im havin a hard time here im at a cross roads, everything i read the guy at turbo center (whos been rebuilding turbos and tuning turbo cars for 20 years) has said that an rhb5 is adequate for a 1.6L yeah its small but, it came stock on an engine that was 2.2L so it cant be too bad i am aware that it drops off at 7000rpms but i can deal with that...

adequate for a 1.6L? if you want your ---- to spool at 1400rpms and make 140whp?

im by no means the best persont o talk to about turbos and i bet that guy is good at what he does but look at projects and other people's cars here on HMT.

You're running the d16z6. PERFECT example of a setup, and one that is very popular, BBKA's/Pats setup. he is pushing 230whp on a stock d16z6. pretty sure he isn't running a rhb5 to mkae 230 to the wheels (he is actually run the 60/4

so you need to awnser the few little simple questions:
- What is this going to be used for(autox, 1/4mi racing, freeway racing, etc)?
- How much power do you want to make?
* What do you want to spool at?
* Do you want more low end power or top end power?
- How much money do you have to spend on it.

What brand of manifold do you plan to use on this seutp? hf, log, some other cast brand?

I personally would rather not see any boost until 3500-4000 anyways becuase after that i know it is going to kick ya right in the ***. Then again, i'm more of the type for freeway racing and ----.

You should seriously consider either like a 14b or a 60/48(i'd really suggest the 60/48 becuase of the "standard" t3 flange setup)

what did the engine it came on red line at? and just b/c it came on it did not mean it was necessarily adequate. it just made it turbocharged.

all of you are making good points, im not saying its not small and im not saying i wouldnt be better off with a t3 im just saying i think its fine for now to start out with then i can step up to a t3 (which is what i planned to do) im pretty handy so making adapter plates is not a problem right now i just want something that will give me a little more power and right now the rhb5 is what i have to work with..

do you already have the turbo? Id just get a t3 if you havent got a turbo yet. NOT the fact that you need a DYNO QUEEN turbo like everybody on HT and most of the people here. T3 will give you plenty of options that you dont have with say ihi or mitsu. You can upgrade later without changing the mani/adapter. Im using a small turbo right now and i have an larget turbo in my room that i will swap in one day. Besides, the rhb5 is a pain to rebuild, i know because i tried

rhb5 is small, but use the cold side from a 2.3 Ford T-bird (IHI only) and that will at least get you up over 200whp.

It gives me 262wtq, keep's me happy for now.

same here i'm ordering my adapter plate from WeirRacing for an IHI Subaru RHB5, everyone tells me to go T3 but i'm running a D15B7 with "toothpick" rods so i won't be revving past 6K and even N/A right now i rarely go past 4K, i already have a .42/.48 T3 but decided to use the IHI. One more thing the Subaru IHI has a bigger compressor wheel then the ISUZU IHI from the impulses that are turboed, the exhasut wheel and center is the same. Are you using a probe/mazda IHI? i would like to compare the probe to the Subaru IHI.

the rhb5 is a garbage *** turbo. you definitely need a small t3 at the least.

heres a couple of pics of the turbo i have rhb5 came off of a ford probe i dont have to worry about rebuilding it cause i dont plan to(i hope to have somthing different eventually), but my friend is doing the same setup on his car 91 hatch with a d16y8 and he got his turbo rebuilt for $250 his turbo was in pretty bad shape though, i think he should have just bought a t3...
