Turbo Heat Shield

I can't remember if I got it here. There was a nice DIY to making a turbo heatshield out of a regular cooking pot... anyone seen this floating around or have it ?

Man I feel stoopid now, I actually paid good money for stainless sheet... :S I'm deff going to do this, then stuff my ceramic fluff under it. I was originally going to use SS wire + mesh to keep the ceramic on it, this is way better. I also have a great idea for exhaust heatsheilds, used SS cups!

BTW I just had a funny thought... 40 $0.50 ebay stainless cups + welder = $20 4" SS exhaust :1

Cool, but true purpose? ::) Where's it mounted? The turbo DP is a V-Band flange so not bolted into the DP.

Spool your turbo with a blowtorch then?

Re: Turbo Heat Shield

ya i know that keeping heat in the manifold helps and thought you wanted to keep the turbo cooler so it wont heat the intake charge too much

ichbinsobose 07-03-2007 08:31 AM

Re: Turbo Heat Shield

hot exhaust gases contain more energy then cold ones

intake charge is heated through compression

And you think this rinky-dink heatshield makes -----all difference in spool time? You show me some proof, then I'll believe you.

Re: Turbo Heat Shield

Even if it doesn't reduce spool time, I will probably do one just to lower the engine bay temp.

Usually the exhaust housings crack from being cooled too quickly.

This is why turbo timers or letting your engine idle for a bit after driving are good things.
