Turboing with a Carb?

Hey guys, its my first time on here so plz dont be to harsh if I sound like a n00B.
Ive read through your forum and found some great info but I didnt see anything about turboing with a carb. I would be interseted in puttin a turbo on my 1980 datsun pickup. It has a carb not fuel injection. I read somewhere that you have to get different jets...? Or possibly built a air tight box to suround the carb so the pressure is isolated... I have no idea what thats suppost to mean or do...

Any Ideas on what would need to be changed before adding bost.

Thanks boys.

Do a blow-through set up. Pick up a copy of Maximum Boost by Corky Bell for more detailed info. Most people here have EFI so the set up is totally different but still the same principle applies. Post pics of your project

Hey, sounds good.
Thanks for the tip, yah Ive herd talk of a "blow through set up" but Im not exactly sure what that intails, never the less Im sure it will be explained in that book you speak of. I will pick that up.

Ive spend all summer swaping engine in my truck after blowing it up the last day of grade 11 in the highschool parking lot. I still have broke engine in my shop and I plan on rebuilding it for a turbo set up if I can mannage to peice one other. I swaped in a replacment L20b engine and It seems to run strong even tho I havnt got it tuned up yet.

Heres a link to the video of my burnout that fried my first engine (you may have to copy and paste it into the address bar)

Yah tell that to my buddy, I burn off 500$ worth of tires and blow my engine that takes me 3 months and thousands of dollars to replace and he cant even get a good video of it... Thanks man!

I have some better videos of my 1969 Firebird we built last winter, We raced it this summer, my best time was 11.96@111mph in Edmonton Alberta. Whoooohoooooo! Ill try and get videos of that if anyones intersted.

Do a search for the sbc turboed blow through setup.
Its easy to do an the carbs easy to modify also.If you got questions let me know i am sure i can answer them.

Re: Turboing with a Carb?

I emailed a datsun performance shop in Californa with regards to replacing my carubrated system with a fuel injected one.
"We offer a complete dual sidedraft throttle body injection kit with various engine managment options that ranges from $2700-$3900 depeending on options."
ummm yah so Im gonig to do some more research on how to make a carb work lol.
I fugre I could make a full turbo system and replace my intake and carburator (if needed) and finish off most the other things of my truck for 3900$ lol so F - U Fuel injection.

Just wanted to keep you guys posted.

PS With regards to making a carb work under boost you either have to rejet and epoxy something in the carb. Or build an air tight box to put the carb in... Ill do more research lol

Re: Turboing with a Carb?

:) well is about a 2hour modification to a holley 650 dp an if you install a proform center body then theres no epoxy needed. The only thing your epoxing is the choke rod hole.
So get a intake manifold that has a carb on it an get a holley flange 2 in adapter an have it welded to the manifold. Then bolt on the carb an go.
I bet i can get one mocked up easily an i know a guy that welds aluminum an can get the job done.
