turbo leaking oil?

turbo leaking oil?
its driping slowly
i see it on crossmember when i am back from driving
i put it under a lift and i see a dip on the oil return Bolt...and on one of the compressor bolts.....
wtf?freshly rebuilt turbo!!!!!!!!!from blaastproformance

imma try tighting the oil return bolt alittle more and then clean it up and see if it still leaks!

ahah! Leaky turbo? unfortunately, very common problem.
Make sure you're not giving it too much oil. a 1/16 restrictor on the feed line is good.
Oil return: I like to have a full ½" I.D. return line. You need a 5/8 hose for that.
That hose needs to go straight down with no kinks or sharp angle and tapped on top of oil pan, above oil level.
make sure you use a oil with good viscosity when hot such as 5-50... 10-30 leaks out more easily.
you can also double check engine compression. Example: 180-180-120-180 psi makes an engine that runs "OK" but will prevent a proper oil return and make the turbo overflow.
If it still leaks, I have some stagger gap piston rings here that are a good upgrade for sturdy leakers.
Yes, a picture of your install would be very helpfull. Not that we don't trust your know how but I have seen some installs ranging from weird to really worrying! (and of course I'm always blamed for the problems but that's ok. I guess it's part of my job....)

my daily driver is moded too so i cant go barrow one(stupid Fast and furious)

i dont know...wouldnt make sense for a newly rebuilt turbo
oil return is no more than 1 inch lower than the flange that bolts to the block
-10 fitings
-12 line
no leaks from the line!
it seems like its from somewhere near the return flange or the backing plate
i have a resitrictor on it too(atpturbo...
btw im using 10w40 castrol gtx...
will 10-30 be better? i know honda says to use 1030 but i always used 1040 with no problems when na

I am SURE the oil is coming out at the turbine piston ring and it leaks out through the joint between the center section and the turbine. This problem has plaggued the turbo industry since day one. it's kind of a weakness in garrett's design that we have to work around. THey have fixed this weakness with the new GT turbos BTW.
10-30 oil is not so good on a custom turboed car. It gets very liquid and runny and no longer lubricates much at these new much higher temperatures than NA. That's why i recommend 5-50. Your 10-40 is ok too.
Yeah I have seen some cases where the stagger piston ring is needed. Sometimes it leaks because there is "some" wear on the turbine ring land and even a brand new piston ring no longer seals perfectly. In thoses case, the stagger gap ring may prevent having to purchase a new replacement shaft ($$$). It's also possible to machine that worn out ring land and use an oversize ring.
