some serious turbo problems
ok, so my car was running fine and i put it away for awhile cuase i was waiting on a new radiator. Today i decided to patch my old one cuase they are on back order, and put on my new 3 thermal exahust.
When i take it out for a test drive, the moment i hit boost there are some very bad sounds coming from my exahust. It sounds like its starts to spool and just hits a spool limiter or somthing. I really have not clue maybe compressor surge???? My setup: t3/t4 .48/.57 hondata (basemap) shitty dumptube 440 rc 255 fuel pump 35mm tial xs boost controller. 5 psi all on my b18 |

"very bad sounds coming from my exahust"
The only thing I can think of that you are hearing is the wastegate opening, it sounds like complete ---- when external gates open. What do you mean rev limiter? does it stop going at a certain RPM? |
Re:some serious turbo problems
it sounds like the turbo hits a spool limiter or somthing. The first time i hit boost it went up to about 5 psi and made the sound. Then it wouldn't hit boost again.

Re:some serious turbo problems
and i know its not the wastegate, becuase i tried it with my dumptube on and off. It sounds like the somthing with the turbo. I have no clue, kinda like bearrings or somthing.

Re:some serious turbo problems
check oil feed/drain lines for blockage/flow.
maybe you'll be getting a new turbo with that radiator/ |
Re:some serious turbo problems
sounds like a boost leak to me. i have a charge pipe that keeps poping off,and when it does, its like one time u will have boost and the next time u go to get on it,the turbo wont spool, the car wont hardly rev,and the turbo sometimes squeels/whistles really loud. its like ur giving it gas for no reason,it just wont go any faster.

Re:some serious turbo problems
my car did this when i had a FMU, i think it was running too rich, but when i had hondata it never did that on basemap, i took it up to 10psi on basemap

Re:some serious turbo problems
do u have a filter on ur turbo? could u have sucked something into it?

Re:some serious turbo problems
wow, thanks for all the help guys. I really really really hope i don't need a new turbo, i have dumped soo much money into this thing already. I am gonna go tonight and check the oil, there could be a problem with the drain as warrick said. i am aalso gonna check my ic pipes and we will go from there,
Thanks |
Re:some serious turbo problems
i'm thinking a charge pipe came loose also.
|
Re:some serious turbo problems
i wish i could describe it better. It just sounds like my turbo is straining. Like a charge pipe is clogged or somthing, but it is coming out of my exhaust so i guess it would be coming from the compressor side. Last night i got the oil to the correct level Checked all charge pipes and intercooler for obstructions and secured them all back on. I took the car in a near by parking lot to try and get it to boost i hit boost and no sounds either. So i went back to put on my front end and took it out and there was no boost and that damn sound came back.
There is no shaft play either. tomorrow i will take off the exahust and go from there. |
Re:some serious turbo problems
Had a similar problem a few weeks ago, the only diff was that I knew it was an oil problem. Long story, but no oil was going to the turbo and after a awhile the thingstops spooling. Ran out an fixed the oil problem but the turbo was FUBAR, so i had to get another one. Greddy TD04h-15G, costs me alot of money for that POS.
is there a rattling sound that comes and goes, especially when you hit the gas? Stay off the car while you get it fixed, my setup had an internal wastegate that you could easily set to open the wastegate all the time and not spool the turbo. If you can open your wastegate, then you should do so, and if you can open the wategate don;t forget to unplug the intake form the turbo. Right now my burnt turbo is still on the car (waste gate is open though), I have fresh turbo in hand and will install it tommorow. Without boost my car feels like a POS, no passing power and I avoid eye contact with cavalier drivers because I do not have enough. |
