Wategate problem with my new turbo
I bought a brand new .48/.60 T3 for a thunderbird. I was planning on keeping the internal wastegate but now that I receive the turbo it looks like I'm gonna have to go external... which means the HF mani and adaptor plate I bought were all for nothing. Anyways take a look and see if there's anything else I can do.
I thought this was a regular internal wastegate, but I realized that the flapper was in the exhaust housing, not the turbo itself. Here's a pic of the exhaust side w/o the housing on:
Here's a pic of the exhaust housing with the wastegate flapper attached:
Now realize that there is no way I can use the stock exhaust housing because it would point directly into my block, like so:
My question is, is there any way to get this internal wastegate to work, or will I have to get a new manifold and external wastegate?

Re: Wategate problem with my new turbo
Ok, you are offering me a bit of hope, thanks Jeff.
If I cut the exhaust housing in half the opening will be oval, not circular at all. I'm guessing that I can maybe crush a pipe to somewhat match the shape. Will my cheap *** flux core welder be able to weld this cast exhaust housing to a mild steel pipe, or is this something I should have an exhaust shop do?

I wouldnt suggest a little flux core machine for that, you need a pretty decent welder to make some penitration on that cast. (especially if you want it to last) making the 2.5in pipe fit inside the oval is really easy. I wish I had some better pics of exhaust housings chopped. We do it just about everytime we do HF/Mani setups. Cadracer was rolling the same turbo and we chopped his o2 housing and welded on a nice clean 3in pipe off the housing. No worries man, its reliable, just have the guy lay the mother of all god fatty beads (garrison style) and she'll hold up just fine.

Re: Wategate problem with my new turbo
So Jeff you say I should use a 3" pipe crushed for this ex. housing, or 2.5"? I'll crush the pipe, drill a hole in it, take it to the exhaust shop, have them weld it to the housing, have them weld in my wideband O2 bung, and call it a day. Any idea what an average job like this would cost?

Average price would be 25-35 dollars I'd guess?

Wow, I just got my first "Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days." warning, awesome
I just pulled up this thread, figured I might as well finish it off. Pics of the completed downpipe from months ago:
Details on making this gangsta downpipe in this thread:
