question
i have to drive to my welder after i install my turbo to weld my d/p is it cool if i drove 15 miles open turbo.
edit tomorrow i'm puttin my turbo on but theres just like 2 questions i have which are pretty basic, i got a few quarts of 10w30 oil that i never used w/ my tranny swap, is that ok motor oil for turbo? i live in ct too so its gonna get cold. also, how much oil should i add after i drain the pan and everything, like how much total quarts cause i know it has to fill the turbo/return/and feed lines. . |
Re: open turbo
open as in no dp but everything else hooked up is fine...just be sure nothing that will melt is too close to the exhaust

Re: open turbo
I drove with no down pipe for probably a month. i assure you, there will be no problems. O0

Hard boosting on 10psi on that z6? That's loud isn't it. LOL. Gets higher and higher pitched as you go up in the gears. I drove 1 mile there, 1 mile back, and 1 mile back again. Only boosted like 4psi, but still. I think you run alot leaner so just don't crazy boost or boost at all really. My opinion based on others when I asked this before. ;) ;D JP |
Re: open turbo
why would loss of backpressure run u lean?
|
Re: open turbo
bleh i never have more than like two feet of exhaust...its only real loud when you first take off

It would = less resistance which would = more power = not on the same tuning. This is what I was told. Just as you gain whp from open DP from full exhaust. You don't run the same map do you? No. JP |
Re: open turbo
its not like the car is tuned anyway, i doubt there would be any huge differene anyway

You would know before I would. I wanted an exhaust cut-out to run open DP or just run open turbo for the track. I was told it wasn't too safe by my tuner and another tuner. :-\ That's my source of information. JP |
Re: open turbo
well when i took off my 2.5in no cat dp back exhaust to a stock muffler and ran open elbow off the turbo, it was slower than when i had the exhaust on...so i dunno...but for making it leaner - i still dont understand.
and no less back pressure doesnt mean more horsepower....u do need a certain amount of backpressure to operate |
Re: open turbo
im no expert...just going on the experience of myself and pretty much all my friends...open dp is fine, but tune your ---- regardless
|
Re: open turbo/ and final questions.
^^^Ha, yes do tune it. Less back pressure/resistance on TURBO cars is better. A little different than open headers on a N/A. I don't fully understand either man, just what I have been told.

Re: open turbo/ and final questions.
the turbo provides the engines back presure, you however WANT THE LEAST AMT. OF BACKPRESSURE POSSIBLE BACK TO THE TURBO. so in theory no exhaust is the best exhaust.
get a rope |

Re: open turbo/ and final questions.
up for my oil question.
|
Re: open turbo/ and final questions.
HOLY ---- exhaust bolts are killing me i'm about to saw through my exhaust.
|
Re: open turbo/ and final questions.
take pics while u do your ----, n as far as oil goes, i always used 10w 30 oil, you use probably about 4.5 quarts, jus do 4 quarts start the car let it idle for a while to get oil everywhere n through the lines then check it after that, if its low add a bit, if its fine then leave it.

I have lost many studs/bolts/nuts off the turbo mostly due to virbration. JP |
Re: progress report
i can't take pics cause i don't have a camera.
i wound up sawin off the exhaust after the cat w/ a hacksaw, i wasn't dealing w/ those bolts anymore. so far i drained oil and got some on the driveway. removed a/c - easy as hell. removed exhaust manifold/cat (y7) installed oil and boost gauges, real ghetto, the lights arn't hooked up and they are basically hanging out of my dash bolted manifold / turbo / wastegate all together then bolted that to the block - had to saw off part of the rad fan housing cause it was in the way of the compressor inlet. tomorrow i have to : -install fmu (you know you've all been there befor, ill have real management when i get more dough) -drill oil pan -tap the block for oil feed. i really don't know how the ---- i'm going to do this i'm really not looking forward to it. i was gonna do it first thing to day, then start my car to purge the line but i looked under the car and i can't see ----,. i can see/feel the oil filter but not the sensor. anyone know wtf it is on a y7 block? i feel something above the oil filter but theres a sensor plug on it. does the stock oil press sendor have a sensor attatched to it that you have to take off to unbolt it? i also fear that i'm gonna have a big exhaust leak at the head flange. the gasket is loose in some spots and with the bolts tight, i can still wiggle it on some areas. :(. my turbo also has shaft play, more then it should i think. i clocked it a few times and fuked it up even more, i wonder if it'll even boost. ahwell. -donny. |
Re: progress report
k i just pulled the oil filter off, i see the sensor up top but its pretty on there.
|
Re: progress report
man that turbo sounds iffy i would keep a close eye on it oh and wat psi are you going to run the fmu
