Turbo that big is also out of it's peak efficiency range at only 7psi on a B16. Talk to J. Davis about Holset turbos, he knows his ---- about 'em.

EDIT: Looky, a big thread on Holsets, with maps. I know you're running an HY35, and there's no map in the thread, at least for the pages I've seen so far, but my guess is 7psi is still gonna be a ways out of the efficiency rating.

From what I hear, you need to be in the 15psi range to be in the effeciency island on these turbo's.

So bumping up the boost would help with lag.

Ya its pretty loud when it spools, it had a silencer ring in it, but it was only held in with a snap ring. Sounds like a Mack truck. I love it. In car vid coming soon.

Ya I need a mbc so I can crank up the boost. But 15 psi, yikes, that might be a little high for stock pistons. I'll go 10psi and see what that makes. I'm still running the stock clutch

The HY35 only came on automatic '01 trucks. They're supposed to spool a tiny bit quicker than the HX35.

I don't understand why you would run a turbo that big on a stock block...you'll be pushing your motor to its limits trying to get in that turbo's efficiency range.

What does "15 psi" and stock pistons have to do with anything? Either you are controlling combustion temps in the chamber, or you aren't, and your engine lives or dies accordingly. Well, make up your mind about what you care to do, and leave "15 psi" and "stock pistons" out of the discussion.

I doubt you are making 200 whp at 7 psi. I doubt you are doing any better than Hoggy did at 7 psi with his HX35 on a B16 - 160-180 whp or so. Once you get to 1.5 pressure ratio you'll hit the GT-equivalent efficiency and air flow to charge temps will be more in line with what you're thinking of when you compare the HY35 to an SC61 - the Holset should be a little better than the SC61 in that range, just like the SC61 is a single digit psi monster on the GSR.

FYI, to go offtopic, if you run a split turbine setup like the HX35 and want a LOT faster spool, do like the tractor pull guys and block off one of the turbine ports. You can also get a modestly faster spool from pairing up your cylinders and feeding them seperately into the split turbine, like you're supposed to. Your hp-per-psi-which-has-nothing-to-do-with-anything numbers will dissappoint every last HT poster [color=Pink]EVAR, but you will have more cylinder scavenging and less thermal mass held trapped inside your engine than the other Honduh boys, and if you have to run "7 more psi" to make "the same power" the heat trapped in/detonation potential of your engine will be less hp for hp - but who really cares if I can make more power more safely with "more psi?"

Anyway, I digress. I am ASSUming that the HY35 can be fitted with a smaller turbine housing if the spool is killing you - B16 is peaky, but you gotta be able to drive it - Jaymez at Diesel Injection in Cincy can probably hook it up for you.

I think Brood on HT eclipses my knowledge by a good bit, and Mark Pikas is who you turn to for the larger chassis HX40-80 sized stuff. When you don't break down and call Jaymez at Diesel Injection Service like a good little bitch - I do.

I can tell you that the DSM forum you linked to - while it had good tech - was diluted by DSMtards talking out of their asses. HY35 is 9 cm^2 turbine housing, not 12, the 94-03 HX35W was 12 cm^2. HY35W was made in the 90's, btw. HY35 compressor is *not* HX35 compressor - there is a difference of 3-4 lbs of air peak, and the posted up charts on the first page reflect that.

I believe they stopped making the hx35 in 01. there are also a few generations of hy35's. hy35 is nothing more than a frame name for the turbo. ie. t3 is a frame of turbos. there are several different compressor wheels for hy35's for example the 04 and newer hy35 has a much larger compressor wheel than the older hy35. it flows about 65lb/min as apposed to the earlier one that only flowed 52lb/min of air. the 7755 compressor wheel found in the hx35 was also available is some earlier hy35's so the compressors can be the same. the newer style hy35 has a foward facing discharge and has a solonoid on the compressor housing. some also came with a green wire sensor of some sort. the 7755 compressor wheel has a peak PR of 4.2 and Max flow of 52lb/min@60% efficency. the compressor map is very nice at 2 bar and 40lb/min its still within 74% efficency and the island is huge. thats where I plan on running mine. hoping for 400hp at 2bar(not a honda) if model x has a 7755 compressor wheel at 7psi and 20lb/min he's actually in the 74% island but very close to the bottom of the map. 1.4 PR is the bottom of the map. and one thing you have to consider with pressure ratio's(PR) is what elevation your at. a 2.0PR at sea level is about 15psi but at lets say 6000 feet(close to where I live) that same 2.0PR is only 11 or 12psi. so if model x is at a higer elevation he would be quite a bit higer in the map which would be pretty close to the sweet spot 76% island.

GT350, sounds about right, but they made the HX35 until 02 or 03. After that, the Cummins B5.9 got an HX40.

FYI, htturbo.com has a hot swappable HX40 compressor wheel + housing for $200, for when you absolutely need 700 to the wheel in a gas application...
