)

nice.. this is in a CRX right?

and what u mena a roll bar? like a bolt in bar? ( becuase that not going to cut it , and they are going to give u heck about it.. it should be welded in and for that ET/MPH even a 8 point will be cutting it..

i'm suprise there didn't give u a rootcanal for the 10.8 pass..

My friend went 10.4@140mph and they Roasted Him at Englishtown.. i mean they damn near cursed out his dead grand mother. Island is a lil more fogiving..

no my CRX is sold, this car is a EG, my home track is a little forgiving because I have been racing there for over 15 years and my family's race team rents a year round pit area, but at other tracks i get told to slow down or leave. I will be putting just enough cage in to keep them from hassling me.

Sorry off topic man. Killer car and killer wife. I wish I could afford half of what you've done to this car. It's a F-IN sweeeet setup and your future plans are wicked and I can't wait to see what future dyno graph you have on the this beast. I'm really impressed with the rebound you had after the mess your car was in after the theft. It helps inspire me to finish my build after all the mess I've had. Good luck with your future progress.

Lmaoo something like that . I work nights ( and this time of year there is a lot of down time) just no time off, so I get to spend 5-7 hours infront of a computer. So I'm up with my daughter at 10am for her to watch cartoons then I go to work from 2pm-11pm.

Thanks for the comments. I painted my Bike Sunburst Gold and had a lot of paint left over. So I painted the wheels since NO1 had them at the time and they were considered Ugly. Lol

Thanks and Thanks!!

Yea man , I spent a lott of $ over the years. But I only forked out a good amount the FIRST time ( then I sell when I upgrade and just come out of pocket about 25% of the total build and go bigger).
And doing most of the work myself helps on cost.

When my car was stolen it fucked me up man, I was going to Quit but I got the car back a month later with allllll of the parts ( just off the shell and neatly stacked in a Garage in the Bx). So I started over. I just did only what it took to get it to run , lol I didn't even fix the ignition. For 3 months I went to the track and raced with a broken ignition, I used to start the car with a Pen!

I drove the car to a best ET of 13.6@103mph All Motor. And it just wouldn't go any faster no matter how hard I drove the car.

this is a 13.8 pass ( lol notice what gear i finish the 1/4 mile in)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPRZssA78DM

So ForcedInduction was the next step and I didn't like the idea of having to fill a bottle for $60 a week!

Over time I have had 3-4 different turbo set-ups and now here I am. ( and I am still not 100% happy with this one because it's not sleeved). But I will get there.

I work a lottt and save a lotttt. I actually wanna get my car to the point where I am Happy with the power and the only $$ I'l be spending is fuel and track fee!! ( but that will never happen, one thing I have learned is that the more power u make is the more ---- u will brake). In FWD even the best product will fail eventually.

GoodLuck with your Build.
