Default Supercharged Moped... the carb doesn't like the boost.

Hey, This is a bit off the general topic here but someone might be able to help or at least point me to someone who could. Basically I have mounted a smog pump off an old truck on my moped. I am really surprised by how much air it moves. Anyways when I have it hooked up to the carb inlet it revs up really fast at the same time spitting out a bunch of gas from all of the different fittings on the carb and then it dies, if I pull the tubing off as its reving back down it will continue to idle but if I leave it on it will just die. Basically it will work proporley for a split second and then crap out... Any Suggestions? any turbo carb gurus hear or anyone know any? I want to get this thing up and running Maybe it'll do wheelies

If I get it working I could take some pics and Abaz could add it to the turbo projects section...

first thing I would do is mod the emulsion tubes. another thing you might try is running it draw thru. for the emulsion tubes, just by a jet drill (pencil drill) and slowly enlarge the holes. I had the same problem turbo charging a vw powered sandrail that used a single solex carb. also try sealing up the carb the best you can, cause u can cause extreme rich and lean problems.

cool thanks for the reply, Sorry but what are the emulsion tubes?? Are they the jets? Draw though won't work because there isn't a conventional inlet tube on the smog pump.hmmm..

if you took your carb completly apart you should see a tube with holes drilled crossways thru it. enlarge the cross holes. (brain fart ) what type of carb is it? if its a slide carb forget about the emulsion tubes. if its a slide carb you might try buyin a main jet and just keep drilling it larger, it will run rich at an idle but scream like a bashee on the top. I hope this helps.

I dont think the smog pump is going to work. I have known guys that tried this on small displacement motors before(gocarts, minibikes)and it wont keep up, like you said it works ok at first and then craps out. Basically the smog pump puts out a set amount of air at a low RPM and it never goes any higher with more RPMs, unlike turbos and superchargers that increase output with RPM . Good idea, I like the way you think, but I dont think it will work.

We'll see but I don't think the smog pump's air flow is a problem at all, I've done alot of testing and the amount of air is flows is definitely based on the rpms, it doesn't jsut stop makeing more air at high rpms. I High rpms on hte moped it has enough power to make the radiator tubes bulge.. I think the problem is the carb get flooded as soon as it see the boost. Could the Float have something to do with this? I've going to take it apart to night and mess around with it.

talking to a friend here at work, he suggested setting the carb before the smog pump, since some carbs need vaccum in order to run right, and to get proper air/fuel mixture. just a thought. HTH.

oh, and that might be why your dumping fuel everywhere, if it's made to run under vac, and your running boost, your pushing fuel where it wasn't meant to go.

he already said that wont work. if you seal the carb better and increase fuel it will work pressurized

Many times to get blow through setup to work without blowing the seals in the carb you have to "box" the carb. Basically you make an air tight box that goes completely around the carb, you make an inlet on the box that you can connect the turbo/super/smog pump to. That should solve the problem.

what about the fuel though. wont that still be under boost rather than vac ? how would you make the fuel enter the cycle ?
