Well wtf (*new ?*)
So after building my motor my self it has turned out great only 1 cel from the knock sensor that i broke. It would also buck under partial throttal but a manual advance in timing fixed that ( IM na for now) . So now that i have 250 mi on my motor i decide its time to give it more frequent beatings and my ------- headgasket starts to leaks oil!!!!!!!! theres oil going down my tranny and across my exhaust manifold to the other side of my block i have a cometic 030 mls head gasket w/arp's has anyone else had this problem if so is there a quick fix? What are you other hmters using for head gaskets? The shop pulled my dowl pins out so they could rerface could this be the reason it leaks?

Re: Well wtf
Did they put the dowel pins back in? If not, that's your problem.

Re: Well wtf
no i put them back in the only thing is i dont know if i may have put them in the wrong way eventho i thought they just slip in either way

Re: Well wtf
Yea i was told that today to use a stock hg with copper spray. i toruqe my arps to 65 like it says to but the kid also told me to go around 90 What do you guys torque your arp's to
|
Re: Well wtf
my motor sees 10psi with arp's (i think i did +10ft'lbs over stock recommended) and a $40 fel pro mls didnt even resurface anything no leaks
|
Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
yea mine are right at stock torque b/c arp says 70lbs but then it has a caption that with aluminum motors go 65 but il will see tomarrow im going 85
|
Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
ARP reccommends those torque specs for a reason...
The only thing I might do is add The error percentage of the torque wrench to the spec just to ensure it is on the tighter side rather than the looser side, but 85lb-ft over a spec of 65lb-ft? that's a little excessive. Remeber metal expands when it gets hot. just my $.02 |
Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
I forget what the exact numbers are, but the torque specs are slightly higher if you are using motor oil rather than the ARP supplied moly lube.

Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
Just double check everything that can leak oil like the distributor, vtect selnoid, cam cap. Whatever you may have. I thought my headgasket was leaking oil as well and me being a dumbass I replaced my headgasket and it still leaked, it turned out to be my distributor seal. My motor leaked the exact same way yours is.

Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
thats what i was thinking but would that leave a seam aross the enter front of my motor on the mani and it dripping down my tranny and on the edge near my timing belt

They were ------- with me :l

Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
One of my friend's is having a similar HG problem with his freshly rebuilt b17. It has no miles on it yet at all, but he says it's leaking oil from the hg and he's overheating pretty bad and has massive amounts of air coming through the cooling system. He also had the deck and head shaved, but is using the stock headbolts. Only thing I can come up with is the dowel pins...if the block/head is decked, the dowel pins need to be turned down the amount that was shaved+the lower c/r hg. Ask the machinist whether or not they turned down the dowel pins.

Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
i put a new seal in my dist and sprayed the motor off i had it idle for about 1 hour and no new oil yet
|
Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
oil likes to travel from cooler areas to hotter areas of the engine. I thought for sure my hg was leaking oil, but it turned out to be the vtec solenoid gasket. I would check those before you go for the hg.

Second: They pulled the dowl allignment pins so they could surface the deck. Gotcha. Are they missing or do you suspect that they're too long? Third: Is your machine shop worth a darn? MLS head gaskets require an R50 surface or better. Otherwise they won't seal very well. |
Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
they are prolly to long i put the motor togeather my self i didint know i would have to trim them now that i replace the dist oring the oil is not as bad i can see there is a small leak from the back of my vcg but im not sure if that would do it ill try to post pics tom

Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
Trim the dowel pins when you have either the head or block decked.
They can stick up a little too high and cause the HG to not seat all the way at the corners when compressed. |
Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
i had the same problem on my gsr when I had the head milled
|
Re: Well wtf (*new ?*)
no longer leaking oil it was my dizzy but now for some reason When i shift at high rpms ( Racing) my car sparks anyone know wtf this could be
