Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Been stealing info from this site for a while so I figured I'd post up my daily beater project that I built with parts from 6 different cars :) :
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...22_25_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...22_27_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...22_18_full.jpg Bought it out of a field for $100, plug wires and a battery got it running but the headgasket was blown. Ended up swapping a 2.0L engine out of a '97 I got for $275 and a 5spd trans and associated parts. Turbo and manifold are 2g Eclipse, flipped with redrilled top manifold holes and a home-fabbed bracket for the lower holes ala jeffescortlx. Currently running 6psi w/no intercooler, AFR looks good (~11:1 according to the wideband), needing an IC and timing control to run more. Fun car for what it is, have <$2k in it and it still gets 35mpg if I keep my foot out of it. Specs: Engine/turbo setup: -2.0L SPI from a '97 -SPI Controller running off of the tach -1.9 MAF, 2.0 19lb injectors -2g Eclipse Turbo manifold (upside down) and T25 Turbo -Toyota Supra intake piping/blow-off valve -2.5" custom downpipe (fabbed by me) -Hacked $40 3" Civic exhaust -Vortech 10:1 FMU for fuel management -1 step colder Autolites -LC-1 wideband for tuning Suspension/Drivetrain: -5 spd trans swap out of a '94 Escort -Spec stage II clutch -solid front trans mount -MX-3 H&R springs and Tokico S/R struts -14" Miata Daisy wheels -B&M short shifter Future plans: -MKIII Supra Intercooler (since mine's never gonna run again...) -MSD Timing Twister More pics on my cardomain site: www.cardomain.com/id/doksurf33 |
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Awesome looks good.
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Good ----, I like both vehicles. Escort is some solid work, you should atleast throw a small smic on there though.
You should sell me parts from that 89 supra, namely the head and manifolds/turbo :) |
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Thanks. If I ever get the new engine in I'll have a head for ya :) No extra manifold/turbo, unless I find a good deal on a SP63GT >:D

Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
now thats a real sleeper 8)
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
lookin good man. Good stuff :6
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Word, that's awesome. Wagons make the best sleepers.
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
very unnassuming, i love it. Its fun as hell to rape people with a sleeper, especially a wagon
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
It's a blast, it was especially fun when I hadn't finished my exhaust and was running an open DP, got alot of WTF looks :D
Definitely need the IC and timing control, I got roasted by a Nissan Titan yesterday.... |
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Another one.... Are the motors stout or something ???

Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Ford had Mazda as it's sibling. Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth was Mitsu.
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
lol i know all about it, i was running open dp for a while and all the locals thought i was a ricer, but when i blow the tires away from a 40mph roll that pretty much ended that way of thinking
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
The Escort GTs have the Mazda motor, I'm running the 2.0L Ford SOHC. Motors are pretty stout, I've seen a few running reliably at 200+hp, which is pretty good considering they're about 90hp stock ;) Main thing is the cheap factor, I think jeffescortlx has around $300 into his turbo setup and he put down 140whp/188wtq...

Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
fmu+wideband= ??
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Ha yea, bought the wideband for my Supra and figured I'd put it to use. FMU works really well with the Ford EEC, after a couple of days of learning it works pretty seamlessly. Plus it was $80 and I'm too cheap to spend more on my beater car ;)

Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
whats with all the escorts?
nice!!! but man they have been popping up like a mother fucker. i like your build but i think someone linked us to a turbo escort site or something. lol on another note hows the spool time for ya? |
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog

Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Right now spool time sux (don't have full boost until 4k or so) because I had to lengthen the wastegate actuator to drop the boost. It was like a switch with just a spring on the flapper, but the boost spikes were killing me so I went back to the WG. I might try and cut it open and put a softer spring in, seemed to work well for Jeff.
The Supra is slowly coming together, I bought it 2 years ago with a spun rod bearing and have slowly been building a motor. My wife's in grad school in another city so having 2 households kills our fun budget... |
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Damn its about time we get some noobs that have some thing to show instead of just asking damn noob questions. Soild work on the escort :y.

Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
have you treid the 2.3L turbo maf or the v6supercoupe maf?
might flow more air then that tiny 1.9 maf |
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Nice work, its projects like this that initially brought me to HMT> Keep up the good ----. :)

Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Put a 1/2 tank of E85 in today and I'm very stoked. As expected, my AFRs went from around 9.8:1 at WOT to ~10.5:1 due to the oxygen content of E85. I was able to crank the boost to 8psi (AFR around 11.5:1) without any deto, may go higher but I'm not sure if I've got enough fuel. Huuuugggee difference going from 6psi to 8, spool is much quicker now that I don't have a gap between the wg flapper and outlet :y
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Sweet ride, like the wheels on it. Does you maf run that bastard 2.5-7volt setup also?
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Nope, 0-5v.
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Ahhh, he has it good I would kill for that. My option is spending $220 for mine to get cookiecut :7 Think I may go to a cheap stand aloan. But I have thought about a EGT or miata build ;D

Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
I want a turbo Z3.

Quick update with a question-I am now running 100% E85 and 9psi of boost. Traction is pretty much non-existent until 3rd :S I'm a little concerned that I may need more fuel, my AFR is around 13.2:1 at WOT in 4th. No deto (thanks 105 octane ;D) but that doesn't leave me much of a safety margin. I have a 12:1 FMU disc (running 10:1 right now) and was thinking about swapping it in. Any thoughts? |
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
Long overdue for an update, been boostin' for ~8mo and 12,000mi with no problems, the last 5k or so at 12psi on E85 8) Haven't made it back to the track since I ran a 16.0 with 6psi of boost and 10:1 afrs but hopefully soon. Should be alot quicker with twice the boost and AFRs in the happy range. Also got my FlexFuel setup dialed in, runs great on gas and E85 :) BTW, FMU is still working great, can't beat it for $80...
Haven't done much else, focus has shifted to the Supra (motor, tubular manifold, E85 conversion, T61, etc.). I did clean up the interior and exterior but it's still a beater. Painted Miata wheels with new Falken's: http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/1965/p9260026yr6.jpg Cheezy overview vid (Nascar headliner FTW): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5u6gUvuImFM Short pull (need to make a camera mount): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_SlKthNpV8 Old vid of 16sec run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmG6xHs8Swo I'll try to get some new videos at 12psi, def need the camera mount as it takes both arms to keep 'er under control :6 No real future plans, might add an intercooler in the spring and work on cooling as it gets a little toasty with the a/c on in traffic in TX heat... |
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
wagons are the most gangster cars you can buy...Nice project!
|
Re: Turbo Escort Wagon-junkyard dog
I dont understand how your tunning this though...just by adjusting the fmu? Where does the flex fuel capalility come in?
