Update on my Boosted I6

Hello everyone. Ive been lurking the forums for a few days and decided to join. My name is Shawn im currently building a 250ci Inline 6 for my 72 Nova.....

http://www.odiesgarage.com/misc/novasig.jpg

Its going to run a 500cfm 2bbl Holley Blow Through setup with a Buick T-Type Turbo. The motor is completely stock 70,000 miles with an aftermarket intake and the Holley Carb. Once the turbo kit is up and running on this motor I will be building a stronger one to hold more boost but to start were going to limit ourselves to about 6psi. The motor is fired off by a MSD Digital 6 Box and backed with a Build 200-r4 Overdrive Tranny and a 10 bolt 3.70posi.

http://www.odiesgarage.com/Blog/Nova/250_032.jpg

I plan to be on here quite a bit coming up looking for answers to questions and updating the progress on this setup. Seeing as this is my 1st Turbo setup I have much to learn and thank you all in advance for what you have already compiled and questions you might answer for me in the near future. :D

Here is a few pics of the oil drain we installed. -8AN XFR Bulkhead fitting and a cap to close it off until needed.

http://www.odiesgarage.com/Blog/Nova/250_040.jpg
http://www.odiesgarage.com/Blog/Nova/250_040.jpg

Also FYI the balancer on the motor is a standard SBC V-8 Balancer grooved to accept the belt. The stock balancers are a shitty 2 piece with an outer pully ring that is prone to falling off. Trust me I know. I had a buddy mill me up this balancer to run. Also helps keep the vibrations down.

Here is my modified Holley FPR. Tapped for a vac hose and original vent sealed. Will respond just like the $100 FPR's.

Very cool; but paint that door so that it matches. It's a classic! :)

What are the goals for this first engine, just to get the feel of boost?

And what of the second?

ok quick question how does a turbo + carb work, arent there floaters and ---- and alot of different air pockets in a carb, so it wouldnt run right with a carb right.

i say convert to megasquirt. and let it control everything.

Re: New Member, 1st Turbo Setup

there are carbs that are meant for blow through setups. you can also make any carb work with turbos. i am far from a carb expert but i have done quite a bit of reading on it when i was going to turbo my 600 sportbike

pressure into carb needs to keep 4-7psi (on average) above intake. vacuum doesn't need LESS fuel pressure, but pressure needs more to flow properly. most floats can be filled with something if you can't find aftermarket nitrophyl float, but i wouldn't trust ------ rigging floats. as long as the fuel level stays the same inside the carb you're fine (think of a toilet tank valve)

http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/e...5_demon2_z.jpg

look at images. explains carbs in a nutshell. holleys, aisins, etc, all have a float vent deal setup for whatever the ---- reason is, and boost hasn't effected this (technically it will boost into the float increasing fuel pressure, but rarely does)

Yes Just that to get the feel for boost, learn the tuning ect... which is why were going low boost on a stock motor.

And what of the second?
Not looking to make tons of power, I just pulled a 450rwhp V8 out of the thing :S Plans on the motor are to Stud the head, mild cam, forged pistons, ARP Rod bolts, and just a fresh rebuild. Set it up to hold 10-12psi. The car used to be a Street/Strip car with drag suspension and slicks, skinnys, ect... but we jus want to drive it now so a boosted 6 will stand out and still make some power.

Carb will work fine with solid floats and making sure its sealed up, you just boost reference the FPR and your good. Ive though about megasquirt setup in the future but I have cabrs galore that are ready to go so no need to spend extra $$ on a FI setup just now. Ive tuned holleys all my life so this is just 1 more.

Ive alredy got 250 Emblems to replace the 350 emblems on the side of the car. Although running it though my single 3in flowmaster setup might give something away...

this is a pretty cool project. Not really sure how fast is gonna be on 6psi but its different. What are your power goals?

its making like 115hp stock. (good motors still) amc 232's made 140, dodge slantways 6 made 85 (garbage motor), ford 300's made around 115 but with more torque than any other pre 5000cc engine of the era. international takes the cake though, with their 8500cc inline 6, putting out somethin around 300hp and almost 600ft lbs of torque? i dont remember, ill have to look in my motor truck books to see what it was exactly

you should have no problems with boosting that O0

ChevyIIMan 11-26-2006 04:37 PM

Re: New Member, 1st Turbo Setup

They actually make 130-150hp Stock, and considering the intake and larger carb to kill the intake restrictions. Your right @ 6 Im not expecting much but then again this is a 70,000 mile stock motor well start with 6 and go from there if she like it at 6 well go higher the turbo i have should have no problems feeding it. These engine are notorious for letting rod bolts go under boost or Nitrous. The 250 with a mild cam and 8-10psi and the stock cast exhaust mani, is easily capable of 300+hp, the larger 292s built right on 16-20 psi are in the 700hp range and I have personally ridden in a 1200hp 292 Straight 6 :) Draw Through and Carburated :S

Well i dont have the equiptment to weld aluminum to steel and I sure as hell wasnt going to chance just tightining it down and hope it never vibrated loose. I wrenched it on as tight as possible but you know you can never be to safe.

And once its painted black like the pan youll never see the damn thing

It's nice to see somthing different every now and then. Sure a 1200hp turbo V8 is cool, but so is a 300hp turbo inline 6. Did a cross flow head ever come into play?

Wicked cool project. I had a 67 chevy II, a 69 nova and a 70 nova. All of them had the straight 6. Could not kill those things. The 250 is nicer than the 230

Its in the car should be up and running N/A shortly. Waiting on a longer TV cable and a few odds and ends. Also waiting to pick up the larger "truck" exhaust manifold.
