tial wastegate open at startup? sounds like an exhaust leak..help.

hey guys, installed a 38mm .8bar gate on my D16A6 turbo car.

when i start the car up, i have exhaust gas coming out of the wastegate dump right away, is this supposed to happen?

I was under the impression that the wastegate is only going expell exhaust gas when the turbo is spooling and making power and not on startup?

the vac source for the wastegate is coming off the turbo compressor, there is a port on the side of the turbo. Could the mild pressure the turbo is building on startup be cause for the wastegate to be opening prematurely, if im taking the vac source right from the turbo?

The turbo itself is a SVO turbo.

I was thinking about running the wastegate off the PCV line to see what it does?

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Jas

u need to hook ur vac line to the side of the wg. did u put the sealer ring in the botom of the wg befor u instaled it?

i do have the vac line hooked up to the side of the wg. it comes up from the side of the turbo, up to the side of the wg.

I did no use the sealer ring as the flange i have does not have a recessed groove in it for it to seat into. If i put the sealer ring in and use a gasket, the flange of the wg, will not seat on the manifold flange and will cause a leak.

It should seat as you tighten it down. I have a 35mm and i put my seal ring upside down thinking it went that way because it fit the flange very well. But i noticed it before the final install and flipped it over. It looked like i could not get a gasket it their but when you tighten it down the ring will compress the wg to flush mount.

I do have a qustion for other guys, did you use the regular gasket or one with the fire ring? I have both but im not sure which will work best on this side of the wg.

Yes, the ring will seat flush with the wastegate and won't interfere with the mating surface.

I wouldn't run a gasket. They will just blow out anyways.

No i was talking about a alernative gasket i bought because the tial gasket sucked. I guess i will try it w/o one and see how it goes.

you dont need the gasket, i dont use it and it seals great, that little metal ring that goes on the inside of the wastegate needs to bet there or else it wont work right, do you have that?

lol, i did the same thing and thought it was normal, for 5 mos. :P boy, what a difference with spool time, sound, and overall boost :-\

Glad you got it working. As for gaskets...I went through two before saying screw it. I have no gasket in there and it did leak a tad for about a week but the carbon from the exhaust filled the tiny little seapage. Its nice and sealed now with no gasket at all :)

Im glad i saw my mistake because this is my first boost project so it would have taken me a little while to figure out. Glad it worked and it was something simple.

my wg got in the day i was suppose to go to the track for the first time, so i threw it on in 2 minutes and bolted to the track. it was my first set up so i didn't know it wasn't right, i thought it sounded funny b/c i didn't have a dump tube ::) for 5 mos. i drove it half ass boosted with an exhaust leak from the wg. i didn't figure it out until i installed my boost controller and the boost wouldn't raise, so i took the wg off to examine it, and sure enough no metal ring, good thing i knew where it was at ;D
