stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
So I know a lot of you will probably tell me to read all these FAQs and ----, but I didn't see anything like this in there. This is a really stupid question, so bear with me. I have a 2000 Ford Focus with the regular Zetec 2.0L engine. The stock exhaust manifold bolted to the catalytic converter with a kind of triangular shaped flange. Is there a way I can still use this manifold or will I have to get something else that will work?
|
Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
an exhaust shop can make the flange and then you can keep your stock restrictive piping ;)
|
Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
Cool, any idea how much that will cost?
|
Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
I dont think anyone on here has turbo'd a focus, I could be wrong though. I have seen a few on the net so do some searching, so what they used. Then do a write up so the next guy that wants to turbo his moms/girlfriends car will have a strarting point ;)

What the ---- is wrong with you people here?

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
The only thinkg I can think of about using the stock manifold is that the turbo will hang fairly low. This will require the use of a sump tank and some type of pump to route the oil away from the bearings and back to the pan. I'm not sure how much this costs, but it is something you will want to look at.

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
buk9tp - Yes, as a matter of fact I did because that's clearly what I wrote.
I was referring to the way that most people on here don't even help with other's questions, but instead find some way to belittle them, which obviously isn't very helpful at all. This is why I'm always reluctant to post here because I don't need this bullshit. jeffsciv23 - Thanks for the help, and yes, it will be restrictive, but it will be free. RJwaggs - Okay, I'll try to look into that. I'm just trying to do this while spending as little as possible. |

Just thought I would clarify. After the oil passage/journals inside the bearings, the oil has no pressure to push it out. So the oil has to be pulled out byh some force. On many turbos, gravity is this force, but in your case, gravity will not ba able to pull the oil back to the pan if the lines are anything like I think they will be with that manifold. This is why you need a pump and sump :) |

You use the term "Men" in your last post. I see that term should be used very loosly on this forum.

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
Chode you may want to look into that most Focus turbos use a scavenging pump to return oil. Don't be so sensitive you homo.

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
there is a shop around here that bent a 3" exhaust from the cat-back for a friend of mine for $50.

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
this from a guy proudly desplaying his sweet ass rides in his sig. I now see why your defending mr.focus. You boys enjoy your moms hand-me-down scootabouts, do you guys take the spare tampons out of the glove box or just rock those too? :P

pimptastic, curious to see how the tt setup works. |
Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
highroller54 - Actually, you told me to do a search. I told you in the first post that I had searched. I don't consider that "helping." I'm not being sensitive either, I'm just pissed at the fact that I wasn't getting help of any kind, except from a select few. If you're not going to help or give some kind of constructive criticism, then just don't post. It's simple. I'm also sorry I don't have such a nice car as you do. I just can't get over how much better you are than me given this is my first car, and it was basically all that was available at the time that was reliable.

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
I didn't mean search here, theres ---- all at hmt for you that I can remember. I have seen a few turbo focus's on the world wide web though.

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
All those other ones would be great, but I just don't have the money. I might be taking a welding class this summer at the college, but until then I'm prety much stuck. Thanks for the help though.
highroller54 - Way to prove your ignorance. That's not the stock manifold. |
Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
I have a feeling I'll need to buy a different manifold.....

That's not the stock manifold. second off. you can just buy a cheap ass circular saw.. and some bends from racing soulutions.. cut the bends make your own mani.. ------- tape it up and mark everything.. and theres like 50 different people on this site that can weld it up for you for CHEAP... |
Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
He does have a point.... Look into pumps, look into clearances, look innto all the ---- you need to do to plan and all the possibilities. You may find out you can't run it with the stock mani afterall due to clearance down there. This can be a cheap project using new/built parts, you just have to search, research and plan, and not try to make it all happen perfectly at once.

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
Hey eshaw go buy How to Tune and Modify Engine Management Systems By Jeff Hartman, it's put out by Motorbooks Workshop and can be had at barnes and noble for like 25. They did an awesome write up on anything you need to know about boosting a focus, and they offer a lot of knowledge about tuning and high performance. I def recommend it, especially if you're new to the game.

http://members.teamtreo.com/bowdown/...pter%20004.jpg WOW!!! I'd honestly ditch that adapter you've got there and make a plate. That adapter looks to be about 3-4" long. That might help, unless you compressor is going to hit the runners. |
Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
Haha, that's not mine. I haven't even started yet, I'm just planning as of now. I'll definately try to get that book.

Now a question for the knowledgeable ones... If he had to keep stock mani couldn't you just make a pipe off of the stock mani and route it back up and have the turbo mounted up top like the pic posted by buk from turbokits.com? It might not flow the best, but hey this is HMT. |

And I only have a 70amp flux core unit. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member.../252407_45.jpg |
Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
I know, I ------- love your mani. :) I just finished all of my cold side ic piping yesterday using whitey bends. It's not perfect, but It's airtight and fits great so I can't complain.

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
A custom flange, two 90* 1.5" schedule 40 mild steel elbows, one tee fitting, about 3" of 2" square pipe, a 4" grinder with cutoff wheels, a dremmel, and a flux-core welder.
Not to bad for a starter kit. LOL |

Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
Aha! Someone just told me that an IHI from an old Probe GT (I believe) will bolt right up to my stock manifold. Does anybody know if this is true? Otherwise, I'm going for a T3 with a custom made manifold.

Not as low as your mom's dirty pillows. |
Re: stupid n00b question ill get hurt for asking
import an Escort RS turbo manifold from the UK, bolt it on the Zetec, and call it good. It comes ready to use any T3.
EDIT: They are all over on Ebay, Type in "Escort RS turbo manifold". also try www.ebay.co.uk http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-ESCORT-RS...QQcmdZViewItem |
