Re: wastegate question and whats that called turbo question
1) You need some intercooler piping, and an adapter for that flange you've got there. I would check eBay. It is reffered to as a charge pipe (factory), or you can just make a coupler and hook up some pipes.
2) No that is pretty damn ghetto. Someone bypassed the entire flange idea and just welded a pipe to the outlet (very sketchy). You will need an external wastegate for this; no way to use the internal one now. I would reccomend getting a new turbine housing if you decide to actually use that. If you do use that how it is, the internal gate will vent exhaust gas to atmosphere (LOUD). If you decided to use an external wastegate, be sure to weld that down.

1)Sometimes it's called the Compressor outlet flange/adapter.
2)You can use it with the flapper exposed. The exhaust will just vent to engine bay when it opens.

Re: wastegate question and whats that called turbo question
If you do decide to keep that tiny thing. The compressor outlet flange your looking for is called a J-pipe. They are all over ebay for like $10. As long as your using a stock d series you probably wont hate that turbo, other than the wastegate problem, your just going to have early spool and some top end drop off.

well for now just going on a d16y7. i was just trying to get the feel for it before i spend alot of money. something that will spool and just be fun to drive around for the time being. i bought it off of HT and it was really cheap. i just want to fab up a turbo kit and see what im messing with for myself. but i might look into another turbo if this one might be a problem.
