wastegate dumping all times
my buddies car is running a d16y7 with a t3/t4 .57 trim and a 35mm wastegate... now he has a direct line from the turbo inlet to the wastegate BOTTOM fitting.
whats happening is, at idle you can hear the dumptube dumping exhaust, and even worse while driving does he have something hooked up wrong? you cant even hear the turbo spool anymore, what we finally did was block off the dumptube with some tin off a pop can and finally am able to hear the BOV, never before have heard it any ideas? any questions? |
Re: wastegate dumping all times
By turbo inlet, do you mean the filter side?

Re: wastegate dumping all times
did he put the fire ring in?
|
Re: wastegate dumping all times
Is there a spring in it? Is the spring fucked?
|
Re: wastegate dumping all times
fire ring is in and i took the thing apart last fall before the car was put away and everything looked fine, the diaphram had no holes in it, and the spring seemed fine but i dunno how to test that

Re: wastegate dumping all times
also where the WG is connected to, is on the compressor housing right after the charge piping coupler
|
Re: wastegate dumping all times
Try running the vac line from the wastegate to your intake manifold. I have always had better results that way. also maybe the vac line is cracked or small rip somewhere. Oh hey i never got that payment for the muffler your still interested??
|
Re: wastegate dumping all times
running the vac line to the intake, or turbo outlet, or charge pipe, or even leaving it complete disconnected won't matter for your problem, something is not together right otherwise with the wastegate. Take it off and see why it is not closing completely.
You said you can't hear the turbo spool 'anymore' and you took the wastegate apart last fall. Sounds like it didn't go back together properly. |
Re: wastegate dumping all times
i could never hear the turbo spool to begin with.. once i put the tin between the WG and the dumptube it was finally spooling til i took the tin back out... and something was messed up before i took the WG apart, its still doing the same problem that it did before, i mean i couldve put it back together wrong but it seemed pretty straight forward?
make sure the diaphram isnt pinched, make sure the spring is lined up fine, and tighten the allen heads in cross pattern |
Re: wastegate dumping all times
Seems logical to pull it off and check it again man.

Re: wastegate dumping all times
Pull the boost ref, go for a spin, see if it makes boost.
|
Re: wastegate dumping all times
the boost what??
|
Re: wastegate dumping all times
The boost reference line. The line that comes from the intake manifold or the turbo, and connects to the wastegate which tells the wastegate when to open and allow the excess drive pressure to escape around the turbine. Understand?
|
Re: wastegate dumping all times
oh ya, ive just always called it the line that goes from the turbo to wastegate, lol
im sure i could try that, its under a few inches of snow under a tarp so i have to wait, i just wanted to see if hes going to need a new wastegate or not now |
Re: wastegate dumping all times
Just be careful when you pull that line. If you ever had any kind of wastegate action and its not broken you sure wont have any now. If it gets into boost itll keep going till the engine blows.

Re: wastegate dumping all times
probly forgot the fire ring. i did that when i put on my first external wastegate.. sounded like i was open manifold and didnt build much boost at all

If you would read, you would see that its already been asked..... :1 |
just thought id let you all know i figured it out
i took it apart again, everything looked fine so i put it all back together again and sat and played with it for a while finally i pushed up on the bottom of the valve and there was just enough play to let air get by the valve past the fire ring i took the top off again and tried to mess with the set screws on that cap that goes onto the top of the valve but they had a bunch of locktite on them so i couldnt get them loose. i drilled them out and then drilled a hole as close to the top of the valve stem as possible, installed the valve back into the WG, put a long cotter pin through two of the set screw holes and put it all back together when i put the fire ring back on there was finally a little bit of it sticking past the flange, so i knew when i installed it, it would push up on the valve, sealing it so it was nice out the last couple days and snow melted so i got the car out, installed the waste gate, and WALLA! BOOST! needless to say i was pretty excited |
