Turboing a Tercel

Hello,
I'm crazy enough to turbo my '92 tercel. I've done all my research and looked through all of the projects on this site. The problem is that the 3EE engine in the tercel is fairly crappy and can only take 6~7psi of boost. I'm planning on running 5~6, how do I modify the wastegate to release earlier than when it was designed? I picked up a TD05 which I believe has 8-10psi stock...

o good god.
another "how do i lower boost" topic

length the actuator rod.

also. just give it 15psi and see what happens.

A friend had a Tercel. It shot a rod through the block (dont ask.... ;D ) and all I could think when I saw it was, wow, these are the size of a pencil. Smaller than a d-series even.....

Good luck on your project,
Dont get too boost happy...... ;)

Other than my 'spare 86 accord' I also had a spare 92 Tercel I drove around. It would do good burnouts because of the little tires :)

Turbo would be funny in a tercel. Would be fast too.

In the june 2001 issue of Import Tuner there is a chick with a turboed Tercel in it.
Looks very nice though and it's an automatic (chicks).
They used a Mitsu TD05-14B turbo and they say it runs un 11 psi of boost and she got a single shot of ZEX on it to...that bitch is crazy....the motor has to be rebuild though to take that much, cause they are really weak.

She had a 5EFE, an engine that is far superior to mine. This engine I have is so bad even the whole tercel community looks down upon it... ???

I think you have a slightly misguided view in the difference between "fast" and "faster than it was before".

We put a ZEX kit on my buddy's bone stock, lucky to be fuel injected 86? 89? Golf, and oh yes, it was a lot "faster than it was before", but it still posted a 15.7 as opposed to it's 17.3. So it was definately not "fast". ;D

You know, Toyota has solved your problem already. Just import and drop in a 4E-FTE. Or better yet, Use the head and turbo setup on a 5E bottom end. But then again, just dropping in the 4E-FTE would surpass both of your current HP and torque figures.

Re:Turboing a Tercel

ok, so it will be faster.

If money was not an issue I would've done that a long time ago. The thing is a 4efte costs $1750 USD (2800 CDN), I can turbo my 3E for 400CDN. With the knowledge I gain from this I will be able to use it for future engines/cars.

yeah the Christmas tercel caught fire and burned as a result of trying to keep up with some BMWs on a road trip. very cool car, nonetheless

Re:Turboing a Tercel

lowering the wastegate pressure is pretty easy. lots of ghetto ways of doing it. I personally like just taking the wastegate actuator off, and putting a small carb spring around the wastegate flapper, (then holding a light amount of tension with the spring) this way when the car makes boost the flap is forced open, The spring regulates the ammount. the more tension, the more boost, it works good for real low boost apps. You can dial it in anywhere from 0-8psi on just about any internally gated turbo.

good luck with your tercel!

Jeff

HOW MUCH?!??!! Geez, when My bro and I went to get his 4A-GZE, I we were shown one for like $800! Canadian! Granted, there was no ECU, and a cut harness, but still....

$800 I would consider.... where from?

Shine Used Japanese Auto Parts in Toronto...

This was like a couple of years ago, but between the first time we checked the place out, to when we actually went to get an engine, (more than half a year), the guy was good on a quote for $1000 for the GZE. He had a couple left when we picked up our engine. In fact they were there during our first trip.

Given the market for E series engines, I wouldn't doubt that they're still there.

ive been considering selling the crx and getting a tercel to build i hear they can make gobs of power and the stock bottum end. ;D

Beau

ps good luck with your project like jeff said the spring is the best way for very low boost levels

Re:Turboing a Tercel

I'd trade a tercel for a crx any day.. heh... (seriously)

The stock tercel engines are rather weak, it's the 4efte jdm starlet engine that can take 250+ hp on stock internals.

Skip the Tercel, it's all about the Corolla :)

That has got to be one of the smallest fmic I have ever seen. But it does look clean and props to the owner on turboing a corolla. Nice cutout too. But that cop corolla is dope, stealth mode.
Now that's a legal street racer. :P

Thanks for the words. I just sold the turbo kit. I had a best time of 14.4@102 mph 3-speed automatic. Serious traction issues, 13 psi stock internals. Put a hole through the block from a snapped rod at 15 psi, but she pulled hard for about 10 seconds...

hey zoogle, they have asked us to drop the pics in our tag lines for banwidth reasons :) tryin' to keep the forum up without going to a bigger server ($$$$$). check out the Avatar thread in General.

sorry to bud in but,Do u lengthin or shortin the wastegate rod??I did a search and mixed answers came up.Im guessing lengthin ,can u test how psi the wastegate is by using a hand held vac pump??

TJMX:
TercelOnline is a great site but..... the moment you say ANYTHING about upgrading the 3EE engine you got bombarded with "Don't do that! Get a 4efte instead!"

Kaneda13:
I take up no more bandwidth than anyone else since I host my signature pic ON MY OWN server.

boost_junky:
http://zoogle.zapto.org/wastegate.jpg
Less boost = longer actuator
More boost = shorter actuator

thanks for the pic made things alot clearer.
Also i saw exactly the same setup on a turbo at local turbo dealer,And he told me that i couldnt lower boost unless i got a external wastegate !!Why is every1 out there trying to rip ppl off??

Hello, Sam. What's this I hear about you getting a Civic? Or I guess 1.6EL from your username... I was rather counting on you getting a 240SX too...
