Single Turbo Lexus GS400

Re: Single Turbo Lexus GS400
I have been doing alot of research on the 1UZ-FE. I want to start a rwd project car. I was looking at a T-boned ls400, for $1000, but I slept on it, and somebody else bought it. I'd like to put it in a early celica or corolla.
I agree with everyone else, the turbos you mentioned will be too small for a single. Probably more of an exhaust restriction than anything.
I would think about a holset HX35 or HX40 turbo if you want to go single. Look at different ford 302 setups. Those engines push about the same amount of air as the 1UZ.
I think you are definitely going to have to lose the fan. Just get a slim fan that mounts in front of the rad.
Why do you want to keep the emissions stuff? Jettison the EGR, at least.
What are you going to do for fuel-management?
The lextreme FI forum is a good place to look for info.

Re: Single Turbo Lexus GS400
Random notes.
90-94 1uz-fe has the strongest parts in it.
vvt-i 1uz-fe's have weaker rods
3uz-fe has much weaker parts, far better heads.
You can hybrid with lots of work.
Considering the bone stock 4.0L 1uz-fe will drive & dyno more power than a stock 2jz-gte can - you're an idiot.
JBrady Ask where there are performance oriented Toyota v8 people.

Drop ClubLexus for performance talk. It's too conservative. Sure, there are pleanty of people willing to spend 10-15,000 for JDM turbo kits & the 1uz-fe twin supercharger kit, but you'll get nothing out of them when you ask how ---- works.
On the same hand, noone here is going to know **** about how to get around a 1uz-fe. HMT will be handy for you to read the guides regarding PCV & how things are piped & plumbed together.
Don't write HMT off tho. This place seves a very good purpose. HMT will show you that extremely inexpencive, things implimented correctly will work, regardless of what people say.
The moral being, ya you can turbo that for as little money as you want to spend.

but i wouldn't have done that to a gs400 =x that's what 2k dollar honda's are for. n yeah i wouldn't use no junkyard turbo on a lexas... not worth the time n its way to small

I want to put one in one of these:

Emission compliance is a good thing. EGR was NOT used on 1998+ Lexus V8s. As I am a moderator on Lextreme you can say I already know about the site. Good reference for those that do not. I also worked for Corky Bell at Cartech in Dallas in 1989 and 1990. I read parts of "Maximum Boost" while Corky was actually writing it. I am not new to compressor maps.
I think the setups to consider would be twins:
Just clear out/relocate whatever is behind the headlights, flip the stock ex manis around. T28s woud be a good choice. There are several different T28 models depending on which car they came on nissan s14, s15, etc. The IHI you mentioned it kindof a POS. You really want some tiny thing off an old ford probe on your nice new lexus?!? IHI makes some nice turbos, the newer ones off of WRXs and STIs, the VF models. DSM 16gs would be another option.
Or single setup like you pictured. It seems simple and clean.

Re: Single Turbo Lexus GS400
The STS rear mount setup doesn't seem ideal for performance. The exhaust gases have to travel thru 12feet or so of pipe before they get to the turbo/s.
4wdwagon saying "the pipe is too far to work well" is a dumb arguement.

Re: Single Turbo Lexus GS400
STS rear mount. The cat is before the turbo! There is no way the sts manifold retains heat and exhaust velocity as well as other designs. I'm sure it works, but not as well as it could.
I was under the impression that the best design for turbo manifolds, is equal length runners, ending with the collector imediately at the turbo/s. Ideally the runner would be as short as possible.
This is the highest power 1uzfe-turbo car, ever:
Turbonetics drag celica with 1uzfe heads, tundra 4.7 block.

Hmmm, I don't see the cat before the turbo on this car.
Tundra headers flipped backwards.
Stock 1uz headers.

62-1 (foams at mouth)....
A twin setup is gonna be a huge pain in the ***, lots of plumbing and may turn out to be to much work. I'd look into 1 large single. There are lots of cheap t4's on ebay, and even lots of large t3/t4 hybrids. However if you do decide to go with a twin setup, I wouldnt use a pair of IHI's or T25's.. I'd go with a pair of t3's .42/.48's there are a ---- ton of them around and they are very easy to use.
I had a twin setup on a 4 cylinder using ihi's and it spooled very fast, I couldnt imagne what it would be like on a v8.
