What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

Okay, im doing my install and i keep hearing ppl talk about their oil pan and blah blah blah. Why cant i just drill the damn hole, screw in my brass fitting, and jb weld it up and then thats the end of that???

fastcivicboy 01-31-2004 04:25 PM

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

because then you wont be able to get the meatle shaving out of your oil pan that fall in.

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

few metal shavings? rofl ok do it, i wanna see your engine soon!!! lets see where is that metal going to go? turbo perhaps? i dunno lets find out, drill the oil pan and jb weld it up and drive it. :)

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

not taking the oil pan off would be stupid! take the time and do it right so you dont ---- up your motor. who cars it will take you 45 minutes to take it off and do it. i suggest doing it. but its up to you

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

45 mins??? i took mine off in like 15-20 mins.

BlinD 01-31-2004 05:05 PM

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

lol. I highly suggest doing that. Imagine that going through your turbo.. then your motor.. Not a good thing. Remember. Do things right the first time. ;D

draztik 01-31-2004 05:14 PM

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

no guys take back your posts, let him learn the hard way if he thinks its stupid to take it off. personally i'd say try it.. prove us wrong blah blah blah..

BlinD 01-31-2004 05:17 PM

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

Well there is a chance he could do it and not have terrible issues. Also has to do with how clean of a driller he is. But let me tell ya. There was allot of shards in mine once it was cut. And also if that stuff went through your turbo.. I'd expect oil blockage. Now that would suck.

fastcivicboy 01-31-2004 05:19 PM

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

for real I was scared and kinda pissed because there was like maybe 1 lillte bitty microscopic shaving I couldnt get. But hey eveyone dif. and some people are perfectionist.

BlinD 01-31-2004 05:20 PM

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

Yeah thats one of my problems. I try and be too perfect with hobbies. Then get pissed because that never works out. lol I cleaned the living hell outta that oil pan.

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

I couldn't imagine NOT taking the pan off to do it. If I did leave the pan on, I wouldn't be able to stop thinking about all of those little shavings bouncing all over the place getting stuck in all sorts of ----. Just take the oil pan off. :-\

I don't know what these people are so worried about. Don't listen to them. I just drilled the oil pan and left the shavings in there.

On an unrelated note my car smokes like a bitch now, makes funny noises and sounds like its going to explode. Also the oil lines to the turbo are completely clogged. Does anybody know why its doing this? Thanks for the help.

no way in hell are those shavings going to get to the turbo. there's a strainer on the oil pump and an oil filter between them and the turbo.

BUT, if they get past the strainer on the oil pump, they WILL seize it up. yuo don't wanna be at 6000rpm when that happens. i've seen the aftermath of it on one of our FSAE cars, when the pumps stopped and the motor was spinning 19,500 rpm. gave whole new meaning to "catastrophic engine failure."

and the pump siezed because of one tiny wire shaving that made it into the housing. i'm not a gambling man, so i wouldn't do it, but it's up to you in the end.

You need to start eating more protein and working out wig... I have told you that many times. You could also just get some air tools... I need to get me some of those.

I find it easy and effective to rinse the pan out with gasoline many times after drilling it. Helps get it really clean.

The Edelbrock kits instructions doesn't say to remove the oil pan. Sport Compact Car just drilled the side of the pan right on the car. The motor blew on the first pass but hey, what do you expect from a $3000 kit.

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

the oil pan bolt are torque to about 12 pounds, if you did not take that pan off it could get nasty, when I took my engine apart to rebuild it, I found a valve adjustment nut between the windage tray and oil pickup, and big ------- hole in the pickup sreen, luckily it did not make it through the pump. so imagine what hundreds of metal flakes can do. it can get nasty!

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

I think it's the vortech kit, that you get a punch, and tap to put the drain back hose into your pan.

1. Punch hole in oil pan
2. load flutes on tap full of grease
3. tap hole.
4. thread fitting in
5. Do an oil change to get all the little crap out.

No thank you. Even if I had to pull the motor, the pan would still come off for this part!!

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

one word.. "hacker"

is it possible to do? yes.. if you do decide to drill your pan without taking it down, put alot of grease on your bit, drill slow, and you can only use 1 bit.

I honestly would never do it, just because taking off an oil pan is pretty simple, a few 10mm nuts/bolts and its off.

Jeff

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

why does it matter to only use one bit...?

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

^^that's what I was wondering. The only thing I could come up with is the second size bit might drop an ass load of shavings since the hole is already there? ??? I dunno??? I still wouldn't do it. :-\

The more bits you use, the larger the possiblity there would be to put more shavings in the pan, Might as well make it a 1 time shot, rather than a couple. ::)

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

this is a great test listen up... Go to a pet store and get some clear fish tanks tube the same diameter and size as your oil line now, take the old oil drain line off and put this one on. Next change your oil so it's new, start your car up and get a brite flashlight. Look at the tube that drains the oil from the turbo to the oil pan, use the flashlight and check out all the little sparkles in that knew oil you just put in . those are metal shavings, or little metal particals that your engine deals with all the time. Everybody has them just some more than others. Now i dissagree on drilling the oil pan without taking it off the car, but the way you can do it and with very very minimul metal shavings is to just use a punch for the hole then take a tap a the specific size and smother it in some type of grease and use the tap slowly. HINT : go to sears and buy the magnetic tool that craftsman makes to magnetise and demagnetis screwdrivers. You can use this on taps also, if you do this none of the shavings will get in the oil pan because it will be magnetised and have grease on it... I work at a turbo shop and sometimes we do it this way and other times the oil pan is already off. It works if you do it right... Hopefully this helps somebody

Re:What the fuck is the point of taking off your oil pan???

You don't have to take the pan off nor do you have to drill.
in the Mustang (and camaro) world, the pan is a double hump design and the motor would have to be removed to remove the pan.
Plenty (and I do mean plenty) have done it per Vortech and haven't had issue the first. I've done it that way but now I use an alterate method.
I take a hardened nail and punch it through the pan. I then enlarge the hole with a 1/4" socket extension, followed by a 3/8", followed by a 1/2". I then weld a 1/2" pipe bung to the pan.
By simply "punching" the pan and widening the opening I have no shavings what so ever and a nice neat opening, all without removing the pan.
