turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

So my dad is letting me have his CRX HF. I was originally going to put a jdm d15 or a z6 in it, but I've been reading these forums a lot lately and now I'm itching to turbo it. I want to do it on the CHEEEAP (like 750), and was thinking about turboing the stock HF motor (d15b7). Once I get a working turbo setup, swap in a zc or si tranny/good clutch and have some fun. I'm not looking to post monster numbers, but I'm ready to put a hmt setup together and learn a little.

Before I turbo this car, I'm going to do compression/leakdown test to see if the engine is healthy enough for FI. If the numbers are too shitty, I can swap in a good motor instead of boosting.

Since I'm going uber low budget, I'm going to go to ebay for pretty much everything but the turbo/adapter plate for hf manifold.

Sound like a good/cheap/fun project, or a waste of time?

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

Boost it, find a D16A6 and swap it in when your ---- blows. ;)

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

glad you two agree with me. I was also thinking that a short-geared tranny would make more of a difference than going from the d15b7 to the a6 would. As long as i don't get horrible comp/leakdown numbers, turbo it is!

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

boost it, you can easily do it for 750

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

boost the 62 hp motor and make 80 hp

Those 8 valve heads are hot

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

thanks for the support! I guess I should also get drag radials to handle the massive power.

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

You dont need drag radials

Your clutch is probably going to be ther first thing to go, Id budget that in, throw a stage 2 in there from gripforce on ebay and youre set for $140

Boost it forsure, but dont expect much

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

My mom has a 90 model, and I want that car so bad it's not funny...It's really clean, I think it has like 170k miles...She makes good money and I'm always trying to talk her into gettin' a hot new ride, but she loves her rex. Hell, as good as it runs and with gas prices being what they are, I can't really blame her...I would definitely swap the car to multi-point injection, but other than that, hell you don't even have to fab up or buy a manifold...

maireeka 05-13-2007 09:32 PM

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

I was joking about the drag radials, I'm expecting very little. I just want to turbo something, and this is what I got. If i put in a new clutch, the HF tranny is gone though. The gears in that tranny are long as hell.

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

Nothing wrong with long gears

Your oem clutch wont last long if a single pass at all with 6+psi, might as well spend the very little money and upgrade it to a better NEW unit

Good idea to turbo the car though, do it for cheap

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

I'd recommend swap everything to D16A6 then turbo. ;)

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

---- it, blow it up first, might aswell for your first kit

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

yeah I figure everything will transfer over to a new motor, I've pulled and dropped d series motors before so it's no big deal. I'd just keep it simple with an odb0 motor, cable trans swap. this hf motor seems really strong for what it is though, wonder how it will react to some boost. Any recommendations for a turbo to use on this thing? Nothing too big I imagine, like a t28 or something?

Airsresearch t3 .42/.48, under $200 Perfect

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

Swap first, don't wate your time on that shitty HF motor. You can get a D16a6 and SI tranny for a few hundred bucks. Go turbo after that.

Guy-Fast 05-14-2007 04:39 AM

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

20 bucks you dont even own a car

maireeka 05-14-2007 09:35 AM

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

so do i get 20 bucks when i post pics of it?

I'm thinkin you are probably right about the hf motor being a waste of time, haven't driven the hf in a while and I took her for a spin today. It's got even less balls than I remember. (car was mine a couple years ago, sold to dad, he gave back after getting back from Iraq.)

here's a couple pics:

I say turbo it the way it is. What do you have to loose? If it blow's up, oh well. Then worry about swapping.

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?

The car is a 91 hf, and yes it DOES have multi-point.

my bad on the engine code, I had to look it up just to put it in the post haha. I've always just called it an hf motor.

I'm about done doing preventative maint on my dd, so I'm about to focus on the jefe. (what me and dad call it)

DOHCD15 05-15-2007 02:13 AM

Re: turbo my stock CRX HF - stupid or a good project?
