You'll never be able to balance the wheels and shafts properly and it'll probably wear out and die a lot quicker.

Scribe a line showing the relation of the compressor wheel with the shaft.

definitly will do.

Right now, your turbo is probably in good rebuildable shape.
you checked your local turbo rebuilder? how much? maybe it'S not that expensive.

DIY turbo rebuild is far from economic when you think about it: At worst, and it's the most common outcome, it will fail right away in a catastrophic fashion resulting in a much more costly rebuild or at best, it will work for a little while but then, you have no warranty. when it fails again, you're back to square one and you'll need to pay at least as much to start over.
The ebay "DIY turbo rebuild kit" is a hoax, a scam. There'S no such thing.
ebay peddlers are laughing while retailing 4$ chinese rebuild kits at 70$! They don'T tell they are useless oem size internals while oversized ones are most of the times required, they don't tell about the specialized tooling and craftmanship required to properly perform a turbo rebuild either.

Yes do as he says. I tryed it, I mark where both sides where so not to change the balance, but no luck. You will only wast a bit more to send it to him.

I recommend him, I sent my turbo out and got it back within 2 weeks. The longest part is that sometimes there may be a slight delay at the border, but trust me, it is well worth it. Top notch guy, top notch work. BTW, I had rebuilt the exact same turbo as yours. Mine needed a new backplate and other misc. parts, and It still only cost under $200 to get rebuilt.

my buddies seem to think all the parts on those t3s are balanced individually.........so its okay to swap turbines and comp wheels without getting it rebalanced.

not true eh?

True Garrett parts are balanced individually. You have a greater chance of getting a turbo that is near being balanced using Garrett parts but the odds that you will get it perfectly balanced are still slim.

If you try to rebuild the turbo yourself, mark the shaft and compressor wheel and retaining nut to get them lined up the same as they were during reassembly and it should stay fairly close to its original balance. Don't expect the bearings to last and check for slop frequently.

Oh yes, the chances to get it right are slim!
Only brand new, un-used wheels are balanced individually. And still, when you mount some brand new shaft and wheel together, the resulting assembly always need balancing!
because of that, wheels taken off a used turbo are no longer balanced individually because some material has been ground-off from them in order to balance their assembly with the other wheel and thrust collar and all that, under one single angle.
Marking the wheel and re-indexing it at the same position will at best put the assembly in the same unblance condition that caused the bearings to wear in the first place.

Bearings aren't the only thing that goes bad in turbos that warrant a rebuild. My new used turbo's bearings are fine. The compressor side oil seals are bad though.

Re: Rebuilding a Turbo & which rebuild kit???

If the oil seals wear out, it HAS to be bacause of excessive shaft movement, either lateral or axial.
so either your journal bearings and/or your thrust bearing are worn out
