what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
Just wondering what you guys think about this as far
as reliability goes. I mean, I know the afc hack, or a computer system would be better, but thats all out of my pricerange. I just dont want to finally get my kit together and then kill my engine an hour having boosting. I've got a d15b7, and plan on 7psi(but 5-6 to start off with, to make sure everythings running right). I duno.. any thoughts are very welcome |
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
fmu/ pump works fine on mine...5 psi for now on a d16y7
|
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
FMU's good, cheap, and reliable. The main setback is that you can't tune it.
|
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
you can tune it by limiting the amount of boost it sees(leans it out)
|
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
I have a d16 running 8 psi with the vortech fmu and under boost it runs rich. Was going to install a 255 lph but decided not to and the car runs great 3 weeks of boost now.

Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
hmm, sounds good!
|
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
wow so you haven't even needed the upgraded fuel pump? That is nice.
|
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
dang is that a good idea? i was told that with a turbo setup you HAVE to upgrade the oil pump to a 255 at least...
you've only been running it for 3 weeks so lemme know if anything happens... is there anyone else who has ran a turbo setup without upgrading the fuel pump? |
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
i just added an inline, no problems yet...boostin about a month now
|
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
yeah im running at tdo5h at 8psi on a d15b7 with fmu, its been great for 2 and a half weeks now
|
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
so wait you did add an inline pump or no?
|
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
Hmmm, anyone else have any commonts on this setup?
positive or negative? i'm still not sure |
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
I started off with your setup as my main option being that i have limited funds at the time. I now thikn that SMC+ and 450's and an intank pump is a better route. This way you get some of the tunning campabilities without the high cost and you dont have to worry about a FMU putting too much pressure on your fuel system and being hard to tune. A SMC plus cost like 115 new which is about the cost of an FMU and DSM's are under 100.
http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~ecg/smc.htm oh and read the "SMC help"post under engine management. |
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
woah,
I havent considered this smc+ before, I thought the safc was the only option for cheap tuneability. and even that is too much cash(2-300 for just the safc) Hmm, i'm definetely considering this, thanks! |
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
when I had a turbo teg I really liked the way it ran with the fmu (drag kit /w 12:1 vortech and stock injectors)... to mean it seemed to run very smooth (although rich), when I upgraded my injectors the car never ran as smooth, but I made great power (that was before the smc, or hack... I just used 370 injectors, an 8:1 and an afc)
a high flow fuel pump is a must though.. you will be really mad if yu smoke a motor to save yourself $100 |
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
i dont think the fuel pup has to be 255 lph, the vortech supercharger for my car comes with a 155 lph fuel pump, you only need a 255 for like a supercharged mustang gt

Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
Actually I think the 12:1 on the FMU means that it increases fuel pressure by 12 per puind of boost which would be 7* 12 =84 and if stock is 32 then that puts you at 116 ..opps my bad 120 is right i was thinking 84 total not extra.

Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
I am am thinking of a very similar setup on my D15B7 budget setup... any of you guys using intercoolers? should I just go with a SMIC? Is one of those big custom Tyrus IC's a bit too much for 7 psi?
|
Re:what do you think about the FMU+pump setup?
hey, one thing I know,
if you can afford a great ic, get it. I got a cool rx7 one, from a 3rd gen rx7, I like it cuz I used to have one of those cars, so its like a keepsake, hehe. but yeah, better intercooler = colder air = more reliability = good for our little motors :) |
