Turbo mounting issues! Help! (attn:Stealthmode!)

i finally got my turbo in the mail and tried to bolt it to my manifold, but the bolts aren't long enough! On my manifold, there are 4 bolts that are welded to the manifold itself. when i put my turbo on, without gasket or lockwashers, only 2 threads are left! once i put on the gasket and washers, none will be showing at all :-[....anybody know how i can extend the bolts or something? the only thing i can think of is to shave down the exhaust housing to fit the nut and wahser, but i'm a putz with that kinda stuff and figured it wouldnt be a good idea.

oh and stealth, check your pm's!

Sorry bout shitty pics, Can't find my digi.

that flange on your turbo looks thick as hell. take a grinder to the area around there the nuts are (not on the side where it bolts to the manifold) and make some room, imo

or you could take it to the machine shop and have them shave it off just like a head.Make sure it comes out even so you wont have any sealing problems.

maybe get longer bolts from a bolt/nut shop? then drill out/grind the old bolts that are welded in and replace with your new bolts? seems to me that would be the easiest thing to do.

that sounds easy?...id say just grinding room into the housing for the nuts would be the easiest, and take like 15 minutes

I agree with ghetto

yeah, the size of the flange on my old garrett t3/t4 was about half that size....so you guys dont think grinding it down about 1/2 to 3/4 inches will ---- with the durability of the seal? coz man, the thing is like 2 standard flanges stacked together!

Why the ---- is it so thick? :o

why would you grind it down 3/4 inch?...is it even that thick? im talking about grinding the other side, not where it mounts up to the manifold, just around the bolt holes

this is what you should do man.

just grind out a little crater for each of the bolts,
so you can fit the nut on.

you do this on the turbo exhaust housing,
on the side where the end of the bolts protrude, and the nuts connect.

this way you wont have to worry AT ALL about sealing issues from grinding, and your nuts/bolts will hook up right

problem solved :)

hmmm...not like i said that already :P...but i guess you worded it better ;)

LOL. I did respond to my pm's, it just takes me a few days sometimes. Sorry about that.
I was thinking about decking the flange on the mounting side. As long as you deck it flat you shouldn't have any sealing probelms. GT's idea makes sense as well. ;)

Re:Turbo mounting issues! Help! (attn:Stealthmode!)

yeah i'm definitely going to have to grind it down. finally measured the turbo housing today, 1" thick :o...i think i can afford to grind a flat spot about 1/4 inch...

what kind of T3 manifold is that?

Re:Turbo mounting issues! Help! (attn:Stealthmode!)

I don't understand why no one has said the obvious. You know any hardware store has nuts and bolts in a variety of pitch, diameter, and length. Even Pep Boys has hardware. Just get longer bolts.

You can also tap the holes in the turbo flange and just use bolts, if you don't want to use nuts.

i dont understand why some one hans't READ the obvious, but if they did, they would know that the bolts are welded ito the flange as studs.. :o

::)wow... look at that ::)

Re:Turbo mounting issues! Help! (attn:Stealthmode!)

oops sorry i misunderstood :-\, ok in that case you're screwed. i'm assuming you got the manifold and the turbo from different places since no one ever bothered to check if they would work together. i would try to drill out those bolts that are welded in there, but it's going to be very tough depending on the hardness of those bolts. You could bringing the turbo to a machinist to mill down the face that mates with the manifold. 1/2" is good enough.
