turbo smoking like a train
 

i have an IHI RHB5 turbo that i just put on my 95 dohc neon. it was very clean when i got it, had very little shaft play, supposedly has pretty low milage on it, and i even put a rebuild kit in it. i've been having problems with smoke out my tailpipe. i have an oil pressure gauge and needle valve running the oil feed to the turbo. when i turn the oil pressure to the turbo to almost nothing the smoke from the tailpipe disappears, however i don't want to drop the pressure that much when i'm driving it. so i'm wondering why its burning oil so much. would it be doing it because the oil is running through the turbo upwards? that's about the only thing left i can think of. the inlet is on the bottom and return comes out the top. the return from the top goes down to the oil pan. i know that's messed up, but is there a way to spin the middle section to reverse the oil lines??? any help appreciated

the oil drain works on gravity.. it needs to be on the bottom and the feed from the top

---- even i know that looks fucked up!!! spin that bitch around and make it straight!! I think thats the reason all turbos come with the return on the bottom side and inlet on top.. ::) there's your problem!!

Like said above man you cannto do that...I woudlnt drive that thing out of the driveway like that let alone go anywhere with it.

Get that fixed asap....otherwise you will be buying another turbo if you dont have to already

haha, thanks i think i got my answer! i just installed it the way i got it, so the person i got it from was either running it the same way or he rotated it before he sent it to me for some reason. hope i didn't ---- up the new seals yet!
