Default what causes in/out play

Just curious what cause the in/out play on turbos? I picked up a dsm t25 for basically pennies and has some in/out play but being cheesy I'm not really in the mood to buy a complete rebuild kit and just want to clear up the play. Up and down is fine.

bearings, if it has axial (in/out) play, it needs to be rebuilt.

It could be caused by a number of things, most likely your compressor seal... but it's not something you can just tighten up without a rebuild, it's probably worn out.

If there is only a little bit of in-and-out play with not much side-to-side and it's not leaking oil, I say just put it on the car. As long as it's not leaking oil and the compressor and turbine wheels aren't making contact with the housings, then it should build boost.
